Open source is a great dream, but the crazy thing about it then no one wants to pay for, which means you are no longer a business, which means no one gets paid. So until people can deal without getting paid for the software they write (there some out there put they also have other jobs to support them) you won't see alot of business apps on linux or open source. anyway this topic has run its course, back to vista, if you have complaints, post them in the form of A) what feature you don't like (ie i don't like how vista uses so much ram) B) post what you think could be done to make it better C) post facts to help backup the fact you researched this topic and issue thuroughly before just posting at random

i am betting that is the case, use the built in tools in the install and reformat it.

I agree Totally, i would rather MS take another 3 months if needed and fix bug/complete features rather then seeing it pushed to the door to meet a Januart Deadline for endusers that. Technically it will have to RTM in october/November Time frame to get out to users and stores by January. Hopefully they will suck it up and If they have issues they will delay it. Vista may have alot of hype, but that is also because MS has not pushed a desktop OS in 5 -6 years, people have become engrained into what they have at once they are there, they are hard pressed to change to something else. "Shiny Bling" as you put it is something that alot of the user base (remeber 70% or some of windows users are technical enough to find the power button or even worse they are a after hours Techy (shudder)) like to feel comfortable with OS and enjoy a more ascetically pleasing experience especially to the eyes. As for bloatware, everyone keeps saying bloatware but no examples... Are there features that make it bloated? is it extra services? what do you feel is there that doesn't need to be or what not. you are right, 7 gig is alot for an OS, if you are worried about that then maybe Vista starter will be a good choice, it has the smallest feature set and will have smallest footprint on the computer
-
is it a SATA drive or a IDE drive?
-
512 will hurt you, a gig would be better, 512 might be a little slow
-
very nice GSM, do you see a big difference with these services lowered?
-
for the install trying unplugging your secondary Cd drive (if you have one) if not could you be more specific about the error or get a screen shot?
-
vista is very much not ME, if you would like to point out similarities then list them, as for longhorn, it is a server product, not a desktop product, and it is also very very good NAP is probably one of the coolest new features out for it

i don't think what you are planning to do is possible, you might be able to renemae the exchange machine (but i think it is a hassle) but moving the CA isn't possible unless the machien stays the same, is it an Root CA?

That may be true. However, as a sysadmin in the military and having used the Vista beta2 and being aware of the Longhorn beta builds, I can tell you there are things in Vista to like from a military point of view. Network Access Control, USB access control, more modular design, and IE7+ all seem worthwhile things. Bitlocker, ALSR, and some of the new wizards are also nice from the security point of view. Additionally, the expanded group policy is something that interests me as a Army sysadmin. Will we move to it at RTM? Almost certaintly not. Having said that does it make sense in the Longhorn timeframe? Yes, assuming that they work the kinks out. I admit that the beta sucks up memory, but internal builds that have not gone public improve upon this alot. The real time to make that decison is after it RTMs and we can commit to a full torture test. I for one look forward to the offical testing. I will judge it then. john if you don't mind me asking with what group you admin a friend of mine's dad works with the army It group, wondering you guys worked together, @ I they use Xp and 2003, severely locked down but still that is what they use, i am sure there is *nix boxes around too...

do you get an IP adress if so what kind? is it an APIPA Ip? did you need software for your ADSL modem on XP? did you have to dail up to your modem before? need more details if you want us to help

anyone notice that the mediaplayer in vista will not player some older songs in mp3 or wma format?

so true, who would think that building a product and building all the feature that the client is looking for would kill competition, i mean really, it isn't like MS hardcoded the system so that a user couldn't install specific software..(something i am sure they could fairly easily) now that would kill competition.

All, just trying to get any thoughts, opinions, suggestions, crazy ideas for some last minute things to study for the 70-291 (implementing a Network Infrastructure on windows 2003) test, taking it friday and i feel ready but getting that "well what haven't i studied that i should know" feeling. things that i have studied DNS DHCP, NAT, firewall, DHCP relays Routing, TCP/IP Remote Access Network Security/Access any ideas would be appreciated, worked through the MS books and some other study material i have, confident on the topics above but and thoughts on more of what the test will focuse on would be great!! Thanks

yes i have been able to capture both XP and vista images with Imagex
-
download it here, connect.microsoft.com you will have to have a live ID, you can create an account for free, once logged in you can see all the beta programs that MS has to offer. one will be for Core Infrastructure Solutions 2007, this is the BDD (Business Desktop Deployment) and WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit) combined with some other tools (winPE 2.0) and ImageX, there is tons of documentation that comes with, it should be all that you are looking for
-
Biohead is right, @DVR, boot up in your Vista DVD, go to the recovery tools and repair your installation, the Bootloader that Vista uses is different the the Boot.ini file that XP uses, it will not work off of the Boot.ini.
-
why don't you try SQL server 2005 Express... it is much better then the MSDE engine
-
i have been getting errors like that too, you should check out Imagex, new way to image Vista machines, you can download the BDD 2007 off of connect.microsoft.com
-
downloading it at work now, will know tommorow, it just came out today, give it some time
