  1. This bug occurred last year with PepperFlash, and an Adobe employee recognized it as such, a "bug". XP/Vista: Flash PPAPI plugin 23.0.0.162 doesn't work in Opera and Chromium
  2. I could appreciate your desire for the vintage "real thing". In my experience, it's been nice using the virtual machines. Being able to install and run Windows 95/98 and NT4.0/2000/XP/7 all on the same machine is very convenient. The performance is also very good, as my system has an SSD.
  3. The Prescott would be the better choice due to the better specs you mentioned. Also, a board that supports Prescott 775 would support DDR2, giving you more and faster memory to work with. However, in this day and age, you would probably want at LEAST a dual-core processor for moderately fast performance. Once you have a modern browser and antivirus running, your CPU will be maxing out at 100%. Once you have 2000 installed with all the updates (10+ years) and a modern browser, you'll notice deficiencies in performance with only a single-core processor. Technology and software has changed quite a bit from 2001-2005, the years that the Prescott/Northwood was produced as a mainstream processor. I'm running 2000 inside Virtual PC with a quad-core processor, and I have allocated 2GB RAM. If you follow the instructions in this thread, you can run Firefox 48 on Windows 2000, even though Firefox 12 is the last "official" version:
  4. Something that has always worked for me is, get the drivers from Windows Update: Before formatting your machine, download the XP wireless driver specific to that model. Some come with Intel, others come with Atheros, depending on system configuration. If your machine wasn't built with XP in mind, you may have to go directly to the Intel or Atheros website to get the XP drivers. For example, even though my machine is a "HP 15", it is actually a X7T78UA (15-BA009DX). There are many models of "HP 15". Also, my machine came with Windows 10, but I installed an SSD and then installed Windows 7, by using other sources such as AMD to obtain the Windows 7 drivers.. Once you have installed XP, install the wireless driver. Then, install the Windows Update Agent 3.0, Internet Explorer 8, and a recent version of the Root Certificates. These files will allow you to access Windows Update. On the Windows Update homepage, choosing "Custom" will allow Windows Update to search for available device drivers. The Express option will only search for high-priority updates, not device drivers.
  5. Just an update, I decided to post the issue in the Adobe forums, because I'd like to see the issue fixed before the final release is shipped. Once the final release is shipped, it could be much more difficult to get Adobe to fix it! "Couldn't Load Plugin": New Beta 26.0.0.89 PPAPI does not work in Chrome, Windows XP
  6. The next release of Flash Player 26.x.x.xxx will be Patch Tuesday, which is May 9. I will then test if the compatibility issue existing in the beta was fixed. If not I will open a bug report with Adobe.
  7. I have confirmed that removing the beta 26.0.0.89 pepflashplayer.dl and replacing it with ANY previous version (such as the original 21.0.0.213 that Chrome 49.0.2623.112 m shipped with in April 2016), restores Flash functionality to Chrome. I suspect that this is a temporary beta bug that will be resolved in the final release. Windows XP is a supported operating system for Adobe Flash Player 26, and Adobe has not announced plans to drop it: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/tech-specs.html
  8. Preliminary testing seems to indicate an issue with the PepperFlash beta, it may be fixed in the final non-beta release. The IE and Firefox plugins work fine, even on Windows 2000.
  9. Until a solution is found, in the meantime, I would recommend using the web-based version of DropBox (https://www.dropbox.com/login), which works perfectly even on Windows 2000 and Firefox ESR 45.8.0:
  10. "I'm gonna look into each revision of DOS 0.74 to see which is the last version known to work under Windows 95 sometime tomorrow." According to SourceForge, there is only "one revision" of DosBox 0.74: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/files/dosbox/ I have Internet Explorer 5.0 installed without Active Desktop, and it wants Windows Sockets 2.0 (WS2_32.DLL) available here: http://sdfox7.com/win95/WS2SETUP.EXE After installing Windows Sockets 2.0, it then complains about SHGetSpecialFolderPathA, a function requiring Active Desktop. Without Active Desktop Installed, DOSBox 0.65 (http://sdfox7.com/win95/DOSBox0.65-win32-installer.exe) is the final version that runs on Windows 95, unless there is a bypass I am unaware of.
  11. Would have to try each version, likely beginning with the oldest. I will look into it but they are also available here if you want to look: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/files/dosbox/
  12. I always stuck with IntelliPoint 2.0 from October 1996 due to its compatibility with the even older NT 3.5x. http://sdfox7.com/nt40/INTELL20.ZIP I also have version 3.1: http://sdfox7.com/nt40/INTELL31.EXE LightSpeed was a person that maintained a Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 website for many years, last seen in July 2008. http://web.archive.org/web/20080730090550/http://oldfiles.org.uk/lightspeed/main.html and http://web.archive.org/web/20080730090545/http://oldfiles.org.uk/lightspeed/lightspeed95.html. I am not sure what happened to him or her, and it is a shame because it is clear they put a lot of time into their pages. Anyway, the Windows 95 page s/he created noted WinRAR 3.71 as the last supported version for Windows 95. http://web.archive.org/web/20080730090545/http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm Unfortunately the archive link doesn't work because the pages uses a ROBOTS.TXT, but I have always maintained it in my /win95 directory, along with an older 2.06 version: http://sdfox7.com/win95/WRAR371.EXE Regarding the latest version of WinRAR for Windows 95, WinRAR 3.80 appears to be the last version that installs completely and successfully. Later versions fail. InitializeCriticalSectionAndSpinCount is not a valid function in Windows 95. This behavior occurs in all version of WinRAR 3.93, 3.92, 3.91, 3.90, and 3.80. However, 3.80 is the only version that continues installing successfully after throwing up the error. Even more strange, while this function is supposedly not supported in Windows 95, the error does not appear once VMWare Tools and Internet Explorer 5.0 RTM is installed under VMWare. I installed both at the same time, so I'm not sure which one suppressed the function from appearing.
