  1. hopefully your batter backup would pick that up.. but then if configured properly should safely shut down your servers. Sounds like a long time consuming process....
  2. not sure how your OU structure is but this may work if you wanted to do it quick and painlessly http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/36/6/
  3. this is kinda silly and mildly not what you are looking for.. But for my network, when I want to know who is logged into what computer. I open up symantec system center from Norton Corporate. It tells me who is logged on to what computer from the main interface. But ofcourse this is only if you have symantec corporate managed clients installed on your network.
  4. fastest and easiest ways to remove any open connections are to reboot both machines.. then before you do anything.. join your laptop to the domain..
  5. a couple of things..to be totally honest wit you .. i cannot gather what you are trying to accomplish.. but Ensure your uplink ports are untagged which means they do not care about vlans and just forward the information. and My personal opinion is I dont think any site does a better job at explaining switching and routing better than this one http://www.routeralley.com/ra/guides.html check out the VLAN's and VTP document.. see if it is any help.
  6. We used and purchased this software and it works well. It is how we track all of ours.. They have a non crippled version for 30 days you could use to track all that you need and just report off of it... then just track it from there.. We dumped it all into an excel spreadsheet and tracked it from there until we actually ended up buying the software.. http://manageengine.adventnet.com/products...management.html
  7. you could use the multi user version of wordpress.. basically integrated user databases http://mu.wordpress.org/
  8. Try bootvis to see where the delay is at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=664
  9. 1. You can drag it where ever.. it really doesnt matter all that much.. 2. You wouldnt benifit from it unless you wanted security. Subnet masking isnt easy to just "Touch the surface" then expect you to manulate it. But... with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and an ip address of 192.168.1.2 - 50.. your subnet is the entire 192.168.1.x address (minus 192.168.1.0 and .255) To use "subnetting" with the second 10 computers.. you would have to use an ip address with a seperate network address.. so in this case to keep it simple 192.168.2.x. then you could label the computers with 192.168.2.1-10. Now.. for those computers to communicate with each other you will need a router(or a layer3 switch) in between them. here is a buddy of mine's site http://www.routeralley.com/ra/ and here is the ip subnetting document if you want to know more http://www.routeralley.com/ra/docs/ipv4.pdf
  10. This is a very tedious process and it really all depends on what your company is willing to spend as far as tracking software. The best one that I have found is ServiceDesk Plus.. http://manageengine.adventnet.com/products/service-desk/ it will scan software on remote machines and create lists of all the software. The manual part of finding out what you ACTUALLY own is the hardest part.. Pretty tedious process.. If you have open volume licensing that makes things real easy also..
  11. Prolly the best site out there http://petri.co.il/ then there is http://msexchange.org those are the only 2 that I really go to when I am looking for exchange server information.
  12. Here is what I use http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/34/6/
  13. I have used this at a few places http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/27/6/
  14. This could be a number of things.. what type of email server is this. is it hosted by you or by a web provider do you have an mx record for your domain name is your mx record pointing to the correct ip address.
  15. never actually thought about that.. but yeah .. DNS uses port 53 and dns is a udp based protocol. If the company has internet access.. they have to have port 53 open somewhere.
  16. yeah what he said.. number lock and laptop.. that is your problem..
  17. Here is what I do on all my computers, work and home.. http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/6/6/ as far as putting it out to a whole OU. I dont h ave a way of doing it yet.. Ill see what I can come up with.
  18. I did once have this problem... and yes it was due to the server service not starting.... this was almost 2 years ago though.. I do not remember how/what I did to fix it...
  19. take the script from here http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/17/6/ and change the line strComputer = inputbox("Enter Target computer's IP or name.",title) to strComputer = "." then execute this from the command shell that you have through netcat.
  20. by WSS are you talkin WSUS or something else... do you have the root of that site available.. (ie http://server/path ... is http://server ... blank?) you could use this method http://lazynetworkadmin.com/content/view/12/6/ if that is the case.. if the root is not.. you could always point it to another server and have it redirect using the method in the link.
  21. I use Joomla for 2 of my other sites. Both have either phpbb or simple machine forum integrated using community builder and their associated bridge. Pretty easy to manage But yes. the interface is a little silly for the novice user... However.. NOT giving them access to the admin backend but still giving them the ability to publish the content from the front end and using the module "My Content", people can easily write stuff for the site without seeing the backend. I use that on my http://www.lazynetworkadmin.com website for another guy I know to post stuff. It works great for what I am looking for.. and he never has to see the back side. In my opinion it meets all your requirements if you use it as I mentioned above.. Other than that.. Drupal is probably the most robust in the simplest form.. For me though.. it wasnt very inviting.. From my experience in the Joomla/Mambo CMS's.. Most people moved away from Mambo and are now developing for Joomla.. yes most is still compatible until version 1.1 comes out. But development seems to be going further in joomla than mambo.. and the reason why all the developers up and left Mambo and made joomla was because Mambo was going to commercial parts of mambo and the developers wanted to keep it opensource.. so Best bet is sticking to Joomla The other site I have it on is http://www.fusioncrew.org incase you wanted to see the other.. I can also tell you that while looking for the perfect CMS.. I downloaded and installed roughly 35 others including all you mentioned above and then some.. My rankings go Joomla/Mambo(CMS) Wordpress(blogging) Zenphoto(photo album) Drupal(CMS) Xoops(CMS) PHPwebsite(CMS) PHP Nuke(CMS) The only reason php nuke is up there is because they have a ton of plugins for it.
  22. Search by KB number would be cool.. Great product by the way.. This has already come in handy when Windows update stopped responding on one of my PC's.
  23. The problem with changing it from UDP to TCP is the other end has to be willing to accept a TCP packet.. They are not interchangeable. With TCP there are handshakes and acknowledgements.. .UDP there are none.. Tunneling UDP over TCP can be done as those links describe... but only if the other end completes the tunnel.. The best way I can think of for you.. depending on what type of firewall you have.. allow those UDP packets out of your network(specifically the Hamachi packets) or set up some sorta proxy on the outside of the network that will complete the UDP/TCPtunnel and forward the packets to the mediation server using UDP you could also set up a rule in your firewall to allow UDP packets destine for the mediation server out.
