  1. Hi all would be ME service packs creators and others, I've just finally installed (almost all) MS hotfixes for Windows Millenium edition I could find. I had just installed one so far and now there are 46 of them. The only ones I left out are SP18469 which applies only for laptops and KB891711. I have not installed Petr's Microcode unofficial update either yet. Another symptom was that after deleting, copying or moving an object in the file system, the undo command would not appear immediately afterwards when right clicking on a folder background or the desktop but would take several seconds to show up. The culprit turned out to be Q273017 (ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly). It installs an updated version of Ifsmgr.vxd and modifies the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CacheWriteDelay value in the registry. I found it necessary to set the CacheWriteDelay to O to correct the wrong behaviours and have a stable system again (albeit it would seem the system now slightly hangs when saving something to disk) REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] "CacheWriteDelay"=dword:00000000 This is the file NODELAY.REG that gets copied by the installer to C:\WINDOWS\INF\QFE\273017 along with 3 others to set the CacheWriteDelay to 2, 4 or 8. This fix is identical to the one on Win98SE but I have seen that Gape's pack does not include the registry files that comes with the updated Ifsmgr.vxd, so that may be the reason why some have stability problems with his pack on 98SE if the CacheWriteDelay is not set properly. I have got no real clue but maybe this CacheWriteDelay value is hardware speed dependant to some degree and must be tweaked according to one's system. My system is quite fast, Athlon XP 2600, recent and fast HDDs. Otherwise everything seems OK, albeit I am unable to assess some of those updates as they apply to components that are long removed from my system such as PC Health and System Restore.
  2. There is one color scheme. Not what I would call a tweak. Additionally I think, no one wants Gape to add tweaks to his pack because they like for what it is. A solid and (almost) complete update to 98SE. Well, they have a specific stickie thread each, in which you can post to ask your question. If you were posting at the right place I wouldn't be giving you my unwanted answers.
  3. Hi, MDGx, I've just successfully used Net Transport 1.87 to download your link.
  4. I think you confuse two very different things : Gape's pack and Tihy's Pack. Gape's 98SE Unnofficial Service Pack is something that should have done by Microsoft itself as they have done 4 times with Windows 2000. It is a cumulated update to the OS which Microsoft didn't want to do themselves for some reasons they know better than me. All the files Gape's pack contain are legally freely redistributable. Tihy's Revolution Pack is a, so far buggy, attempt at incorporating some of the XP features into the 98SE OS by hacking and transplanting into it some non freely redistributable files of a later OS. Albeit intrisically interesting, it has no future according to me.
  5. Indeed virus scanners running in the background tend to slow down the system as they scan each potentially harmfull file the system is going to access for viruses signatures. It is the most visible when copying, moving, listing large numbers of potentially harmfull files or simply opening a directory containing many of them. Otherwise it is pretty seamless and almost unnoticeable on a fast system. At least with Antivir I am using. The OS takes much more time extracting and displaying the icons of a newly opened folder full of exe files than the antivirus takes to scan them for harmfull content for example. I wouldn't recommend browsing the net with either an IE based browser or a Gecko one without having a background virus scanner running, as security issues exist for the Gecko engine as well and many website can become temporarily infected if they are successfully attacked by hackers. This particularly applies I think to PHP boards users. Indeed, a Trojan has been intercepted on my system the other day after clicking here on a link to the Tripod domain. So don't go on the web without condoms even if you have got a slow system. Turn the antivirus scanner off only when offline.
  6. I am getting this : Have you tried to use a proxy ? Maybe your IP adress is banned from his site.
  7. Well the best place for that is following the links from MDGx's page. His site is up, unlike what you seem to say in his thread.
  8. I have noticed on my system that the latest version of Antivir creates minor problems after disabling/enabling it. Apparently it is a problem with the VXD. So that might be your problem, maybe. Otherwise I would say : have you switched to a system backup to see if the problem persists ? I know you can restore any of the first 5 backups made by ScanRegistry (it stores only 5 by default) from the command line but I don't know the syntax. Googling around that should give you an answer as to what to type. But what did you change in your system before this arose ? Your answer is there, anyway. Unless you catched some nasty virus.
