  1. I do not think that uninstalling with an uninstaller would be that necessary. Once you have installed the driver place the extracted files in a different directory to trick the operating system. Then when you want to change drivers install a standard graphics driver first then reboot then update driver to what driver you want by selecting 'specify the location of the driver advanced' like you will need to do to install the standard driver then select 'display a list of all drivers' then select the driver you want. Because the OS does not know where the installation files are you have to specify and you should be prompted to overwrite the file versions or not in which case you do. It can be a fair few clicks to install but at least you know that it is installed correctly. Perhaps the shifting of the directory is unnecessary either but have the inf in that directory as well as the INF directory as the inf file will be asked for first after it is found in the INF folder and it has to be the right one. Have you tied unofficial drivers 82.69 as an all-rounder I have had no issues with it and have used Ti 4200.
  2. Just pressing the PrintScreen button places a desktop screen shot in ClipBoard in RAM. There is no need for any other buttons pressed in most keyboards. You then open an image editor like PhotoFiltre and right clock paste as new image or sometimes it is in the drop down menu > Import > Screen Capture. The clipboard can be viewed in WinME by running ClipBrd.exe in the WinDir. LICEcap 1.28 - (2017) is a desktop recorder and can be moved around when recording from https://www.cockos.com/licecap/ free. It does not need KEX and older versions are available. There are other screen capture software but I have been using ACE WINscreen available https://ace-winscreen.soft32.com/free-download/?nc&dm=2 needs a KernelEx basic setting for an active X load? I am not sure if it needed it originally though (2007) it might be I have to set the active X module to a KernelEx setting (It should be set as I have registered all OCX files) but at the moment KEX24 overrides child modules when disabled and I might be using a different OCX version to that back in the day. Caltrox says it is 98 compatible. WINscreen selects a portion of the screen with mouse drag selection. The system tray menu controls do not work for me but it has a GUI which does work. Caltroxsoft.com web site does not seem to be behaving as it should so it is probably best to get it through soft32 as it is correct.
  3. I do not know why the printers do not show but perhaps in Device Manager uninstall them if they are there then reinstall them or at least unplug them and plug them back in after a reboot. If that does not work make sure there are no USB problems. I say this because my USB TV card was getting too hot and actually caused USB problems where the mouse would not move smoothly. I removed the TV card's shell and placed copper heat-sinks on the chips then placed a larger heat-sink across the 2 copper ones. The larger heat-sink was necessary because the TV card was still failing and now is reliable. I use TV for hours continuously. Perhaps unplug all USB devices except mouse and keyboard and update the USB controller device in device Manager then restart machine. Cable Mouse/keyboard devices can short out due to wire failure after prolonged use. Make sure the local network is private. If it is then the firewall may need adjusting. In saying this if your install was logged in to a Microsoft account at first then there are big sharing problems. I say this because I cannot connect to any other machines shares except Win7's. The other Win10 machine I have running was not logged into a Microsoft account when installing will not connect to the NAS drive even though it sees it. You have to be scrupulous and turn on sharing in All Networks and Guest or Public sections of advanced sharing settings. I do not have printers directly connected to Win10 or 7 but use a Network USB server which has 4 USB ports, it works good but only one machine can be connected to the printer at one time so you have to disconnect from one machine so that another machine can connect. Drivers are not available for WinME for which I have a dedicated printer.
  4. No need to do any more work on reporting IMO, XP and 98 drivers are too different and have non shared version numbers. Try Unofficial SP for Win98 the registration settings of and different APIs make a difference. Make sure there are no cross linking of resources. The first picture shows a poor installation and is what a restricted PCI bus can do causing Motherboard Resources as a device being reported. The SCSI card I am fairly sure is stopping full buss width access. (an input line is not toggling) but the poor install is also due to previous Motherboard installation settings being still there. This latter situation would not be applicable in your case but the motherboard resources issue could be. The second is a better install of the same hardware note that the first shows many undetermined resource allocations where the better install has very few undetermined. If the undetermined resources are associated with the AGP port then this could affect benchmark outcomes.
