  1. What else have you got installed such as DVD player and Direct Show filters ?
  2. Download from elsewhere than MS update. Here for example : http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie...SP2/ie55sp2.exe.
  3. The above link still does work fine for me. Does someone know why some links are reachable from one place and not from another ?
  4. Google and you will easily find download links for IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6 SP1.
  5. Tweaking your cache settings will certainly help with that : Cache Booster
  6. Tell me something. Aren't you afraid of having unusual dlls and vxds loaded ? Or are you just concerned with exes because it's the only thing you obviously see with the task manager.
  7. I am French. I just only happen to live in the UK. Something else you might want to try : Unregister webcheck.dll (if you don't use Active Desktop) by typing this in the run box : regsvr32 /u webcheck.dll. This file is much reponsible for the sluggishness of Windows systems.
  8. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE ? IEradicator Otherwise I have found those tweaks on my disk (never tried them) : REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP] "DefaultRcvWindow"="32767" or REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP] "DefaultRcvWindow"="65535" And maybe try playing around with TweakDUN
  9. There is no 'safe' windows box I think. I fully understood it yesterday when posting in this thread. You might want to read it.
  10. Many thanks to MDGx for his page and support here and to NirSoft for WinUpdatesList. You can begin to put your Windows ME Service Pack together now, mitchellovision. There is all the links you need I think to start with. May I suggest you try to include OPPCOM for Windows ME. I think it's a must. I'll be testing removing some of those updates as my problems are not entirely solved. I still have the undo function that lags sometimes and it's quite annoying as it is several seconds.
  11. You must hack a system file (dunno which one) and probably just delete an entry in a menu with Reshacker. Otherwise it is easy to remove the new menu entirely in the registry but that's not what you want to do I understand.
  12. One is never paranoid enough and for sure firewalls aren't foolproof at all for outgoing traffic. I have always such doubts before installing any security update. Are they correcting a flaw that has been discovered to replace it by a new one ? The best way to know if "snapshots" are sent out is to capture your network packets and look at the data. For doing this there are several tools you can use but all rely on using WinPcap. There is Packetyzer, Ethereal, Analyzer, BillSniff, EtherSnoop or others. Most are free. Those I have listed are. A good one is Nuzzler Intrusion Detection System 3.0 but I see it cannot be downloaded anymore from its makers. Version 2.0.7 here. Of course if such an hypothetical Trojan (who could be any loaded dll and there are scores of them in a system) is intelligent enough to send data out only when there is a lot of normal outgoing traffic such as when doing filesharing, it will be much more difficult if not next to impossible to detect. PS : And if it is smart enough to detect packet sniffers running and not send anything while they are running you cannot detect such a Trojan at all unless you manage to capture the packets from outside of your machine. But this requires some more knowledge and hardware than I have. A minimalist linux box with the proper tools between the Windows box and the modem I would imagine would probably be the thing to do if one wanted to be absolutely sure (and had enough time to spend on that) that no "snapshots" are made by government agencies exploiting a flaw introduced for that purpose by MS as you seem to suggest. PS : I have problems with the latest winPcap 3.1 drivers that I have just installed. It won't recognize the network adapters in some apps. 3.0 are working fine.
  13. Some apps load spool32.exe even if there is no printer. Then it remains running even after the app has closed. Editpad that I am using as my Notepad replacement does it. And if I delete spool32, Editpad won't fully load anymore. Anyway spool32 running or not does not seem to affect stability and performance.
  14. Anyway nLite removes components but needs a huge runtime (.net framework) to be installed first before running it.
  15. I woud say use OggVorbis aoTuv quality 0.5 for possibly one of the best quality/ size compromise. Otherwise try Aac or Musepack. http://www.rarewares.org/ogg.html http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php Of course converting from a lossy format will never improve quality.
  16. What does this mean ? It is part of choose.inf, quiet.inf and reboot.inf in the Media Player 6.4 installer.
  17. I have found I have something called winmeddk.exe on my disk. It's 1.4 Mb and the note says : I don 't know if you have that (it's not on your page) or are interested by it, MDGx. I don't know where I got it from, maybe on MS FTP site.
  18. Does not work on Win ME. I am using that one since a long time now. It works seamlessly with Windows ME. You can use it as an additional Explorer and/or IE toolbar and/or Shell extension. There is a dll for each plus a menu items/options editor. I am just using it as a toolbar. You'll have a far superior tool by getting WAssociate and putting it in the send to menu or in the context menu for all files. Unfortunately this does not work in 9x systems but mp3infp does. It adds a tag editor property sheet extension for m3u, mp3, wav, avi, asf, wma, wmv, ogg, ape and vqf. As we are in the audio stuff, there is of course the superb dbPowerAmp to right click convert between many file formats (almost all with the plugins) I'll be trying if it works on 9x. I use a similar tool that I have translated from japanese. See this thread : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=49385In the same vein there is Context View to display preview of images in the right click-menu. Recognized filetypes can be extended to almost any filetypes by the use of Susie input plugins. There is also Vueicons and Xentient Thumbnails to display icons of image filetypes as previews of themselves in Explorer. I am using both. Vueicons because it is faster and Xentient for png as Vueicons does not support this format. Best of the Best that is. But if you haven't got enough whith it, have a go with Fast Explorer or More Actions. A couple of others I am using permanently : Copy Url. It allows to copy an url adress to the clipboard through the right click. Link Open allows to open the container folder and preselect the target of any shortcut. I use it to replace the old MS power Toy "Open Target Folder" which is more functional but buggy (crashes the explorer if using it on an unresolved shortcut on the desktop) and never got fixed. Enough for today
  19. Get yourself Stroke It. With it you can go back and through with mouse gesture in Explorer and IE.
  20. Normal Copy and Move uses the clipboard.

  22. Thanks MDGx for your observations. Finally just only Q892211 was missing. That's the Web Folders Update. I have it as well just only I did put it in the wrong folder so I didn't install it.
  23. Hi MDGx, If you jump to all the above links and tell me which one you haven't got (if any) and tell me, it'll be easier and quicker I think, than me trying to match both lists. What's listed above is all I have and many (if not all) from your page. But as I have used other start points to gather files there might one or two you haven't got. So please tell me if you miss any of the above.
