The Imposible to remove Windows Security Warning
submix8c replied to Willaraz's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
You mean THIS SITE??? How interesting! Now it's been logged here in two places! Even better, now you can search posts for your MemberName to find it again in case you forget! Keep a cool head, dude! Long-time members will gladly help until you get "itchy" and you may be ignored afterward... edit - isn't the "MSFN search facility" a wonderful thing? edit2 - OMG! That's the "Restricted Zones"!!! more on zone settings here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569 and... the better (safer) solution appears to be further down in the link... -
The Imposible to remove Windows Security Warning
submix8c replied to Willaraz's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
First, that was a rather rude reply to a respected member. Second, what IE are you using? Explorer an IExplorer are intertwined, you know... Edit - and last but not least, I believe the XP 64-bit is based upon Server 2003, so that may be part of the problem there. I found another (potential) setting - Mine is set to "Enable" - are yours set to "Prompt"?edit2 - BTW, that website link does exist - just accessed it in FireFox. And it is a reference to IE7. Better check ALL of your Security Settings... (note - I have NoScript installed as well - the link attempts a "redirect" which I did not allow temporarily. The Redirect takes you away from that page. ) -
Repeat - Try the way you were given. Otherwise you are wasting the time of those trying to help. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Why do you insist on doing the same thing over-and-over again? If it fails, then... YOUR way does NOT WORK! tomasz86 DID NOT instruct you to do that! edit - and the XP needs the SATA drivers installed!!!

Installing Windows 3.1/NT 3.51 on a Dell Optiplex PC
submix8c replied to windowskernel's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Fail right there...Does it still have the XP on it? If so, install a VirtualPC/VirtualMachine Software and install them there as Guests of the Host XP... -
No, you don't. Who told you that? Whoever did, they fibbed and/or misled you - It is "integrate-able"! Do NOT use nLite for first part, use HFSLIP first for "fixes" then nLite for Drivers after, i.e. Follow the instructions given.

The {hide} is fine by me - you can delete it entirely if you wish.. My intention was not to -monger, but to inform of the potential. The claim is that individual PC's are affected - some kind of "redirect", hence the "easy fix". Anyone caught with their pants down (as it were) deserves the headache. Maybe the dopey kid across the street will pay me again to "disinfect". I need the cash anyhow... "START /WAIT" (and wait and wait...) edit - looks like the USofA has a lot of pr0n-searchers! edit2 - OUCH!!! The first website ("us-of-a") to "check" seems to have problems loading (lots of hits?). Let the insanity begin! The "au" one (hint) loaded right up! On the bright side, I''m sure we'll all be up-and-running! (sheesh! it appears to be a REAL easy fix! Then again, you still need to disinfect your PC with some kind of AntiMalware/Antivirus)

Dude! Have you tried looking here (another MSFN member's website)? Also note that the prior link (tomasz86' website) I gave specifically states that it's a continuation of gurglemeyer's USP5! You're WAAAYYY behind the times! Either use the link I just gave or try any of the methods given by tomasz86. Start from there then come back with any problems (also try the Drivers -another MSFN member- you have). This is your best bet. edit - WOW! That (see next post) is really comprehensive, tomasz86 - links and all! Kudos! "Let no other Updates stand before me!" - So sayeth the MSFN Experts...

Seen on morning news and got curious. I did a search - virus internet monday and it popped up all over by different names. Apparently remnants of a hacker scheme the FBI caught up with last November may still affect some DNS Servers and many PC users are still affected. The affected PC's apparently get redirected to the rogue DNS addresses which ISP's were supposed to reroute to real IP's but the "temporary fix servers" will be turned off and affected PC's will no longer be able to access the internet. Not to worry, though. Affected PC's can be repaired. Check yourself now our be prepared to check the PC's later or (shudder) pay the Geek Squad to do it. Business Journal This website calls it Alureon. Above link provides this link to check and repair (if necessary) your PC. There's a very good chance that your AntiVirus/AntiMalware software already detects it. FBI website calls it DNSChanger as does Computerworld. This is Topic is more of an FYI heads-up to get a "checkup" by whatever means you have... See ya Monday morning...

Next question - are you referring to this in tomasz86' signature (link inside that link back to MSFN Topic for it)?

