Did you have the same antivir running on your older machine ? Antivirs can significantly impact on the file system speed as they scan files on the fly for virus signatures.

During a fresh install of WinMe, all the setup files are copied by setup into windir/options/install. When installing a hotfix, updated files are also copied into this directory and into a sibling directory windir/options/cabs. AFAIK runing setup again should use the updated files copied in those directories instead of the original ones in the cabs.

SPOOL32.DLL errors with Fineprint/pdfFactory
eidenk replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have been trying several virtual Pdf printers, albeit not the one you are using and found they were all creating some bugs/problems. Now when I want to convert a document to Pdf, I import it into Open Office and output it as pdf. You might also well be inspired to look for alternatives to Fineprint for ink saving. I know there are some albeit I couldn't tell you which ones as I don't use a bubblejet printer but a laser one and hence never got interested by that. Also have you tried to boot logged and see with Bootlog Analyzer or Bootlog Examiner if something else does not negatively interfere. For example the Seagate tape drivers that are compulsorily installed by MS Backup, which you might have installed, are known to create all sorts of problems on some systems. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix

Unfortunately I did not make note of them but I will run the patch again and will post them if those occasional GDI crashes arise again. If I understand you well, the GDI resources are exclusively 16bits. Have you got any knowledge of the 32bits part of the resources, which may not be GDI but USER and SYSTEM. I understand that the 32bits resources are of an arbitrary size far below their theoretical limit unlike 16bits ones and that it should be eventually possible to set a larger amount of memory for them quite easily for someone who's got the knowledge of those inner workings. -
For those whose files are in use and are replaced after reboot there shouldn't be any particular magic as SFP monitors only file access not size or checksum AFAIK. For the others I don't know as 1) I don't use SFP at all, 2) Inf syntax is way beyond me.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Off topic eMule. I finally sorted the problem by starting from scratch with eMule again and it's now on since 24 hours. No file versions problems at all. My BSOD was due to missing vnbt.386 from TCP/IP but that wasn't the problem either as my old eMule installation was still freezing the OS after fixing that. Thanks all for your feedback. -
Certainly not with WinME as I always have a swap of fixed size (1GB) and never got such a problem.

Hi MDGx, I am bafled by this eMule error, it's several days I am after fixing that. Would you mind to send me a list of the module versions in use by eMule on your system so that I can compare it to mine. Nirsoft's Current Process utility allows to do this in a few seconds and clicks : Select the eMule process, then jump in the lower pane. Right-click to select all modules, then save as text. Thanks much if you can. Here is my email : eidenk@ntlworld.com -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Please forgive my above posts but the problem still occurs. I have been able to run emule for several hours, then I went to sleep with eMule on and when I woke up the OS was frozen again. And at reboot the BSOD was here again. Apologies for jumping too fast to conclusions here but I was too happy to have it running again. -

eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
OLEAUT 4522 finally no good for me : I hadn't used eMule since quite a long time and a few days ago I tried to use it again and to my surprise it systematically froze the entire OS (including mouse and keyboard) after about 5-10 minutes of use, forcing to reboot the PC using the power button. I did downgrade several recently updated sytstem files in use by eMule to finally find out that the culprit was OLEAUT 4522. I did downgrade to version 4275.1 from VB6.0-KB290887-X86 to clear out the problem. This also apparently cleared a non terminal BSOD during boot that I was attributing so far to some vxd. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
All I can say is that I never experience a GDI crash with any of the many image editing programs I use except sometimes when I run this patch. I use my computer enough to be able to assess that. On my system (WinME) I get GDI crashes only when I try to go below 0% but this affects all standard applications of course. I have been testing stability in this respect by running scores of applications until reaching 1 or 2% of free resources left. The system remains rock stable. Closing most of the apps then frees most of the resources and the system never GDI crashed afterwards. If I recall well, some GDI stability problems already begin to arise on Win98SE below 30%. Maybe what is written above by the U891711 author applies to Win98SE but certainly not to WinME which has apparently benefited from great improvement in this respect. What I am interested in, with respect to resources, is whether the possibilty exist to increase the size of the available resources by hacking/patching certain system files and have, say, the double to start with, which would allow to run more applications at once without falling in the red. -

Color Quality Got Removed, How Do I Reinstall
eidenk replied to thecoralreef731's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Hi again, thecoralreef731, If I was you I would do this : Right-click on the desktop. Choose Properties/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/Change/Next/Display a list/Next/Show all hardware/Trident Microsystems. There should be five different models : Trident 9320 PCI, Trident 9420 PCI, Trident 9440 PCI, Trident 9685/9680/9682/9385/9382/9385-1 PCI and Trident Super VGA. You know you don't want the last one. Try the other ones. I am almost sure the one you need is there. Alternatively you also can : Go in Control Panel/Add New Hardware. Choose Device not in the list. Click Next. Choose select Hardware from a list. Click next. Double click on Display Adapters. Scroll the manufacturer list until you find Trident Microsystems. -
Thanks, that was the reason.

Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
It's easy enough to disable it from running if one were to experience such problems which, I must say, were far from systematic but didn't arise again since I am not using it anymore. I could be trying instead to run KB891711 to see if it also sometimes happens but I don't like that hotfix so I won't personally be running neither of them, official or unnoficial. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
eidenk replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have actually stopped using it as I was sometimes getting terminal GDI crashes in image editing programs when resources were still abundant enough. I haven't switched back to the official one that I did not use before testing this one so I can't say if those problems were U891711 specific or if they arise as well with MS KB891711 v2. -

Color Quality Got Removed, How Do I Reinstall

Hey corralreef, if you would read properly the link you, yourself, give, and follow the steps they give, you'd probably have fixed your problem by now, I think : -
Unless I've missed some setting it doesn't seem to launch urls anymore which is a pity as this was (for me) its greatest feature.

I've just installed the service pack (all options but metapad checked) on a fresh Win98SE install under a virtual machine (in QEMU) and I suffer from none of the problems Jimmsta describes above. Everything works as normal. Very nice service pack by the way. I also think that Wintop from the win95 kernel toys should be included. Maybe also the Timezone Editor and the DOS Mode Configuration Wizard.

newbie can't shut down w98se ... it keeps rebooting
eidenk replied to Molecule's topic in Windows 9x/ME
This key is allright. It does exist on a fresh OS install. For your keyboard laging, if it still does. It must be IntelliType the culprit.