  13. Just wanted to post an update, I fired up my Windows 98SE virtual machine and discovered that AOL 7.0 no longer connects. Not sure when this happened exactly, but this means that AOL is officially dead on Windows 95, since AOL 7.0 was the final version that was made for 95. AOL 7.0 was released in 2001, so it was a good run for the last 15 years! AOL 9.0VR, the final version made for Windows 98SE, does still work. With AOL being purchased by Verizon last year, who knows how long until they pull the cord. It could be a while since AOL 9.0VR also supports 2000/XP/Vista.
  14. In my post, I was referring to 32-bit desktop operating systems, i.e. 2000 Professional and XP Professional. Your average user is not going to be using a server OS, nor will they have paid $999 for just the Standard Edition of the OS. I would also note that 2000/XP are similar enough in system requirements. Server 2003 has higher minimum requirements than 2000/XP. Finally, if you run Server 2003 64-bit, you will find much less software support than 2000/XP.
  15. WinRAR 5.50 beta 1, released 4/13/2017. Still working even though the changelog notes that XP SP3 is the minimum "supported" version. Just goes to show that "officially supported" and "won't work" are not synonymous.
  16. Good point. According to the changelog, WinRAR 5.40 dropped "support" for XP without SP3. The changelog indicates "support" dropped for XP <SP2, but I just found that it still works even on Windows 2000. Surely it would work on XP SP2; 2000 SP4 and XP SP2 are very similar OS's.
  17. Latest WinRAR 5.50 beta working under XP, released yesterday April 14. Silverlight 5.1.50906.0 also released this week on April 11.
  18. My preferred method for installing Windows 2000 is as follows, in the order I have below: Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (https://web.archive.org/web/20051022095019/http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/6/a/e6a04295-d2a8-40d0-a0c5-241bfecd095e/w2ksp4_en.exe) Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Security Rollup Package (SRP) (https://web.archive.org/web/20060320020710/http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/b/27b1d1a3-0299-4336-b88a-22b9f09817e2/Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE) Install UURollup (I'm using v11 from 11/30/2014) (https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bw_nt4aAJIoPMERXRHRXWE80UDA&export=download) With these all installed, even the latest Adobe Flash Player 25 (25.0.0.148 released this week) will work on Windows 2000, even though "official support" was dropped with Adobe Flash Player 12.
  19. This thread is a little over two months, but I have recently starting using virtual machines of the Win9x / NT3.x / NT4.x / 2000 OS's under my Windows 7 Ultimate. It allows installing the legacy OS without needing drivers; the guest OS utilizes the host OS's drivers through integration. NT 4.0 can still be a hoot to use these days if you want a semi-modern experience! However, the included Internet Explorer 1.0 is useless. You can open Google, but clicking any link in the results causes the browser to get stuck, it never redirects successfully, and has been this way for several years. I had to mount the Win95 OSR2 ISO, then extract Internet Explorer 3.02 and install it under NT 4.0. I could then download Firefox 1.5.0.12 (Firefox 2.0.0.20 also works). To actually run Firefox you need the 50COMUPD.EXE and SPEU.EXE updates.
  20. Stable Flash Player version 25.0.0.148 has been released (Patch Tuesday). Surprisingly it is 25.0.0.148, not the 25.0.0.152 as in the beta version. Internet Explorer: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/25.0.0.148/install_flash_player_ax.exe Firefox: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/25.0.0.148/install_flash_player.exe Chrome: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/25.0.0.148/install_flash_player_ppapi.exe
  21. Where there is a will, there is a way. I like using the old OS'es, but I have found Virtual PC to be much more practical than keeping old hardware around for running old software. You can have a (seemingly) unlimited number of VM's, as much space as your host machine's drive can hold. My host machine is a quad-core HP laptop with an SSD. Installing and running Windows (version insert here) under VPC is extremely fast since it uses the host OS hardware. It also uses the host OS drivers, no need to muck around finding drivers as with a standard OS installation.
  22. You can find Attribute Changer 5.30 here (I would scan the file to ensure it is not a virus): http://www.eqcity.com/software/right.htm Direct download: http://www.eqcity.com/software/right/attribute-changer/ac530.exe Norton SystemWorks 2001 ("try before you buy"): https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20010331023412/http://software.symantec.com:80/dr/v2/ec_dynamic.main?cat_id=7&pn=16&sid=27674 That link only gives you the name of the file, 9xME30.exe. You can get the actual file here, again I would scan the file to ensure it is not a virus: ftp://ftp.twin-net.com.br/antivirus/9xME30.exe
  23. Skype for the Web works fine on Windows 2000, I just tested it. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with Windows 2000 Professional in Windows Virtual PC. To get Skype working in the browser, you should use Firefox 48.0.2. I haven't yet figured out the issue that keeps Firefox 49 from running on Windows 2000. In order to run Firefox 48, you'll need Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Security Rollup, and the UURollup v11 from November 30, 2014. Then use the FirefoxPortable 48 installer: http://sdfox7.com/2000/Important_EOL_Updates/FirefoxPortable_48.0.2_English.paf.exe If you install all of these updates, you'll also be able to run the current version of Adobe Flash Player on Windows 2000.
  24. Flash Player Beta 25.0.0.152 is running well on my Win7 Ultimate host + XP Mode. I'll expect the final release this Tuesday, which is traditionally Patch Tuesday. http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashruntimes/flashplayer/
  25. I haven't tested it yet, but I would assume the web-based (browser-based) version would work with Firefox 48 under Windows 2000. I have not had an opportunity to test it. https://web.skype.com According to this April 2016 article, a plug in is no longer required to use the web-based version.