Install the Hyperion 4in1 - that's probably why the CD/DVD Drives aren't being found on the IDE Channel. Not sure about the following - VIA VT6420VT8237 SERIALATA V220e VIA_USB2_V2.70p1-L-M But would venture to say that the USB Drivers will be OK to install. MAYBE the SATA Drivers work (I THINK I seen something about SATA support on VIA chipsets for 98SE - don't quote me). Worth trying to install them - the 4in1 FIRST! After you get that going, look into the other "fixes" and start a new topic IF you need help on it/them (browse around first - go back to the instructions given by dencorso in the link I gave to your other topic).

BARF!!!A way to convert HLP to CHM - get it while you can (haven't tried it - have used the MS HTML Help Workshop - what fun!). Another way (includes links to Viewers)... HTML Help Workshop WinHelp Compiler - HCWSETUP.EXE (not a direct link - folder and filename given)

Update - VS2005 vs VS2008 a bug! Reference is to IExpress as opposed to 7Zip, but the problem appears to be the same. Just go to the last post in the link and follow the two other post.

? I can't understand either... You're not really clear. How can you "c:\>fdisk /mbr" if the Partition can't boot? Was this from the Floppy? You've obviously gotten through the MBR record because - The message is issued from the Partition Boot code. How did you create the Partition? It works like this - 1 - BIOS detects the HDD and sets the Parameters (LEAVE EVERYTHING FOR THE HDD ON AUTO!!!) 2 - MBR has Code to Find the Active Partition and Xfer Control to the Partition Boot Code 3 - Partition Boot Code then Xfers Control to IO.SYS in the Root of the HDD. Does the BIOS support the size of the HDD? You WILL be limited to a given Size based on the BIOS. In other words, have you REPLACED/ADDED that HDD and the BIOS is incorrectly reporting it (all settings for it = Auto / AutoDetect). If the BIOS is correctly reporting it AND it's recognized as the correct size - START OVER! You did something wrong OR you just popped it in from another PC OR you used some other utility to Partition It. The reason I say this is - HOW did you know the Flags that were set? FDISK doesn't do that... When you first run it, it asks - "Do you wish to enable large disk support (y/n)", after which you select "Y" and then you select - "Display Partition Info". IF it reads - "C: Partition 1 / Status A / Pri DOS / Volume Label (n/a) / MBytes (doesn't matter) / System FAT32 / Usage (n/a)" then that would be correct - UNLESS your HDD Partition is too big (greater that 120gb). There is a limit to the size unless you "patch" the FDISK/FORMAT/(and a couple of other files). 1 - Boot to the Floppy (an Emergency Boot Disk, I hope) DO NOT change drives! 2 - enter "FDISK /MBR" (while you're at it, double-check the values I indicated above) 3 - enter "SYS C:" and press enter 4 - Change to the Folder where the Install Files are and again run setup. If that doesn't work - Your EXACT message should be "Disk I/O Error replace the disk and press any key". If it isn't, the Partition has been FDISK'ed/Formatted with a non-Win98Se Boot Disk. and you should start over by DELETING the partition and follow the steps I gave you. Limit the Partition Size to 120gb, exit FDISK, Reboot, then "Format /S" ((the /S copies System Files, just like the SYS command does), then (however you did it) copy the WIN98 Folder and MSBATCH, then Boot to DOS and run SETUP again. If you get past that we'll talk about that "MSDOS.SYS" setting you will have for "Boot to Previous DOS" (or whatever...). edit - forgot to mention - DON'T have any other Bootable Devices attached. ... and this is where all of this began... and I'm suspecting you already have LINUX on the SATA drive? (the 80GB PATA is not too big for 98SE). Did you REALLY format the PATA/IDE with LINUX???? NONONO!!!

New to unattended windows creation
submix8c replied to O0o0O0O0o's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Me too... That's why I haven't gotten around to "fixing" the "latest" CMD file I posted. Thx for the time out to make it, -X-... You might want to post that over on the other Topic as well (or link to here to make an inter-link). I will gladly trade you two Grandkids for a vacation in the tropics... @O0o0O0O0o - There ya go!!!! Use it, it's good! (note - does NOT include "Microsoft Update" module - not needed for XP-only). -
Thx, alfreire, but the OP still wants to use an AutoIT - the method/changes nonetheless remains the same. I will assume that the "drive" variable will auto-insert into the WPI and still work? AFAIK, the Scripts will have to use that Variable, nonetheless (instead of the built-in variables). Take a look inside your JavaScript "list" and see what I mean...