  5. Some testers test a small area of the drive and all they can end up doing is testing the drive's cache speed. Sustained speed is the test. DriveSpeed32 seems to read consecutive cylinders so it seems to be a continuous sustained speed test. Those figures are good AFAIK. There is no INF or VXDs that I can see installed by iaa23. It is applicable for Intel chips 440BX to G31. Intel accelerator 2.2 was known to stop a nVidia card from working. If you take HDD off VIA and install on Intel then iaa23 will install and then swap back to VIA. This is PDF for 2.2 http://tetraedre.ch/public_download/opencv/opencv_tutorial.pdf. 2.3 made my system speed up but might have just been the hard drive accessing. This is for vs 6 https://jp.xlsoft.com/documents/intel/ipp/lin61/ippnotes.pdf . Is this a new phenomenon? If so then installing the old drivers through the device manager will not over-write the new files if they have the same name but if there is a prompt and you are writing over the later file versions then OK. The reason for not being able to install older versions is because of the registry settings.
  6. Browsers should keep up to date but see here and next few posts. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181784-streaming-downloading-youtube-videos-in-2020/?do=findComment&comment=1187998.
  7. Yes sounds like VIA GART driver is not installed. It is in the 4 in 1 drivers. I think I have found where to download the Intel accelerator driver here https://download.cnet.com/Intel-Application-Accelerator/3000-2086_4-10163577.html It was still supplied in a G31 motherboard install disc in 2008. Executable name starts with iaa23. I found VIA drivers on VIA web site. 4 in 1 should be here directly https://d34vhvz8ul1ifj.cloudfront.net/Driver/VIA_HyperionPro_V524A.zip
  8. I It is best to keep a copy of registry prior to any 3rd party video drivers are install when experimenting. It appears that the old versions are not over-writing the newer versions of libraries and control panel. This is normal even up to this day. You have to manually remove all files before going back in driver version. https://msfn.org/board/topic/178240-winxpz170z370-mb-google-chrome-firefox-opera-dont-respond-on-user-actions-games-microfreezes/?do=findComment&comment=1174797 - first paragraph. I removed about 3000 ATI registry settings manually early on when ATI no longer installed correctly. It then installed.
  9. Yes only because MSVCRT is MSVCR70 but you wanted to know why MSVCR70 was loaded. The registry has first priority as it is loaded very early and of which you have said with the registry - every time MSVCRT is to be loaded, do not do that, load MSVCR70 instead. I have KernelEx loaded with every program and from what registry settings you are using MSVCR80 will take the place of MSVCRT when ever KernelEx is loaded. Use Process Explorer to see what libraries are loaded with each program. Perhaps you have Explorer.exe set KernelEx disabled, but with default as BASE KernelEx is loaded. I tried the sub directory idea for UNICOWS.dll as a knowndll of KernelEx. Interesting:- I get an error at runtime. Error is Rundll32 has caused an error in KEXBASEN Rundll32 will now close. The per-profile redirection can you explain this? KexStubs is for stubbing but can a program be had that functions can be redirected to other libraries that have that function for use with KernelEx?
  10. Perhaps you have MSVCRT = MSVCR70.DLL in KnownDLLs set in registry.
  11. I do remember installing Dotnet Framework 2.0 having an effect on video. On one ME machine it stopped Glory of the Roman Empire but this was way back in the very early days with not so good hardware. It did seem to accelerate everything and so did Intel(R) Integrated Performance Primitives RTI4.0. It does not matter if you then go to an AMD machine RTI4.0 does not hurt an AMD build. I can not locate the actual file at the moment but it was installed before Framework 2.0 was introduced and gives a good speed improvement.
  12. I sort of made my point but there may be parts of my other posts that may interest you. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181107-windows-98se-and-nforce-2-change-chipset/?do=findComment&comment=1177938 and this topic https://msfn.org/board/topic/181380-question-on-what-to-update-w98-with/?do=findComment&comment=1183509
  13. That is good, WinME had all ports closed too and I assume 98 has well but it is best to check and I used GRC.com too. They have a lot of information about security as well, presented in entertaining talk sessions. The certificate first time certification or after the signings have changed may take a long time as emails and other pages updating will contribute to the slowness but anyway it will take minutes to clear, if on dial-up give it many minutes. In fact forget about that page and surf a different web address in a new tab, that's what I did, but not too many pages can be open at once for you will run out of RAM. I have not told told Opera to ignore the certificate error. My Mozilla browsers work best here as I get full width on my newer ME builds with the default profile view setting but when I go to post, the drop down does not happen but does for pictures but no text, for example, if I go to edit a post with a picture the picture appears in the drop down but no text. I think it is a registry setting that's not there or not correct.
