  1. Heh, I was just about to suggest that. Disable the onboard audio + game Port + midi port as their will be IRQ fighting unfortuately unless you do. Once you do that you can run multiple sound cards without a problem through PCI. The gameports should work without problems on your soundcards as well. The onboard audio you have is probably manufactured by realtek. Persoanlly not a fan of them due to how poor it functions. I have an 8ch realtek built into my board but there is absolutely no built-in amplification and I cannot use it for legacy gaming either. I run passive speakers so... my yamaha is almost a requirement for sound. For gameport use for legacy gaming however, if that still doesn't work out there are other ways. If the legacy games do not notice a USB pad\stick then you can use a lil program called 'JOY-TO-KEY' which converts joystick inputs into keyboard inputs. I use it to use my ps2 controller to play games like doom and heretic right now. works like a dream. Also your sb live 5.1 should be recognized. Using the same card for mine right now for legacy gaming through a dos window. Try taking something like a pencil eraser and rubbing clean the contacts on your card. Usually does the trick for cards that aren't being detecteddue to dirty contacts. Have you tries using the modded drivers by NGO? The download may say 2k/XP only but it contains the INF's for 9x systems. Use the 'gaming' driver-set for the card and you'll be off without trouble. If you decide to use them both and the yamaha doesn't play midi\sound with dos game, disable the yamaha's legacy sound system and reboot. Then make sure the soundblaster is set to use IRQ5 .. if not then you'll have to physically swap places of both sound cards (after a shutdown of course) on the board then check again after boot. Once thats set you just have to select the sb live as both primary playback and primary midi (ms synth) to play sound\midi with legacy games.
  2. thats a great verrsion of winamp for older computers or if you just dont need/want all the extra stuff. besides, it does what winamp 5.1 does, plays mp3's right? Does everything 5.1 does but without the cd burning capabilities. Also does everything most other players can do while playing every format I've come across.
  3. Winamp 2.91 for audio Winamp 2.91 for video using VID4WA plugin (+full dvd support) Plays any audio\video as long as the codecs are installed. Reason for winamp 2.91? Does what I need with low resource usage and zero complaints.
  4. DirectX is neccessary for many forms of hardware\software to take advantage of functionality and\or even run at all. Hardware such as some video cards need direct x to take advantage of hardware acceleration or software rendering if they rely on directx to handle alot of internal features. Seems intel gfx chipsets rely on it alot for many things and will cause lockups otherwise. Some soundcard drivers also need directx if their drivers are written to use it and don't have a software fallback method if directx is too low a version of unavailable. Alot of games and other software that use sound and video may need directx installed to run. This based off my own experiences due to my laptop needing ddhelp.exe manually loaded because It will often load twice on bootup which causes additional lockups. If it's not loaded most things won't function either.
  5. Try going into your control panel -> multimedia -> click 'advanced properties' under playback. Change your speaker setup to the one you have. Might do the trick if you're running something other than 2-speakers. Also, make sure your volume is correct in windows and not (for some reason) on mute.
  6. The problem is due to you having an unclosed script tag... <script type="text/javascript" src="content/external.js" /> should be <script type="text/javascript" src="content/external.js"></script> You cannot use hard breaking at the end with script tags... need to close it normally. Because of the hard breaking - IE considered everything after it as part of the script. Normally when an external script is called - everything within (or in your case, after) a script tag is ignored. That is why you got nothing and no script error besides.
