It is more like what Microsoft wants. Many software devs are Microsoft partners and Microsoft gives them certain support guidelines. Good example of no support is AMD zen and AMD zen+ and Zen2 that claimed Windows 7 is unsupported OS, but I have been able to run Windows 7 on Zen and Zen+ using OFFICAL AMD usb driver for Ryzen and Zen2 cpus works too if modify usb driver. Same happened on NVME drives that all sudden were never supported on Windows 7 despite there is NVME patch from MS to generic support, that disappeared from web. Then for XP was all sudden XP never support Exfat drives (offical patch disappeared from MS site), it took forever to find that patch for Finnish Windows XP, but eventually did. Then last example is being Happauge USB Tv tuners. Back in 2015 their site said supported platforms being Windows XP-Windows 10 then today site claims only supports Windows 7+. Also they got Windows Media Center edition support site that says all tuner models are supported on Windows WMC edition 2005, which is Windows XP. I emailed their support asking if it can be used since conflicting information on their current site and their response was XP had never been supported on those tuners. Well I bought one and after changing single 4 line of code at end of hwid on inf file (Version 5.2015.1030.34035) driver installed just fine and even IR remote worked under XP. So again lies. I could list million examples but you get the point. Microsoft has contract with companies and they want companies only support their platform and only ones they decide. More I wonder why everyone are fine with that MS has not gotten proper lawsuit with proper penalties from it, or why ms never got proper penalties from any consumer harm they did?

yes I know and that it is another problem. What if Blizzard would go bankrupt? Nobody would be ever be able play them again without modifying files. Same can applied most steam games. That is going to make game preservation harder on future. I guess in 20 years peoples wont be able play todays game like you can play 20 year old game since online depencies. There is some expections like starforce DRM games and secureRom games that I had issues running proper even back then, but for most parts those titles are usable on old or new HW from original disk or backup or disk. I sorta wish GOG like approach where games are DRM free and can download them to pc and install on offline as many pc as you want and can keep version you want, but sadly gog patched games many times breaks compatibility with original OS too if classic title and most of them like Doom cannot be installed to my old 486 from diskettes like my original 1994 or 1995 copy can be, I need new computer to extract and transfer over to 486 from emulator folder. I am not saying modern patched cannot be option, but also offer original one if user want We need back times when games were DRM free, were not tied any launcher expect maybe optionally could have server search client, games were supported on original platform during whole lifecycle. And addition to that I would want that games would be available on physical media that can be used fully offline and digital copies could exist too that can be downloaded for offline use with or without client, giving end user freedom to choose what he/she wants. But sadly public interest is not that since most users have no issues, putting up with DRM, 20 different game client, using latest MS os etc so will unlikely to happen

tested vlc again and seems it no longer lags for some reason. I guess 1280x1024 screen resolution was too heavy for in last test. Now got 800x600 as desktop reso and no issues playing same file I am using winamp pro, office 97, filezilla, photoshop, premiere then retrozilla for email and web and lot more I wont list here. Also got tls 1.2 patched netscape but prefer retrozilla since netscape 9 was rebranded firefox 2 (well gecko is from netscape originally). I can listen music, write emails, browse web and write docs same time no issue. Office 97 is very good software despite being old, it is more stable than office 95. Also got adobe premiere and photoshop to edit pictures/videos from my Canon Powershot G6. Imaging works using TWAIN, but TWAIN sucks real bad so I use usb CF card reader for transfer. Also that way can tranfer pics from my Nikon coolpix l29 pocket camera. Funny how 700€ digital camera from 2004 still got better image than some cameras today (3072 x 2304). I actually have maxium amount of ram 815 chipset will detect and it had fastest ram it can do already when got it. Machine was originally custom build ordered from POMI (Pohjanmaan Mikro OY) in 2001. I was used with to make 3d models to cnc and machine and possibly control it so that is why had such beefy specs (Pentium 3 EB 800mhz, Gigabyte GA-60MM7, Nvidia TNT2 M64 32mb, 512mb ram) compared other machines on facility that were mostly Pentiums with 2d video card. I got hands to it when saw it one place and asked if can have it and after they security wiped hdd,I got to keep it. I saved this powerhorse from the being recycled Later on it lifecycle I replaced 20gb hard drive with ssd, swapped it to bigger better airflow chassis, replaced cpu and gpu fans with noctua, added arctic 80mm high pressure fan to intake and 60mm noctua to back to keep it cool also added ESS Solo1 pci sound card for dos support, and replaced dying psu with new seasonic S12II-520. Then got 98lite with Micro shell for maxium performance Been investing lot of money and time to this thing, but all been worth it, I do not see this as waste of money rather investment. that is what I hate on modern gaming. Back in day when games were on disk (unless some annyoing drm) I was able run same game on original platform no issues. And I bet like others they refuse to allow download last windows 7 compatible release of game. My boxed copy of Half-life still runs on Windows 95 or windows 98 after all these years and not nagging I need Windows 11