  14. It can also be in the root directory - win386.swp
  15. It could be the MBs have a fault that was brought on by a common video card that was not working properly. Power is regulated to many different parts of the MB via the circuitry for example the AGP voltage is 0.8 volts for vs 3.0. An easy check of a single core x64 CPU is as explained. 77.72 is the better driver over the 81.98 as PCI 6200 nVidia cards work with it.
  16. XP has the added bonus of 32bit driver system with the ability to use 16bit so that hardware problems can be routed around. This is my take on the situation and might be wrong. Typical example is the card that will not load drivers in 98 but does in XP. It is a shame but if all mother boards have been used with the same card then they all could be suffering the same infliction. Once again my take. At the same token I do not use 98 but use ME and OS native VXDs are not compatible. If you try a 64bit VISTA for example and see if it will install this tests your hardware better. For example CPU faults can not be there otherwise 32bit can only install though will most likely occur with single core products.
  17. It looks like Opera has been compromised. It can happen if you download old drivers or the like that turns out to be fake or has malware and you open it. Also the web sites have became more complex and downloading to check certification can take longer the first time so you do not want to click on accepting any and what should happen Opera will eventually clear certification. It can bring up the red notification though in the interim of the checking process. You also need to restart your machine to get the Opera error correction implemented from a crash and you need to start without that page/tab that caused the problem. Having just a modem has no port blocking and leaves your computer vulnerable if any port can be opened. I needed Port Blocker software on Win2K professional as it was designed to be a corporate server and most ports were open. There were huge IP addresses wanting to access. If you can borrow a friends Win10 machine you can connect both locally via a switch will do off-line then you can make your complete Win98 C: drive shareable and navigate throughout the 98 machine from the Win10 machine, it will pick up on malware. Win10 must have Windows security enabled and running. It is more difficult though to get shares going on a local area network with Win10 especially when the OS was setup a to a Windows account at first. My best success Win10 share linking is from Win10 to Win 7 but not Win10 to Win10. Media share is easy though. Registry browser add-ons will need to be checked and this can be accessed by software on the Win98 machine. You cannot be locked out of parts of the registry from malware with Win98 which is good. It might just be in your Opera profile that the malware is located and deleting Opera profile could fix this. Opera needs the TLS1.2 enabled manually, it has turbo settings and add blocker but from what you have explained - it should not happen. Being on dial-up an ISA modem is better than the newer PCI cards in that the software did not check for line speed on dialing in. They can go a lot faster than the exchange allowed and our exchange cut speeds to half if the speed limit was exceeded. Getting drivers for them can be impossible though, they are not all out there. I emphasize with you and others who need to use dial-up. I had return to it as a backup and had it running on Vista. It was terribly slow so I gave up and cancelled the account about 8 years ago.
  18. The rambling can be deleted out. The main part of your thread is the very early posts which can be edited if need be. I can make the claims with concrete examples with pictures etcetera for you but where would you like it posted? EDIT I have decided to create my own topic. The DXVA2 will be commented elsewhere.
  19. Sorry browser needed refreshing I edited last post. What difference does it make though if it worked on a KernelEx24 system with not much room for maneuvering as WMP6 only works and besides it does not need the adjustment now. It doesn't make any difference if you have a lot of leeway like a KernelEx9 system that has not as much registry settings. I am talking about my systems and I only said what happened because Schwups was keen to get it solved.
  20. There is a possibility of a NorthBridge problem. If you have a processor that operates on a lower FSB speed like a Celeron which works on 533 then this is also worth trying. Also try setting BIOS settings low to try and get the chip working properly. I had a temporary heat sink on the reverse side chip of an ATI 4670 1G card but I forgot to plug the fan for the temporary heat sink in or it was not spinning. The reverse side chip became very hot and frame rate halved. I shut the machine down but it may not have been the best decision as the frame rate was bouncing back up to proper speed and halving. I was an Intel processor board with VIA 900 chipset. The AGP never recovered again no matter how hard I tried always halve the proper speed no matter what card was chosen. The game - FIFA10 frame rate - locked to sync which was 50hz fairly sure : - halved to 25. Could have been 60 to 30 though and OS was Vista. What happen after the event is the processor got a lot hotter than it should which indicates that some of its outputs were not toggling.
