  1. Clas, this was taken from readme in fix I got from here: "Since your using Win98, you can use System File Checker (instead of going into DOS) to replace Browseui.dll & Browselc.dll. When you replace the first file, System File Checker will ask you to reboot (because the file is in use)... select "NO", then replace the second file. When System File Checker asks you to reboot the second time, choose "Yes". Here's a little less cluttered set of instructions on how to complete the whole process: 1) Copy & paste IE 6 SP1's Browseui.dll (Q867282 version) & Browselc.dll (Original version) from Windows > System folder to Program Files > Internet Explorer folder. 2) Replace IE6 SP1's Browseui.dll & Browselc.dll in the Windows >System folder with IE 5.5 SP2's Browseui.dll (Q867282 version) & Browselc.dll (Original version) using System File Checker (as described above). 3) Reboot The "Move and/or Delete Files Hang" should now be gone. I noticed something "good" by following the directions in Shuey's post... By moving IE6 SP1's Browseui.dll & Browselc.dll to Internet Explorer's folder, you avoid the first 2 problems I had listed earlier: 1. Toolbars can no longer be locked in IE. 2. The Media sidebar in IE no longer works / appears. It must be that, because those files are in IE's folder, iexplore.exe uses those files instead of the ones in the System folder. Explorer.exe still uses the ones in the System folder, and that's why the "Hang" bug disappears. This problem will still occur though: 3. You can't set custom java permissions in IE Options > security zones... the button no longer appears. "
  2. As an aside, I'm using a Diamond Supra 2750 PCI modem, mfgd in 96[AFAIK] that works better[faster troughput] than any of newer modems I've tried. Newer is not always better
  3. Just downloaded DSL[**** small linux] ISO last night, 49.1mb, 4 hrs 7 mins. Not to bad for dial-up
  4. Downloaded ISO of Suse bout 6 mos ago, 7 days @ 6 hrs a day[12am-6am]. I use "Free Download Manager" http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ Nother good one is "Fresh Download" http://www.freshdevices.com/freshdown.html
  5. PM me, as I have all cabs for 98se which[as stated above] is all you'll need. Just put them in C:\ Windows\ Options\ folder, if you don't have it create it, then point install prgm there. Conversely, you can go to Ebay & see if you can purchase another copy of 98se so as to have disk for later installs.
  6. Have you tried going to Compaq website, entering your model#, and see if they have specific instructions for a restore?
  7. Unless he's changed, he doesn't mind being corrected when he's wrong. I've called him on things a couple of times & he corrected them. He's only human, and doesn't know/remember everything, although sometimes thinks he does! What I didn't appreciate was the demeaning way he talked about 98se and all the terrific work you people are doing here!
  8. I have no conflicts & I'm running both, have the latest vers. AFIK Sun & MS java have'nt conflicted for a long time
  9. What is under the red X is dowload link
  10. You got a hairball stuck in your throat or something??? Or just a basic misunderstanding of humor.
  11. Thanks for reply to my stupid ? jaclaz, it hit me about an hr later[smacks head on desk repeatedly]
  12. If your BIOS supports it, can you boot directly from cd w/o using a floppy?
  13. Jeeeezzz Erpdude, where were you about 3 hrs ago when I needed "Superman" to get thru the MS crap? Ya gotta hang closer to a Telephone booth
  14. hougtimo, what you fail to realize is: 1. Your in a "Windows95/98/98se/ME" forum. 2. Not everyone reasons the way you do[thankfully]. 3. We've been down this road before, and are thoroughly tired of 9x bashers coming to this forum, so take it somewhere else or put a sock in in it!
  15. I sing praises to them all the time[LOL!] Wouldn't have such a great 98se w/o them
  16. Clas, thanks for the great disertation on "WU" ! Hope you don't mind if I use it[with kudos & proper reconition of author] in my little local[printout] newsletter. B)
  17. I use a prgm called "1st Impression" by Gromada software, it's an older prgm that allows you to change all your boot logos or even have them rotate. Google it to find a download as it's no longer listed at Gromada site
  18. I hear that MDGx, I keep a CD image[3 actually] & use Power Quest's "Second Chance" for restore points[too bad they got gobbled up by MS] + sync/backup to USB hdd. May be redundant but works for me All core prgm installs are on D:/, they never move, E:/ is my add/subtract/play, C:/ is OS only, for tight & lite image.
  19. Less expensive is better, but it depends on mobo support of ram, if mobo will support 512mb go with 256mb[naturally] as you can always kick it to 384mb or 512mb later. Also make sure you place ram in slot 1[usually closest to cpu]
  20. Andromeda 43 read my sig[last line] I "futz" with windows all the time & I don't have hemhoroids, ulsers or anything close to it. If anyone thinks I'm a pain in the kester they can say so, no foul or offense taken If you don't "futz" you can't learn & might as well not get out of bed in the morning. JMHO
  21. I actually run AVG[latest free] + Avast[latest free] simultaneously with no conflicts, try that with any of the others, nothing but errors & crashes! Norton has just plain s..ked for a long time!
  22. Krick, did you read the reviews? seems that a couple of probs did crop up, overall pretty good, but you should read in case you run into anything
  23. Thanks MDGx, I think "Killbin" is the one I'll use
  24. AVG is definitely the one to go with, have had for 4 yrs w/no probs