Vuze is written in java as far as I know so if got latest java runtime for XP should work. Just make sure you latest java runtime that works on XP

older versions had no ads I think or lack of Internet Exploiter and it HTML render engine breaks them. Newer versions started to have ads as far as I know while old one was ad free. I need try on system with ie installed

Since I am one of few here who uses Windows 98 with 98lite and 95 explorer with Internet Explorer rendering removed would like to share some of my recent multimedia tests. Having no Internet Exploiter installed limits some software that can be used, but found media players and codecs that work on this configs. Vlc works but have lot of shuttering running standard quality videos, 800mhz cpu got no cycles to spare. TCPMP mod and Mplayer seems to be okayish but rather limited. Player I currently use is GOM player 2.1.33.5071 with ffdshow 2322 and Haali media splitter 1.13.138.14 and works great on dvd quality MP4 files on 800mhz cpu. It works fine without ie too, but asked if website can store data (some leftover IE comoponent likely) since autoupdate contacted server (can untoggle on settings). One thing noticed is that player can take down whole system if do too much multitasking. It is old Windows 9x flaw since os did not handle so well on low resources. NT did it better but as long as wont overload it works just fine. I know 98lited 98SE is not same as vanilla but outside explorer and removal of few components it is same thing with no kernel patches or extensions

That will break compability on image deployment using older VM or virtualbox that can be real issue on enterprise environment. Wonder if patch to bypass is made or if can force updates by manual install?

Well I expect someday to happen when all are using Windows 365 or other mostly cloud based os and central server crashes. That point peoples will be locked out from their own hardware while I still rock on my own non locked down computer. Maybe then peoples would realise point of computers. If this cloud computing goes crazier we could go back to monochrome terminal connected to Microsoft or Google mainframe. Purpose of personal computers was to get rid of single company control problem is most peoples like me wont hang lot on internet. On MSFN I originally ended only because was looking few XP patches and end up being here more if got good topic when I was young I had no phone and only had landline phone on home and later siemens phone as shared. One is using rss feeds (rather limited these days) then second is watch TV news from Yle (Public radio company) or MTV3 channels. Also few radio channels got news reguarly. Then there is Teletext (text based information service broadcasted with tv channel popular in europe) I use to check news, check some reciepes or even check weather or alerts on my area. Last one is great since work on any television or tuner that can recieve dvb-c or dvb-t signal and YLE one lacks ads. So there is ways to stay up to date on news without social media, but with more control, where and when