  21. It could be due to the video card, try a different card perhaps an ATI card but be aware of ATI2CQAG.dl_ https://msfn.org/board/topic/179556-looking-for-ati-xpert-128-gl-pci-biosrom-for-pc/?do=findComment&comment=1180280 Try your cards in a modern OS and see how they perform but be aware of this https://msfn.org/board/topic/175188-ati-widescreen-support-for-win9x/?do=findComment&comment=1157246 and https://msfn.org/board/topic/178240-winxpz170z370-mb-google-chrome-firefox-opera-dont-respond-on-user-actions-games-microfreezes/?do=findComment&comment=1174797 You are finding out that the AGP port has ample throughput for the very best of cards. The nVidia can be getting better. Schwups did not say what bench was used I think it would be 3Dmark01 but it would be good to clarify that. My 3dmark03 bench results https://msfn.org/board/topic/178283-how-you-really-browse-the-web-on-98me-in-2019/?do=findComment&comment=1168646. Some comments are out of date Cstore may have been coincidental. It is extraordinarily difficult to get a good video card. When you boot up with nVidia the blinking cursor flashes twice as fast as that of an ATI card. If you intend to try some games then Glory of the Roman Empire will probably not show shadows correctly with nVidia but this is just the card not fully functioning. I have it fully functioning with Quadro 3000 - FX5900 Ultra it was not at first though. Best to read this I guess, I had no Fraps. https://msfn.org/board/topic/178142-screen-icons-refresh-when-opening-explorer-browsing-drive/?do=findComment&comment=1159233 The icons refreshing is the RAM address re-assignment I think - It will happen on Win10 as well if RAM is not 100%. If hardware share the same chip then they can affect each other by momentarily dipping the supply voltage to that chip for example. If your operating system does refresh the video when required then it is healthy. I found this from my WinME experience. A good game to help nVidia I found is the Settlers 5 Heritage of Kings.
  22. It worked on one build of mine, every little bit helps. I went back to an even earlier build and installed KernelEx 9 with Basen 8 registered 3DYD source with source_filter and LibCurl set as NT2K. Then installed defaults of LAV filters 70.2.16 and it streamed on WMP6. I then registered a 74.1.9 XP LAV install and it worked. I then installed MPC-HC 1.5.1.2903 and it streamed as well. I did not do the CryptStringToBinaryW alteration as I am using the suggestion about the files on previous page. It must be the configuration in the registry that caused later builds of mine to not work. I can stream 1080p VP9 25 FPS KernelEx24 WMP6 at 70% CPU usage. 3DYD source loses registration if I register other files though. There is something not right there. I will comment about Dxva2 later.
  23. Very basically the root certificates are a reference on the certificate signing authority site, the secure web site you are communicating and the client machine - you, so that the secure web site communications can be checked for genuinity. Otherwise you may have to force your browser to proceed or not. The root certificates should be kept up to date. It should work for other OS's that can use Microsoft Serialized Certificate Store - SST files. I know 2K and XP does and because the links to download them are not OS specific I assume the others do too. There is a difference between registry vs 4 and vs 5 though where long values more than 2048 bytes must be stored as files with the file names stored in the registry. I get an overflow in my icon cache to the Windows folder named ShellIconCache - keep an eye out, when it approaches 16kB then a boot into safe mode is required to reset it. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/256986/windows-registry-information-for-advanced-users
  24. What happens when you right click the root directory folders to get their properties? It should show their size and size on disk you should be able to narrow it down from there. Select all root directory folders properties and see if it correlates to close to 2GB or not.
  25. The anti-viruses name? Search on internet on how to remove it. It can really muck up a good system, their engine files are possibly unviewable. Your comments suggest it has partially installed. What I would do is take the HDD off line to try and fix it. First remove all data sources and reset the BIOS taking note of any non default settings and of course all power removed. I would also make the partition inactive first. Go to another OS or KernelEx machine and use WinMerge to copy the swap file across to a newly partitioned drive that has been formatted by Win95. The swap file is in the Windows directory. The rest of the files will be able to be copied across normally from a Win9x machine. The new drive once all files copied across, physically set it up to replicate the original. In Fdisk from a start disk make the partition active and from start disk command prompt go to the Command folder from within the Windows install folder and type sys c: then return which writes the Win95 operating system engine which makes the partition bootable. There is no need to go to the command folder if you have installed to the standard directory - Windows. To gain your original drive back as bootable just mark partition active again.