  7. Using Sprint (AKA: Embarq) for my DSL. 512k down / 128k up =( Very reliable service though - I'll give them that.
  8. I find it funny how J. Anthony cambice is incapable of backing up his statement in any form. ----- J. Anthony Cambece, B.A., M.B.A., J.D. Attorney/Owner • Admitted to Massachusetts Bar, 1996 • Over 11 years in collections industry ----- Collections Industry and owner - you're here to collect your darwin award, no? Stating that XP is anything close to ME is nothing but fiction. I would have expected more from someone with 11 years in the industry than a single one-liner. An attorney bases off fact and not fiction meaning you wouldn't be basing off 'hearing from the internet'. You would have also backed up your one liner with relevant facts\statements should you have actually been who you seem to be. .. you sir are a fraud and\or imposter. Where is my thumbs-down emote? EDITED: I also find it funny how this is your first post since your signup: cambece Group: Members Posts: 1 Joined: 19-December 05
  9. -------- php and javascript are the best when sripting sites etc. -------- I agree to that. Both of them in tandem make for powerful client-server scripting. Both are the similar in structure and functionality. Save one is serverside and the other is clientside. Had my hand (or two) in using the two together already. Been working on my chat using just javascript and php together. Php to handle backbone functions such as authentication, flatfile database management, and user data handling. Javascript to handle client functions, inputs, and update retrieval. ... Sadly - i'm not helping with keeping this topic on track very much. So.. back to polling
  10. Using USB2 drivers by orangeware for mine... unless orangeware doesn't supply usb2 drivers for his board? The site that shows his mainboard supplies drivers for his onboard audio for 'all windows versions'. Just click the drivers link for that board. http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/Prod...tailName=Driver -------------- Anyway, The problem might be limited to the fact that you need to limit your ram for the time being until you get everything setup up. Including installing the Unofficial service pack. You can do that in safe mode (since thats as far as you can get) by... Going to run -> type 'msconfig' -> press enter. Click the adavanced button. Put a checkmark in the 'limit memory to' entry and type in 256 for the limit. Then click ok twice and reboot. 512+mb of ram on a base install can give some abnormal results untill a few tweaks are made.
  11. The driver issue you can often find out whats wrong by checking the driver files installed. It should show a list of installed drivers for it. Click each one to ensure there is version info avail for it. If it says no info available or file not found, you'll need to copy that file to the windows\system directory. I typically have to use this fix for linksys wireless adaptors as it's often got na missing required file. Often ntkrn.vxd i believe that ends up in the wrong directory. Just doublecheck the locations for each file. The upgrade message can be circumvented by renaming the windows directory and\or deleting it all together. Just make sure youmove stuff such as your desktop folder and the like out of it or copy the files to the root. However, you can also try using the command switch /nr to skip the registry check on setup.
  12. AMD all the way due to lower core temps and a larger internal cache. I didn't vote as I dont have or use an 'XP' version. Using an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ [san-Diego] so... no 'XP' in it at all. edit: didn't realize this thread was as old as is said it was. I saw it near the top and automatically assumed it semi recent. Didn't even check the date of the first post. Sorry
  13. Yes being that an online MMORPG I play is based off the JAVA-Platform. Using the latest Microsoft JVM instead of SUN however. If you also mean JavaSCRIPT then definately yes as I actively use it in my web-based projects. Heavily used to cut down bandwidth use between server->client transfers, manipulate\send data, and recieve data using an emulated form of AJAX to collect data dynamically in the form of Javascript instead of XML.
  14. I don't smoke at all and have lost a family member to emphesyma. Also don't like being around smokers as cigarette smoke gets my asthma going. Before my mother had passed on - her favorite place to sit and smoke was right under the A\C intake vent. Which of course caused my room to end up half-full with a thick cloud of cigarette smoke billowing in through the vent. However - if I have to be around smokers I just deal with it. It's their choice and nothing I can do against it but duck my head under the smoke.
  15. Voted blackcomb - because if Im correct blackcomb never really existed. What could suck more than a version that never [really] existed to begin with?
  16. So far, the xp machines I manage in my fathers office have yet to be reinstalled over the past year. Despite that one of them seems to have problems pop up from nowhere sometimes despite being clean. I would reinstall it to freshen it up but he tends to lose his mind if even one thing is out of place. So I just leave it as-is.. Well, *MOST* things really rather than anything... http://mechresource.myvnc.com/upload/w98_explore_0da.png
  17. So your basically trying to recreate firefox's search method already? Also, did you also open firefoxes 'java console' (found in tools?) to see if any javascript errors had been reported back?