I wonder when we will have Windows 12 since ms promised Windows 10 to be last and did not keep promise. I warned MS does not want give away free copies of Windows without having something else on mind and win11 and it artificial requiments were it. But they did not listen since "Microsoft is my best friend and cares from me". Now lot are upset from windows 11 and it release is not hyped that much. Some pulled excuse "who does not upgrade their hardware every day in 2021" to defend ms though. When going from windows 3x to 9x and later from windows 9x and NT/2k mess (mean two different kernels to develop not OS themself) to XP it felt different because there was ACTUAL IMPROVEMENTS not some like new skin, and more spyware. Microsoft threw all effort done to ui research over time to trash in 2012 when Windows 8 came out making it feel more like touch screen and Windows 11 has not fixed it yet. Funny that they say 7th gen intel cannot run Windows 7 (it can) or run Windows 11 (it can too), so in 2025 what supported ms os those cpus will have? I do not like either because Windows is mess to manage nowadays on enteprise environment and IOS is even worse. Space is not issue to my on Windows 98. Got 128gb ssd on it using adapter (But ssd is to windows 10 and you cannot use it on 98 despite I do says normies) and with dynamic disk overlay could do larger (bios limit). Bigger issue is to find proper Media player for windows 98 that is optimised. I stripped most from is installation using 98lite professional so got only windows 95 shell, no internet explorer or anything else and takes around 50mb of space for windows folder Well Microsoft really tries to push their ms authentitator application to their users even on work. I do not want use it workspace smartphone. If phone breaks or is lost I am locked out from accessing resources. And if someone is able to access to your login screen it means they can just use hdd over live media or mount it into another computer and copy your user data. As for home all I got is my old brick nokia for phone and jailbroken nokia e90 communicator as pda and I do not want to upgrade touchscreen device just to be able use my pc. Peoples say I need get smartphone, but I see no real use to it. If I talk someone using IM or send email I prefer do it on home using desktop or on a road from my notebook and even more prefer IRLTalk with f2f (face to face) mode which seems to dying, many peoples do not want come to visit or go walk or driving or do anything else anymore. Most modern peoples cannot be without their phones even for single minute. If someone comes spend time with me they should put their phone on mute and into somewhere they wont see it alerting like I do. I really would like to say "next time you check that social media feed while you are with me I throw phone out of window", but not feeling up to it. I miss time when cellphones were mostly luxury item, smartphones were mostly for business use (Nokia communicators and palmOS devices as example) and peoples were able do fine without one. Back then I had better conversation with peoples since they were not distracted all the time. Why that is bothering me is because it is forced down peoples throat, peoples cannot live without one needing check it all the time, most of phones are wasteful items with 2 years or less lifespan and go crazy if you say bad from their phones or phone usage.

800x600 is normal for on me on 17" CRT monitor. Higher than it even 1024x768 is bit too blurry to my eyes and also I prefer higher refresh rates over higher resolutions, since lower refresh rates causes headache to me. 100hz does not flicker on me at all. On flatscreen I use higher resolutions

Well I used to have 3g connection with 20gb limit then fell to gprs speeds, definitely wont miss it and was happy to get better (more pricey) service plan. Funny how web bloat has increased. Back in day I was happy to 128kb/s connection which felt so much better than 56k and was fast even to many users. Biggest issue like I said is devs these days assumes all got same setup as they do and do not bother optimising. Site can be size of small video file JUST FOR TEXT! One site that might be useful to check weather is wttr.in. It is minimal weather site. If you block js works even faster. Here example how it looks. Just block JS and that loads blazing fast on any browser and connection. I can render that on my Nokia e90 communicator built in browser too. Also it got v2.wttr.in for detailed information and v3.wttr.in for weather map near your area. For email use it over IMAP with offline copies of messages, it saves lot of bandwidth. Despite I got 100mb/s connection at home I prefer minimise network usage so got bandwidth to things that actually needs it not to run soydev sites.

