  1. Hmm...the virus reminds me of the movie "The Matrix" for some reason...dunno why though.
  2. Well hopefully I'll be able to do at least 1 by the end of the summer, but for now...
  3. Nitro I'm insulted you'd think I'd mix the two . The solution turned out to be that the Vista PE header is different somehow and that it needs to be patched to be compatible with XP; check out this site: http://www.joejoe.org/XP_Ports. Now my next question is how you can patch any Vista EXE to work with XP.
  4. Why can't I run any of the Vista programs on XP? For example, try the Vista calc.exe and you get the error: F:\Windows\System32\calc.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
  5. Nuhi might not want to work on a version of nLite for Vista yet, since the code is not yet finalized and many things could change in that time.
  6. Well there are 4 or even 8 slot Socket 940 mobos out there. Only thing is that they cost at least a grand, and the cheapest Opty 800-series processor costs 3/4 of a grand . If you buy 4 of those and the motherboard, then you've already used up $4000. Imagine how much you'd bench on PCMark though...
  7. If you can get into awdflash or whatever flash program is used, there should be an option to force the flash even if the checksums are mismatched. That's how I once messed up my BIOS . Forced it to flash even though the BIOS reported that the file was for a completely different mobo. Usually it's a better idea to just replace the mobo.
  8. The earliest quad-core that's coming out is the Intel Kentsfield, which is basically two Conroe cores slapped onto a single processor. It should come out in Q1 2007, which isn't too far away, and will be compatible with Socket 771 Intel mobos that are out now. So if you have a Dempsey/Woodcrest mobo already, then you don't have to upgrade much to support Kentsfield. The problem is that Socket 771 mobos are server motherboards, meaning they can cost $500 average. If you're looking for a good Kentsfield mobo check this one out: http://www.iwill.net/product_2.asp?p_id=108. It's smaller than most server mobos (ATX) and supports SLI. Iwill also is one of the few server mobo manufacturers that add overclocking options to their board, meaning you can buy a lower-clocked Kentsfield when it comes out, and OC the hell out of it . Forgot to mention that all Socket 771 mobos support two processors, so you can easily have an 8-core system. Nvidia's dual-core G80 should be released around the same time, and if they come out with a Quad-SLI design for it...

    Paging File

Zxian I believe you're mistaken. I've done some (a lot) of XP Embedded work, and there have been scenarios where a client would use PXE RAM boot to download an XP image off a remote server and run everything in RAM, without a physical hard drive available. You can't really argue that XPE is different since it's based off of the same code as XP, so if a page-file free XPE system can run Word, Excel, Acrobat Reader, IE, Photoshop, etc. just fine, why can't XP? And I tried the experiment you suggested about cutting down the RAM. I cut it down to 256MB from 2GB, but the RAM usage didn't go down significantly enough to be attributed to something beyond the margin of error. What you were really observing was the way Windows manages system resources. With less RAM, Windows would spend less on caching, buffering, etc.
  10. Most likely you have a trojan. From what I've searched, aaa1screensavers.com is a free screensaver site that bundles spyware with their screensavers, although the site appeared to be down when I checked. So have you installed any screensavers lately?
  11. Reducing 2k3 is just like reducing XP, although there are some server components that need to be removed. If you need any help with it, just PM me.

    Paging File

Running without a page file is fine. I've done it for a while now, and haven't noticed any side effects. If there's a program that doesn't work well without a page file, then either it's taking more than 2GB of RAM (most desktop apps shouldn't) or it was poorly programmed.

    Paging File

It depends. The first partition usually corresponds to the inner tracks of a hard drive, which is the fastest area, and the place where your page file should be. The further out the partition, the slower access to the page file will be. On the other hand, 2.5GB of RAM is enough to run any application comfortably without a page file.
  14. Hmm...taking drives apart sounds like fun. I wonder how my Raptors look naked and stripped (and not in a RAID array either ).
  15. The XS link is dead.
  16. Patch up, use a firewall, antivirus, antispyware, the usual...
  17. Did you add any new hardware lately? Try removing anything that you might've added within that time period. Also try disabling Hyperthreading if you have it enabled.
  18. Wasn't there software that hides the command window from being shown while executing? I think it was Cmdow.
  19. No. You can only do it the other way around. You can put a 1x card into a 16x slot, but a 16x-slotted card will not physically fit into a 1x slot.
  20. I think you read putting a PCI-E card into a faster rated PCI-E slot.
  21. If you have an XP CD, you can check there. Otherwise you might be able to steal the files from an extracted SP2 install.
  22. Change the permissions. Normally you'll need to take ownership of the folder and all child objects. It becomes a pain at times...might want to consider using FAT32 instead.
  23. Or it may just be that Epox motherboards always report the wrong Vcore setting. I'm not sure though, but it would explain a lot of things, like my Opteron 165 sucking up 2.65V and still staying below 40C .
  24. I prefer Samsung or LG monitors. Samsungs are a bit expensive, but they're the highest quality monitors around. LG also makes good monitors, but theirs are cheaper. Refresh rate really doesn't matter, since all LCD monitors are capable of and limited to 75Hz. It all depends on what you like. Just try to stick with a good brand.
