Check out the new features and see if there's anything worth upgrading for. CS2 does seem slower, but if you have dual-core, it has better support for it.

What was it again...a $200 or $250 card? You can get the X-Fi at Newegg for $70-$80 usually.

Poll results thus far are ironic, to say the least. People complain all the time about how they hate IE and WMP being tightly integrated into Windows, but yet that's exactly what WDS does, and people are flocking to that software. Am I missing something here? GDS can't be that bad...

I don't think the vendors have updated their prices yet. Wait a few more days and then check.
-
Hehe, you wish! X-fi's still a better card than the Xplosion.

And if anyone still has any doubts about the deal: http://www.amd.com/us-en/0,,3715_14197_141...ml?redir=goBG01

Interesting...I was playing with VMware when I started noticing the crackling sound in the background. Since I had an X-Fi, I immediately assumed that I was suffering from the notorious crackling/popping noise bug. I booted to a different OS and amazingly the problem stopped. Investigated a bit and turns out that VMware mutes Line-In, which then results in the noise. Once I unmuted it, the crackling disappeared. Maybe this was the issue all along . Hope someone can confirm this.

The two CPUs are indeed flopping around . It only momentarily goes up to 1900MHz and immediately goes back down. And just for testing's sake, how do you enable the .5 multipliers?

Aren't the GameXStream high-watt power supplies? Conroe, as we all know, isn't a power-hungry beast, so you can easily get away with 300-400W if you have a single GFX card, 500W if you have SLI. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showd...?i=2795&p=7

Lots of bad things. They're stuck in an interesting position now. ATI's main revenue apart from GPUs are their chipsets. And for the uninformed, these chipsets are mostly targeted for Intel processors. So if AMD drops that market, then their stock price will suffer, but if they don't, then they're helping their competitor. Also Nvidia was the best AMD chipset manufacturer. With ATI in AMD's backpockets now, I'm not sure Nvidia will still want to make chipsets for them, although if they don't, expect their stock prices to drop as well. Overall, an interesting and very chaotic scenario, with the end result being prices rising from the decreased competition.

No idea how to edit polls ...And VistaGlance wouldn't fit anyway, after I add none and other.

I think the registry entries are null, meaning you can't view them with a regular registry editor. Try to see what turns up with RegNulDelete at the Sysinternals site.
-
As far as I know, they've taken down the registration site, so it's too late to beta test. The roadmaps I've seen suggest that it should be out before the end of 2006.

Sorry if a similar poll already exists. Did a search and surprisingly, I couldn't find such a poll. I think I listed all of the major desktop search applications. Sad thing is, I've tried every one of them, and my favorite is still Google Desktop Search. It's not nearly as powerful as dtSearch or ISYS, but I like the simple web interface. Might've gone with dtSearch, if it weren't dependent on Internet Explorer. WDS was also a possible alternative, but it was dependent on Windows Explorer. Anyway, enough about my preference. Tell me about yours!

Personally, I'm looking forward to Server 2003 SP2 more than Vista. The Rolodex task switching is not nearly as cool (or useful) as the Mac Expose feature. DirectX10 doesn't really appeal to me since I don't have the hardware. And I'd be scared to trust my data to an OS with nearly everything designed: kernel, audio, graphics, and network stacks, core Windows applications, overall architecture, etc. It's just going to be a domino effect in terms of security/stability. I wouldn't be surprised if Vista had more patches in the first few months than even XP. Change isn't good when you're talking about Microsoft.

There's no way to stop the spam ! Gave up and just started another Gmail account. Lesson learned: don't trust anyone with your email.

Is there any tool to monitor if it's working though?

CAT is a catalog file containing digital signatures. It is not a file container, so you can't add/delete/view files in it. I think what you're referring to is a CAB file, which are cabinets (similar to ZIP files) that you can store things in. Not sure how you create CAB files containing more than one file, but there's no way to just add files to an existing cabinet, so you'll have to delete it first, then create a new one with your modded files inside.

Since when did RAM run at 1800MHz?
-
That can't be right. CnQ is equivalent to Intel's Speedstep, which are both P-States.
-
I suspect that's the search index file, otherwise I can't think of what else would grow in size and reside in the System Volume Information folder.

Every time that you start up your computer, the resolution changes many times. The bootup resolution has a weird, non-standard resolution and the monitor will try to optimize itself for that resolution. However, most BIOSes undergo another resolution change before the monitor has been optimised, so the next time you reboot, it tries to optimize itself again. Try to press the pause-break key to see if you can pause the boot process and give your monitor enough time to adjust itself. You can also go into the BIOS options and manually press the Auto-adjust button on your monitor.