Antiviruses are obsolete these days since viruses evolves all the time. Definitions cannot keep up with them all. And most modern av sucks system resources like crazy. I use network/process monitoring and offline manual virus scanner to protection. I may need to test it, but I do not have KernelEx installed in Windows 98 system because I use 98lite with Micro shell (Windows 95 shell) and kernelex does not like it, so definitely not going affect my system Only time I had viruses was for similar reason as kid. there is no any war between "evil xp users who steal code" and "honest caring Moonchild(ish) devs" there is just Tobin with his paranoia thinking everyone are against him. Palemoon has turned into a cult that attack against anyone who even raises finger against them, question anything they do or even as simple as working to improve their code and haunt them forever. And do not get me wrong. Palemoon code itself been most part very solid and in my opinion what web browser should be, not like bloat I mean firefox is. It is also last that supports java and flash that I need use sometimes to access older network equipment or other. Many say it is bad since "uses old render engine, got security vurneabilities, does not work with Netflix, or cannot be used with online im clients to voice". There is simple reasons why voice wont work and Netflix wont either, it lacks EME DRM antifeature support and webrtc which are privacy and security risk. And for security, any browser got vurneabilities and most are related to webassembly and javascript and cannot be patched so only way protect is limit allowed javascript to minium with Nmatrix or similar. Render engine is old and slow is because HTML5 and javascript that been built around google chrome for most parts. It is done on purpose to make chromium look better. It is like Internet Exploiter back in day. If web browser was what they were just program that downloads documents from online and renders them on screen like originally intended for, only slowness reason would be bad optimisation of code on browser itself. HTML stands for The HyperText Markup Language and HTTP for HyperText Transfer Protocol and that is what it purpose was originally. I am not saying there cannot be pictures or media, but Media and anything else should be handled by standardised plugins and used only if absolutely neccessary. That way anyone could do a browser themself and we would have real competition. But big companies abuses web standards and do not want competition. For long time I though was last person on earth who did not want get "latest and (not) greatest" Windows and wanted choice of OS to be thing. FF52 started suck real bad on many sites I needed use daily wanted or not, then stumbled this board and projects done here and was able to use OS I wanted better than ever before and share my knowledge with others who may need it. I really hope I am wrong but likely this will break stuff on me since I use gnupg to pgp encrypt and sign my emails under XP. If they do not care xp related issue may mean plan and drop xp support "in benefit of user" and if gnupg drops support no more pgp on xp. I need test upgrade it and see if anything else broke related encryption or signing.

So I am not only who prefer to have slower system for main Windows 98 setup. My 800mhz Pentium 3 EB with tnt2 is my main choice to 98 over Pentium 4 system that I use to xp for most of times. Maybe I just like Pentium 3 one more. I also got presario 5000 with 820mhz celeron cpu as backup. only time I got virus on Windows 98 was from old infected cd with cih aka spacefiller virus. Luckily 815 chipset is not compatible with it bios erasure payload so only had to recover hdd. Now I scan files with Clamwin before copying anything off my old cd disks. Also few years ago I did go and indeed test claim if you use Windows 98 today you will get infected easily. To test I downloaded lot of malware, adware, worm and spyware samples starting around 2006-2018 or so. I did test on real hardware too. Most of them did not even execute under Windows 98, some had illegal process, some crashed virtual memory manager and funniest were that said "This program requires newer version of Windows" so obsolence can be security too. Some did run but all were removable using clamwin or spybot s&d and consider I had to SEARCH to find samples of newer malware that run under Windows 98 for long time. If I cannot find them intentionally lot wont likely get them in to their machines either

Sounds similar to my old thinkcentre with 945 chipset. It first had random reboot when inserted or removed usb drive, then boot started take long and eventually system died. It had no bulging caps and I assume caps next to ram died since when try boot using igp get memory failure on good modules and gpu failure when use deciated gpu

Some sites uses js that makes browser explode on 32bit. I have had similar issues on some sites recently. For example adding item to cart on certain stores makes browser lag like crazy. I usually block js but some sites for example stores need lot of js to even basic function. I have contacted them about site having too much js and they say "upgrade your hardware" as response. And many times site I am talking would not even need js to work if were coded properly. More like they assume everyone got 1gb/s fiber connection. Before sites used to have basic version to older browsers and modem users, then they were crippled off with bloated sites. 10mb worth scripts and other useless stuff in top of images and others may not be issue to many, but not all got high speed internet. Some areas I worked on got slow DSL and you are lucky even to have internet in cell network on that area and having bloated site as only option really makes life harder.