OUCH!!!! I never noticed that!!! Good catch, LoneCrusader! (point #2) However, a correction (point #1) - Setup doesn't make the Partition bootable. I've run into this before... You must (should) FDISK to create a Primary/Active Partition (as I said), then Format it. If you use the "SYS" option of Format (prior to the copying of the Win98 Folder) it will add IO.SYS/MSDOS.SYS/COMMAND.COM to the Root of the Drive and after Install you will see that Win98 "thinks" you had a prior version of DOS on it (and think that you can "Boot to Previous Version). Check that in the MSDOS.SYS file (the Option will be there and shouldn't be). OEMSETUP is the one that both Partitions (and makes active) and Formats the drive then proceeds to run SETUP (from CD). This is undesirable for the method being used. I believe that there was a "DOSCOPY.INF" method that may have been used to do it but I've never tried it (kind of like a Robocopy pre-install). There's (AFAIK) no other way around it. You are correct that once SETUP is Initiated that neither the CD or a Floppy is needed after first Reboot. Either/or can be taken out as soon (immediately) as SETUP has been started. Correcting myself - FORMAT program is on the CD in the WIN98 Folder (unless it's a Win 95 "Companion CD" or any Upgrade CD).

New to unattended windows creation
submix8c replied to O0o0O0O0o's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
The one provided works fine - keep it in. If you want to "update" it just go here and do a little reading (the whole thread for the remainder of any "fixes" to get the latest and prevent any creation errors). After the "latest" is built, you will, however have to rebuild the Add-On CAB with the appropriate contents (look inside the UDC batch file for how it's done). That part I leave to you as -X- is not yet implementing it. -
Nonetheless, the remainder of the concept is the same.

An idiosyncrasy of using the Install from HDD and a common error (don't feel bad).First (by whatever means), a Partition needs created and made Bootable (as you undoubtedly did). Second, the Folder gets copied to the (any) Partition (as you did) Third, boot to a DOS prompt (by whatever means - minimum DOS-5 I believe) - notes - an EBD Floppy is fine (you used it). It expands the EBD.CAB to a RAMDISK. - Also, the Win98 CD has that selection in its Startup ("Boot CD", then "Start Computer"). - Notice that the EBD.CAB is not expanded to RAMDISK for CD Boot so the FORMAT program is unavailable. - If your CD is not bootable, Boot Floppy Images can be easily found and created (bootdiskDOTcom). - Bootable USB can only be used if you have DOS USB Drivers (a different subject - search MSFN). Fourth, "CD x:\Folder", then "x:" (where the Install is, "x" is the Drive and "Folder" is the Install foldername) - (as you did) Fifth, run Setup Win9x always installs on the Active (Bootable) Partition of (usually) the First Physical Drive. The Install Folder can be on any HDD/Partition. The beauty of it is you no longer need the CD when you Add/Remove Programs. Note also that the MSBATCH.INF could be put on a Floppy/(elsewhere) and pointed to during setup (e.g. "SETUP A:\MSBATCH.INF"). This keeps it from being on the HDD (for all to see). The MSBATCH.INF can be named anything as long as its pointed to by SETUP. Since this is Text-Mode, all Folders/Files involved must be 8.3 file/folder names. OEM's usually (used to) create the "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs" folder and place the Installation there and run Setup as you did, then Image the HDD and Clone it across the OEM Computers. Of course, OEM's also "tweaked" ("sysprep'ed") it to allow for the EULA and other items. I believe they use(d) a MiniSetup (minimal Win98 Boot) to allow for entering User Info, etc (similar to NT-style SysPrep). More on that here (a PDF). The tool can be found here (post#5). This is just an FYI (and fleshing the process out) in case others stumbles across this thread. (note - both problems have been discussed before)
-
It appears that several things are involved. First the "SETUPCOMPLETE.CMD" (and defined to run in your XML?) needs changed to find and set "WPIPATH", then change the affected JS to point to it, including any BAT/CMD that might have the variable passed to it, and possibly any of the BAT/CMD files to use instead that variable (WPIPATH). WPIdotNET is temporarily out of commission, but the Manual should be in your Package and both the "XP $OEM$" Compressed file and the "Vista/Win7 SETUPCOMPLETE" Compressed file are still available on the Wayback Archive (Oct 2007) as "samples".

