  1. On a side note to Gapes reply, my mobo has onboard video thats limited to 64mb ram, I have not tried adding an AGP card to it yet as I am trying to max out my ram first[2gb]. In some of the post I have seen in other forums they are running 98se on 64bit systems, so I would have to guess that hardware also has something to do with it.
  2. Thanks eidenk, I wouldn't trouble with it but it seems Win insists on reseting it to 10% every so often & it's become a PIA! I set it to 0% & "Do not move files to Recycle Bin" but it doesn't seem to stick for very long, then reverts...Grrrrr Ya, I do delete constantly, but don't want to empty trash or have it take up space. I use Shift/delete but sometimes forget[LOL] & have ended up w/ 20+ mb in trash[color me lazy]
  3. Pykor, I'm not suggesting it can be done, I've done it and I can tell you it will run just fine on 1.5gb. LLXX says he has run 2gb, so its possible that far. LLXX, I'll be interested to know if it'll go to 3gb, my current mobo will only handle 2gb but will be nice to know for future
  4. Is it possible to completely remove the recycle bin? I have absolutely no use for it, triple redundancy backup prevents me from deleting anything important w/o going to alot of trouble. Am mutipartitioned & keep having to set recycle bin to "0%/do not use recycle bin" once a week. Am running 98se+USP[latest]+982ME[latest] TIAFAI
  5. I'm running 1gb & have run 1.5gb[borrowed a 1gb stick from friend], am currently trying to save enough up to get to 2gb, some people in this forum say that they successfully run 2gb all the time. For more info on what people say go to post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=60251&st=30 and read , vcache setting has alot to do with running over 512mbs ram along w/your set. See my specs in signature
  6. Kartel, I'm running PC2700 DDR w/no probs FSB=400, currently at 333 cause thats what processor takes.
  7. USP 2x sets this value [vcache] MaxFileCache=393216 =384mb I've set it as low as [262144]=256mb & have run 1.5gb PC2700 ram successfully. Am currently waiting till I can afford another 1gb stick, then will run 2gb
  8. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you also, thank you for all your hard work in keeping 98 alive & kickin! Merry Christmas to all Happy New Year everyone
  9. As LLXX said it'll work & fast on that kind of setup, plus you have the added benefit of later on upgrading to another OS, or even dual booting
  10. I use EasyCleaner 2, RegSeeker & CCleaner, never had a problem w/any of them
  11. All of a sudden I've got ghost usb hdd drives, didn't show up right away, was a couple of days later. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? Doesn't affect performace, just annoying
  12. If you have "QuickView" enabled you can view most all file types with it, if enabled it will be on right click menu near top, as Pantner said if you can't figure out which prgm to use, Google. A good prgm to tweak with is Xteq v6.6[freeware] at: http://www.x-setup.net/home.asp It will allow you to enable QuickView & also alot of other handy settings
  13. Try this for RAR's, 40 day trial http://www.rarlab.com/ Excelent prgm, you might decide to buy
  14. You can add Maxtor PL series to the list of drives that work with NUSB, I tried to get my Sandisk Cruzer to work too, but no joy there, have to use Sandisk drivers
  15. I've had no problems with partitions as large as 100gb, 20gb is no sweat, I hold my primary at 4.5gb so I can image it to a DVD for backup/reinstall. After that it's what you want to the 137gb limit
  16. MDGx thanks for explaination, I ran into same prob & was gonna post, but saw PsycoUnc's and decided to see answer. As usual, you had one! Can I borrow your brain, mine seems to be sadly lacking most times[LOL!] PsycoUnc, I feel for you, my wife has similar probs so I know the grouchy part, painful it is! Merry Christmas & happy New Year to all
  17. Hey, these guys work for MS, supposedly in security, tell them it's stupid! I'm just passing on what I read in Spyware Info
  18. Wasn't quite sure where to post this [Admins move as necessary]. This came in my "Spyware Info" newsletter. More Ways To Surf Safely In the last newsletter, I suggested creating a limited user account on your computer and using that to surf the internet. As a limited user, it becomes very difficult for malware to attack the browser and install itself. As it turns out, there is an even simpler way to do this. Several people wrote to mention a program written by a Microsoft programmer called DropMyRights. This program allows you to use your computer as an administrator while opening programs with limited rights. It is a much easier way to surf the web than what I described last time. You install the program, then move the .exe file to another folder, "c:lowrights" for example. Then you right-click on your desktop and create a new shortcut. To create a shortcut that loads Internet Explorer with limited rights, this is what you would put as the location: c:lowrightsdropmyrights.exe "c:program filesinternet exploreriexplore.exe". When you launch Internet Explorer with that shortcut, the DropMyRights program will give it the same permissions as a limited user. You cannot install or run ActiveX and most of the methods used to install malware will fail. I tested this out on a couple of very nasty web sites and absolutely nothing happened. You still see the prompts asking permission to install ActiveX controls. However, nothing happens even if you say yes. You can test this out at SpywareInfo. We have a page that will load an ActiveX spyware scanner designed by X-Block and it is perfectly safe. The page is at http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php . If you ever have a legitimate need to install an ActiveX control, you can simply launch Internet Explorer with the normal shortcut. This also works with any other program on the computer. Just create a shortcut to the program, with dropmyrights.exe in front of the program's location and it will launch that program with limited rights. That means you can do this with your email or instant messenger programs. A few people mentioned a similar program, also written by Microsoft programmers. This one does the exact opposite of DropMyRights. MakeMeAdmin lets you log in as a limited user, but launch certain programs with administrator rights. It is similar to the Windows "Run As" function. The difference is that this program gives administrator-level rights to your limited account just before launching a program. Of the two programs, it probably is safer to use MakeMeAdmin while logged in as a limited user. That way you cannot accidently launch Internet Explorer or your email program with full rights. Both of these programs give you a very elegant way to avoid much of the risk associated with the internet. If you (or a family member) are constantly fighting a spyware infection, this may be the solution to the problem. 19. I would say the same as Jlo, I couldn't find anything on it either, so would assume it's a blackhat entry, try deleting it from safe mode or DOS Jlo 555 you're refer.....ing to what!
  20. Ya, it's the best[simplest] way outside of USP2, I edited my Vcache before I used USP, found it on some forum & was running 768mbs, am now running 1GB w/no probs