  9. Though I am not using Windows 98SE nor consequently Gape's pack. I have been sometimes plagued by a similar problem on Win ME. Registry Checker tells the registry is corrupted and needs to be replaced with a backup. But at reboot it is the same. And again. For me, this problem, who very rarely occurs, always happened after a reboot due to system crash/freeze. I can always use the system if I terminate Registry Checker with a process manager or disable it from startup. To get out of the problem. I found I needed to replace the registry by hand. There should be several backups in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP. You need to extract user.dat and system.dat from one of the cab files. (It is likely that the most recent backup is corrupted which could be why Registry Checker never suceeds in restoring a clean registry so don't use this one) And replace the user.dat and system.dat that are in the windows folder with them. You can do the replace operation after rebooting into DOS or use wininit.exe to automatically replace the files before Windows boots. The latter is easier to do especially if you use a GUI tool such as CopyLock to write the wininit.ini file (this is the file who tells wininit.exe which files it must replace at boot time) Please consider using InstallWatch before you attempt to install anything, as this soft, when properly configured, allows you to revert any changes you make to your system. See here for more details : http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t49820.html PS : As well I think there is a syntax to replace the registry with a choosen backup using registry checker from DOS. But I do not know it.
  10. Thanks. I don't know if you know the Fraunhofer DVD codecs . They allow for using the front ends and play DVDs without needing any commercial software. Albeit picture quality is not that of Win DVD or Power DVD. Maybe you should include them in your list. PS : They must not be installed on top of an existing Win DVD or Power DVD installation as it is very likely they will create conflicts and playback problems.
  11. Yes, they aren't needed by the OS itself. But they are in the cabs and they aren't installed. So what are they doing there ? It's like the DVD front ends that are in 98SE and ME. They are in the cabs but you never get a chance to install them.
  12. It does not seem to me that only developers packages install those files. It seems to me they are redistributable components installed by applications who need the functionality they offer such as the one I posted above (Geomatica Free View). I'll look more into it.
  13. Are there any bad ones ? Are you desperate of grabbing some attention ? Good Idea. As for many of your recent posts they are almost unreadable because they are too long and in one single segment, that might be the reason. It was for me.
  14. IE7 download link is down (on request of Microsoft I read).
  15. Yes ME does, I thought 98SE didn't. Anyway I have tried to install WDM drivers for a BT 878 card. They don't work. I need to install Brooktree's vxds for it to work. So I don't think the WDM architecture is fully implemented on 9x.
  16. Vbar332.dll is actually part of the Win ME cabs (WIN_15.CAB). I haven't looked into the Win 98 CD I have but I have seen it listed on the net as part of Win 98SE as well. I think that originally the file is part of the redistributable files from Office 97 Develloper's Edition. DAO350.DLL as well is present in the Win ME cabs (WIN_10.CAB). What I am not sure about now is whether the OS installs those files by default or not at all.
  17. In case you've missed it, mitchellovision had its own suforum for a day or so. Like Gape. Then it has been removed along with the thread in which mitchellovision threatened to have me banned from this forum by Microsoft that has been then closed by Crispy and then moved in the new subforum that has now disappeared.
  18. Tweak to (greatly) increase local security of a 9x box : Prevent Windows 98 users from bypassing the logon screen

  20. Have a read at this : Hacking Windows 95/98 and Me. It is very good.
  21. But what drivers did you use to access the pen drive before installing the HDD Kit drivers ? Did you have the problem with your pen drive before ? It seems Win ME has built-in support for USB storage devices. The lack of which is adressed I think, in Win 98, by Maximum Decim unofficial USB update, which you can find in a stickie of the Unofficial Win 98 SP2 subforum. I forgot, I installed the nVidia USB drivers that were on my motherboard CD as well. And my USB HDD adapter seems more rudimentary than yours. I am not sure whether I actually have specific drivers for it .
  22. But what are you using as a shell ? bblean or the 95 explorer of the other post ? I think it is not good if you run bblean on top if the explorer shell, especially a downgraded one. There could be maybe conflict between the two in the handling of the eMule tray icon or the desktop display for example. Don't be too surprised if you crash the DIB engine in those hybrid circumstances. Especially with eMule which is resource hungry and may already throw you on the red with resources and render you system slightly unstable. Try disabling the colored bars in eMule as well, that's what sucks the most of the resources. I am going to tell you now how to GDI crash any 9x OS with eMule : Have lots of items in the download list (more than one or two hundred), color bars on and then just scroll down the list. At some point of your scrolling your system will terminally crash in GDI.exe (White message box with black letters) without warning. If you monitor the resources with the windows resource meter you can see them going down further you scroll the eMule list. And when they have reached 0 and you carry on scrolling, your system crashes. PS : I have noticed that you are an afficionado of 98 Revolution Pack. Have you got it installed it as well ?