  18. Greatly appreciated RainyShadow. You are a savior ^^ I can finally ditch systray for good and knock off a few % of consumed resources :
  19. Myself - I've got my gripes about xp and I've got even my own about 98 once in a while (few and far between) but they don't belong here. However, whatever happens happens. We've had our run with suppprt and it's over. If they [microsoft] are somehow encouraged to extend support further then kudos to them. However, it doesn't matter how long ago supoprt has ended or when doomsday begins. There is still a wonderful user base that supports it and that is all that matters. Think of windows98 as the new linux in a way. It may not be open source but it still has very heavy backing by much of it's user community and will be developed and expanded as such. Fanatical? Maybe a lil Zealot? Absolutely not Crazy? Perhaps but they never admitted me yet I will use 98se because I don't see the real point in upgrading. I've always been a minimalist whereas if I have something that handles all of my needs without having to dual-boot I'm all for it. If I can get that option in as small of a size and memory footprint as possible, even better. I just truely don't believe in newer always being better when the newer and better just doesn't handle what I need and want. Convinience and performance is key in my eyes. Can I play all of my legacy games at a whim? YES Can I play all of my legacy games without emulation (and on kali)? YES Can I still use older versions of software that still do the same job as the newer? YES Can I still play even the most recent of games and software? YES Can I network over a lan and wireless flawlessly? YES Can I host it as a full time personal webserver\fileserver? YES At least half of those quests would end up with a no if i used anything newer such as windows xp. I would also be forced to dual boot which is something I didn't want to bother with in the firts place. Why end your session to change O/S just to do one thing when windows 98 can handle it all and then some? I will still use windows 98se untill the last day I can use it no longer. 'Upgrading' to a supposedly newer but lesser OS is not my idea of an upgrade. Why shoudl I sacrifice additional disk space and ram for something 'just because its newer' and doesn't do what I need? I use multitudes of unsupported software and never complained about it. Sure, we can use a virtual pc but - why go through an extra 5+ steps to set it up virtually when you can just boot into it directly with no problems? Unless you really need to for other reasons I fully understand and Will not debate that as poeple will use what they want to use as they need to use it. Again, i just do not see the need to shell out for an O/S that is a virtual downgrade in my eyes. More space use, more ram use, does less for me, runs slower, and provides more never-to-be-used features. Don't give me the dismissive 'use xp and nlite it' comments as I will just disregard it. Just because I can make it smaller won't hide the fact that it still doesn't do what I want when I want. Sure, windows 98 may not be as 'secure' according to many people but have I been 'hacked' or whatever? Absolutely not. I run in my DMZ, I leave it running 24\7, I leave ports open for services I have running such as my webserver and ftp, I also have no firewall. By most if not all standards I'm wide open and just waiting to be 'hijacked'. However, it's yet to happen for the last 5 years... Yes, I'm fully aware of the 'w9x is still alive compain' and support everybodies efforts.
  20. I would always disable systray for the mere fact that you can access what it provides easily through the command line anyway. Only reason I run it right now is due to not knowing the command to access the 'stop hardware device' applett from the command line. Otherwise I would flat out keep it disabled. Never experienced any problems with it disabled. It would free up about 2-3% resources however being disabled. I am curious however, I_D.. what problems were you experiencing with it off?
  21. July 11, 2006 actually http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=17613
  22. Might have to try it out and see. Works with some abit boards amongst others but only with boards that use f1 to enter it. .. and 896mb of ram = 512 + 256 + 128 (I'd a mixed set). Need to update my sig though... got 1gb ram in it now. 2x512 OCZ
  23. ------------ I'd say no to WDM audio drivers on an old system. They tax the limited resources, and his Dos games will no longer play FM synthesizer sounds unless using an actual ISA soundcard that has an FM chip on it. Vxd's play better with dos (and use less resources generally) as long as they have dos drivers. Wdm's don't need dos drivers, but they need games to have an MPU-401 general midi setting for the music as those that don't will not have sound (unless it's an ISA card with an FM Synth chip). ------------ .. he could also use a PCI soundblaster LIVE (5.1 digital) card and force on either the creative pci512 or stock drivers on it. As long as it's set in multimedia to use that card for wave and midi playback it will work 100% fine for dos games in windows. Even if you have more than one sound card in use... just disable the legacy emulation drivers (if they never worked right to begin with) for the other cards you have. Got my hands on this card out of a stack i was testing for compatibility. Works great for dos-in-windows for both midi\sound and no need for emulation. Also uses WDM (boo hiss!) drivers... Just configure the card to use I\O 5 and set the dos games to use general midi and soundblaster 16 sound on 5-1-6.
  24. If you access the bios by using 'f1' then perhaps try using ctrl+f1? That tends to unlock some hidden options in the bios with some boards.
  25. Thanks! Oldversion I'm actually very familiar with. I typically try to get the lowest functioning version possible since the extra weight is not neccessary. Only gripe I had is that they do not have Opera 4.02 (which I eventually got a link to from someone) for site-testing. Thanks to that site I still happily use AOL IM 1.0 edit: Looked at oldapps.com and found it has opera 4.0 and others there. Think I'll use it as a mirror site now in the event oldversion doesn't have something. Again, many thanks.