WD5000AAKX-001CAO Caviar Blue
submix8c replied to michael chiklis's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
In English - no specifications, no instructions. Another forum thread on your HDD (same Firmware). A number of "search hits" on this HDD/Firmware having problems. I see no Firmware for your HDD on WD's website. Take the suggestions given (see link and jaclaz's comment) to back up whatever you can and RMA it. I'm not sure if using the jumpers would help or not (along with the Adapter in question). BTW, jaclaz is the resident expert on data recovery... HTH and good luck. -
Ahem... re - Link#1<snip>Huh???? (see below comments THAT SAYS LOOK BACK HERE!) (Sigh...) Confused by terminology? I said (to clarify... UNDERSTAND this, please...) -"Shared Folders" = Sharing via VPC2007's Settings "Shared Folders" (when Guest is running AND you Share a Drive/FOLDER, which in turn AUTOMAGICALLY assigns a Drive UNLESS you FORCE it to a free one) "Direct Sharing" = via the NIC and within BOTH Host and Guest AS NORMALLY SET UP IF ON PHYSICALLY DIFFERENT PC'S I ALSO said ...and I tried it BOTH WAYS (VPC2K7)! So, you really have no problem EXCEPT...You claim Now... WHERE? WHAT POSTS? On MSFN? Or some other forum/site/blog? Have you personally used Virtual PC (2004/2007) or just the NEWEST "Windows Virtual PC" (where "Shared Folders does NOT exist anyway, correct?)? So, the assertion isn't even VALID for Windows Virtual PC. Give me something (a link to the claim) that makes it believable, please. I/we would love to hear from you on that vague assertion so it can be proven/disproven. We take "I heard such-and-such" with a grain of salt here without something to back it up.(note - have found vague references on stackoverflow and vmware communites - naturally!) Three Modes of XP-Mode. Not that I can see.Yes, I did (reread the original posts). Now, you said (SEE FIRST QUOTES THIS POST - ABOVE) First post - Post#8 How odd that it now works! BTW, I only suggested "Shared Folders" because that's what you wanted.Searching for a USEFUL Guide on Windows Virtual PC... Here is Networking from TechNet (calls it "Bridge"). The Reference appears to be one-for-one with VPC2K7 (which doesn't indicate a Bridge). Notice that there is NO "Filter" installed for VPC2K7 (AFAIK) and there is INDEED a SEPARATE "MAC Bridge Miniport Driver" by which Multiple NIC's can be Bridged (unused by VPC). Another valid reference - Performance notation - WOOPEE!!! SHARED FOLDER!!! On a final note - If you don't have it sussed with all of the info/links I dug up (and I'm not even using it!), well...
-
It's not anywhere else? It SHOULD be also in "Program Files\Internet Explorer"! What else did you "delete"/remove?
-
Ahem... re - Link#1 - Now me (reversing Machines)... You already have Shares defined, just Map them. I 'kind of" said that, didn't I??? Yep... and that's from Link#1 - Sadly, this appears to be the "Direct Shared Folders" feature formerly in VPC2K7 but also somehow allows for the "integration" of what I had found of (supposedly) being able to install a Software in VPC and it is also "seen" in Win7 - you "Run" it on Win7 and it "Executes" in the XP-Mode Machine. What the effect would be of the "C-drive" I'm not sure. One would a$$-u-me that it would appear separately in "My Computer" (not sure how). How would it be that bad? What gave you that impression?Granted, it is slower (based on Router/NIC speed vs Shared Direct via VPC2K7 "Shared folders"). BUT... I see no noticable difference. 1 - Host uses Real NIC 1a - Router assigns IP-1 for MAC-1 2 - Set Guest to use the Real NIC 2a - Router assigns IP-2 for MAC-2 (the Interface) 3 - Data Transfer from-to is via the Real NIC 3a - IP-1 is the Real one, IP-2 is the Interface - look in your Router they should both be there 3b - The only slow-down is the speed of the NIC and Router (100mbs? <- mBits/s) Mine - Router - 192.168.8.18 newxp 00-03-FF-1B-E4-5A (in VM, it shows exactly the same) I am TOTALLY unsure if VPC2K7 runs on Win7 (probably does - 32-bit only) however the "XP-Mode VPC" is set up to be activated ONLY on Win7 "Windows VPC" (afaik) - I already check that out by setting up a VPC2K7 VM and used the VHD (required activation). I am believing that the Key is only good for Win7 "XP-Mode".
