going to use wininstallle (free) to create MSI
chilifrei64 replied to eyeball's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4

when you say no firewall.. are all the computers connected via public ip's.. that would be an excellant reason for slow network access if there is no filtering on the router.. is the router running NAT I would check the network for viruses too. if you have an unpatched computer infected with blaster/welchia.. that will drastically slow down your network How many clients on your network Speed of network connections Hub? Switches? when does it happen.. same time every day.. when everybody goes home.. does it still happen. what is your DSL upload/download speed are you running any web/email servers off this connection Network latency can come from hundreds of different angles.. please give us as much information as you can so we can help you better

There are plenty of free software out there that can do this... for a windows solution you might want to look into squidNT.. which is basically the linux squid proxy server ported to windows.... it works pretty well and you can set different logon times and credentials.. otherwise there are an abuncance of linux distros that have an all in one proxy/av/firewall/filter.. you name it in one distro.. off the top of my head you can look into clarkconnect or smoothwall.. I am sure there are plenty others.. if you are looking for something full featured.. start to learn linux.. not too many great free windows apps for stuff like this

going to use wininstallle (free) to create MSI
chilifrei64 replied to eyeball's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
this is how winstallle works. What you need to do now is all those files should be in a network share on your server, then run the msi file from the network share. WinstallLE was not meant to create a single-all-in-one msi file but more or less a hack to allow you to deploy software with group policies. -
my guess is you are using office 2000. this was a problem with office 2000 which i have fixed by any of the following things make sure office is fully up to date with all service releases and service packs. Make sure you install service releases BEFORE you install service packs. (it did cause a few minor problems.. not many though) also this can be the result of a corrupt pst file i have posted some information on how to clean/fix pst files here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=57623

[Info] New Active Directory features
chilifrei64 replied to fizban2's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
just breifly what I saw.. just as I thought you couldnt stuff anything more into group policy configurations.. they added many more options to lock down pc's and configure pc's with group policies.. to name a few.. you dont need to be a script writer to map network drives or install printers at logon anymore. better power management group policies added group policies for removeable media -
Figured I would put in my 2 cents.. I had a problem with this a few months ago and none of the normal stuff worked.. later found that SYSTEM needs full control access to the c:\ drive and permissions on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the registey needs SYSTEM full control access
-
it is under your group policy management mmc
-
Copy the i386 folder from the cd to your local hard drive to c:\i386 open regedit and navigate to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup you will have a source path. Change the source path to C:\ Restart your computer and you will no longer need you CD
-
Computer Configuration-> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options Choose "Interactive Logon: Message text for users attempting to logon"
-
to my knowledge it shouldnt matter. I have installed exchange on multiple site multiple DC networks before and only ran domain prep on my main DC(operations master) and never ran into a problem. Active directory will replicate the schema on its own.

ATI Video Driver for Windows Server 2003?
chilifrei64 replied to Thunderbolt 2864's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
also.. as opposed to running the install. go to device manager and update the driver.. tell it that you will select the best driver. choose have disk and browse to the extracted folder.. this may work for you. -
You are most likely out of luck. I cant invision any way this can be done with out some sorta bit-torrent/P2P file sharing implementation which I would say would be too hard to manage. The best way to utilize that space is to go out and buy 21 20GB hd and replace the ones in the machine and take the 40's and stuff then into a giant raid tower. but your still talking about a silly solution for backups using 20 40 gig prolly IDE HD's for a backup Basically I guess what I am saying is you cant have centrally stored and have it on 20 different pcs, and any implementation would be too hard to manage, especially if a machine moves/dies/changes name and consolidating the hardware is not practical. it is not like you are out alot of money.. the difference between 20 and 40 giggers is about 5 bucks so really you are only out about 100 bucks.. just keep then in there and make your job easier

ATI Video Driver for Windows Server 2003?
chilifrei64 replied to Thunderbolt 2864's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
My workstation that I am typing this from is a 2k3 server and I have a Radeon 9600 and this is the driver I used. https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...ge&folderID=293 it is the windows XP driver. Also make sure that you have .NET framework 1.1 SP1 installed.. only cause ATI says so. Even though that only counts towards the control center and not the driver installation -
[Question] Remote desktop / Alternative client question
chilifrei64 replied to vasil's topic in Windows XP
The version of vnc that I use is tightVNC and when it installs it installs as a service and starts when the computer starts. maybe check out that version -
As m3n70r said You will only see this on NTFS partitions
-
does this mean you are making one or is this just a poll?
-
yeah when I installed it on 2k3 server that way it was a little buggy also.. I am writing this from IE7 on my xp box but I am having problems typing in WYSIWYG editors.. but it is a beta.. that is what we get..
-
there is not any way to do this.. you cannot have access 2003 installed on the same computer as access 2000 or access 97
-
Run IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe and it will error Browse to the temp directory at c:\ and copy the files to another location Working within' the extracted directory, delete the following: update install.ins spmsg.dll spuninst.exe spupdsvc.exe Create a blank text file within' the directory and rename it to iexplore.exe.local. Move the directory to a location in which you want to store the now standalone version of Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 (eg. My Documents). Execute iexplore.exe.

Domain topology & Exchange server thread part 2!
chilifrei64 replied to rakem's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
You should only need 1 dc for exchange to run. Now, if the DC that goes down is at the same location as the exchange server than that can cause a minor hicup. Now this also assumes that you have made all DC's(1 at each site) a Global catalog. If one goes down and there are no other global catalogs, then you will run into problems. As far as the automatically generated.. you can leave those.. it is not necessary to change those. -
shutting down explorer is hardly a reboot. you have atleast 12 other processes that would need to be shut down and restarted and a few, then when stopped, will force a reboot of the computer anyways. XP and 2000 is different from the 9x operating systems and does not allow for a "Soft Reboot"

Systems That Can Be Reached Through Terminal Server
chilifrei64 replied to chbrules's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
All you really need to do here is enable terminal services on your server 2003 box and forward port 3389 to the 2k3 box Then ensure the allow remote desktop connection on the windows xp workstations and make sure the administrator account(or the account you will be accessing it with) has a password. Doing it this way means you have to log in to the W2k3 machine remotely then from the w2k3, log into the xp clients. The desktop refresh will be slow because you are actually going through 2 machines but it is still workable depending on your speed. -
up to 400 kb downloads speed using my GPRS Cellphone
chilifrei64 replied to ideas's topic in Networks and the Internet
The cell phone broadband connections are burstable connections meaning they can spike and spike high. There is no way to maintain these connection speeds. It also matters the content that you are downloading. If the type of information it is downloading is highly compressable, this can return false speeds over these types of networks. I have seen it using my sprint phone and a couple times at one of my clients verizon broadband card, but it is not maintainable. If you want the fastest speeds consistently via wireless broadband... go verizon. I use cingular, sprint, and verizon.. verizon is faster. -
What next after installing Exchange 2003
chilifrei64 replied to Bad boy Warrior's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Exchange 2003 comes with Outlook 2003. Download the Office resource kit from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en and create a custom installation. Then you can deploy it via group policy to all machines.. if configured correctly you can have it automatically configure the users outlook profile so you wont have to.
