That's pretty much a nightmare : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=91 Did not happen to me though.

Revolutions Pack: I can't believe you did that !
eidenk replied to Plugs7's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
There is absolutely no reason to put this line in the batch file. I do suspect deliberate sabotage. -
Yes, use InstallWatch. See this thread : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=49820
-
Just create new shortcuts and put those lines as targets : A smaller Mixer : C:\WINDOWS\sndvol32.exe /s Directly calling the Recording Mixer (also small) : C:\WINDOWS\sndvol32.exe /r /s Same Master Volume as there is by default in the tray but from anywhere : C:\WINDOWS\sndvol32.exe /t The hidden Active Movie media player : C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL32.EXE amovie.ocx,RunDll

blahblah.reg /s Is this not already done by Gape ?

This one freezes my IE5.5SP2 (+ all security updates). I must then terminate it with a task manager. Use another browser for that site I would say. I have tried K-meleon and Opera. They both open this site with no problems.
-
I understood your first question as patched WMP versus non patched WMP.
-
Yes. No. Not really, most WMP runtime files are simply mixed with the OS files in the system folder but that's it. The OS itself doesn't need any of them. MS just makes it complicated by not using a specific subfolder to put all the WMP runtime files in. XP now ships without WMP in Europe I think since a recent EEC ruling. Again no. If there is no WMP to stream multimedia content from the net there is no WMP vulnerabilities either. Or so I believe.

IE5.5SP2 on WinME here. No problems with those sites here albeit IE is slightly slower to display the Microsoft page than K-Meleon (Gecko engine like Firefox) and Opera. PS : for those who do not know the new Opera browser 8.50 is not only free but also ad-free.

Also, would it be handy if I packed all the ME hotfixes listed in this thread in one single archive and make them available on RapidShare ?

Which one ? Can you give an example url please ? Can you come here without problems ? It is php I believe.

Are you sure ? If you haven't specifically disabled it, Windows backs up your registry automatically each time you boot and keep the five last backups in c:\windows\sysbckup. Edit : Not sure it does it on Win95.

CSIDL_PERSONAL is used to get the location of My Documents programatically. Dunno if it's of any use in infs.

My Computer GUID : {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}.

I've had that type of problems several times after installing one or another security software. I always solved it by restoring an old copy of the registry.
-
Well I highly doubt that Gape's pack creates a Shellconcache. Here is why : To the best of my knowledge and observation Shellconcache is created or updated by Windows during the normal shutdown process. Windows stores in a zone of the memory the icons you see on your screen. It can store a maximum of 4092 icons (by increasing a value in the registry. Default is 500 I think). It allows the system to be more responsive by allowing icons to load faster as Windows seeks them in memory and not on disk the second time they are used. When Windows shuts down it writes those icons into a file called ShellIconcache and reloads them into memory from that file at the next startup. If for some reason you delete the ShellIconcache from your disk and never shut down your system normally like me, you won't have a ShellIconcache on disk. So that I believe that like me you have deleted your ShellIconcache some time ago and that you never shut down normally but simply power off your computer when you're done with it. But after installing Gape's pack that you monitored with one or another utility you took care to shut down properly for once and hence the ShellIconcache appeared.

It's only the first time after a fresh boot. Pressing any key usually makes the BSOD go and it is allright afterwards for the rest of the session.
-
Well, with a Batchrun script lauching and killing a copy of winamp 2.9 without plugins at startup I never see this BSOD. As for not releasing patches there is another one that is even more frustratingly missing especially with regards to Win2000 which got released the same year. It is support for large hard drives. I believe Win2000 received support for large hard drives with SP3 . But they did not fixed it for ME to the best of my knowledge.

What updates are not included in "98 SE SP 2.0.2"?
eidenk replied to lightninglord2000's topic in Windows 9x/ME
You'd rather ask Gape directly in his thread for that particular question as no one else but him can answer that. This said some of those updates offer you a choice such as the media player. Updating 6.4 or installing 7.1 or installing 9.0 ? In any case you also need the latest Windows Media Runtime 9 and the security and codec updates for the players. IE is either 5.5 SP2 + security updates or 6.1SP1 + security updates. Well the best here I think is not to bother updating MS Java Virtual Machine as MS has dropped support and devellopement for it since a long time (unless I am doing a big mistake saying that) and should install the latest Sun Java runtime. -

Internet Explorer, Media Player and DirectX aren't updated by Gape's pack as far as I know. Maybe also MDAC and MSXML. -
To BSOD WinME, do this : As soon as it is started. Run the Windows Mixer and move a volume slider on it. WinME should systematically BSOD. It is a known problem of WinME for which there is no hotfix. A workaround exist. It is running winamp first, after which you can use the mixer without BSOD. This problem showed up on the three successive hardware configurations I have been running ME on so far. I am not sure of course that it occurs with all hardware configs. Besides this, it is true that I barely ever see a BSOD. When I first used ME I first considered reverting back to SE immediately so unstable and crashy it appeared to be. It's only after tweaking I became satisfied with it. Also I don't believe running an OS for a short period of time in a virtual machine is a good way to assess its stability in general. Which service pack have you got on Win2000 ?

I have PSAPI.DLL build 5.00.2134.1 [from Win2000] in %windir%\SYSTEM [98SE OS] and it seems to work ok with NetMeter [0.9.9.9 beta 2]:http://www.readerror.gmxhome.de/ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have installed NetMeter. Unless I am wrong, it does not seem to use any psapi.dll. There is no reference to it to be found in Net Meter with Dependency Walker nor does it appear on the list of modules used by Net Meter in a task manager.

Have a look at this thread maybe: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t49385.html
