Well, it's been a day of resolving my own problems! The delay in opening folders is simply due to trend Micro Anti-spyware having 'check programs before they execute' enabled. Oh well, that's that sorted.

Thanks Chili, but my OS is Windows 2000. Also, it's not the start-up time that's bothering me but the delay in opening a drive icon and then the folders inside (each folder and sub-folder has the same delay). It takes about 2 seconds, which is a LONG time, and I'm sure it didn't used to do that! Cheers, Jeep.

Hi- I have just reinstalled my OS and everything else. The install's been going well, nice and stable, however I find that, say, from inside My Computer, my individual drive icons take about 2 seconds to open. I am running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz system (Asus A7V133 mobo) with 1 x HDD on the primary master IDE (partitioned as 40GB C: drive (system) and 80GB D: drive (data, docs, etc). I also have 2x40GB UDMA-5 drives on the primary Promise ATA100 IDE with a 4th 32GB UDMA-4 drive on the secondary of this controller (the board has 4 IDE controllers). The drives weren't as slow to open before installing some of the software/hardware. Could it be my anti-virus protection program? It's just a bit annoying and I wonder if anyone can see anything obvious that might be causing the delay. More info can be given if required. Thanks very much!

Hi- I've just bought an OEM Pioneer DVR-111 DVD drive. When I push the ejecty button on the front of the unit, the drive doesn't open, but when I go into 'My Computer' and click on the drive icon, then it ejects. Is there some simple setting somewhere that needs to be made, or could this be caused by a faulty drive unit? I've updated the firmware, but still the same result. Does seem odd, as if something's over-riding it... Cheers, Jeep.

Thanks for that. I've heard elsewhere that Win 2K sorts out its own IRQs (?). I have nine (!) items sharing IRQ9 with nothing on 4 others. However, I think now that this is OK and the problem lies elsewhere (cpu/psu), although my machine is behaving itself just now. I might look into it further later, but right now I've had enough of putting cards in & out! I guess I may have had PnP switched on in the BIOS when I reinstalled everything last week. Oh well, maybe my PC (i.e. Microsoft) knows best...

I have just been rebuilding my trusty old Asus A7V133/Athlon 1.2 PC which was originally designed to run Matrox RT2500 / Adobe Premier video system. OS is Windows 2000 SP4. This time round I am using onboard sound (AC97 - as opposed to separate sound card) and a WinTV card. I am still using additional 2 drives on separate Promise IDE controller. Actually, I've added a 3rd drive to the secondary Promise IDE, giving me a total of 4 drives plus 1 DVD. PSU is...can't remember, but possibly 300W. However, after having the whole system running nicely for a day or two, it now completely crashes when I run Premier. I had a look at the IRQs and discovered an AWFUL lot of stuff sharing IRQ 9, though no conflicts are reported. IRQs 5,7,10 & 11 are unused. I'm thinking that I could allocate the AC97 audio codec to IRQ 5 and stick the G450 graphics card, Promise & Firewire controllers elsewhere and this might ease the situation, or could it be a PSU problem? How can I manually change IRQs without having to reinstall the hardware? (when I go into device manager / resources, the box to allow me to change settings is greyed out).

Hi - well I guess I've already asked the question in the title! OK, if I have SP1 installed, can I then go straight to installing SP4 without first installing SP2 and/or SP3? Or do they have to be installed in sequence? Thanks
