  1. My partner and I just built an Alder Lake system. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 with the Extended Kernel and it works great! There is absolutely no drift-like behavior as seen on Haswell (4th gen) thru Tiger Lake (11th gen). Here's a screenshot:

    EIg7mub.png

Just like Windows 7, the processor cores do not show up in Device Manager, however it is recognized in System Properties. Ethernet drivers are also currently unavailable, however since I am friends with win32 and speak to him on a regular basis, I asked him if he could possibly get the ethernet drivers working. He said he would have to add functions to NDIS & ntoskrnl, but he could do it at a later time. Right now, I use USB wifi which works fine but I could just install a Vista-compatible PCI ethernet card if I wanted to.

    Specs:

    Asrock Z690 PG Riptide Motherboard

    Intel Core i7 12700KF

    32 GB RAM

    NVIDIA GeForce 980ti GPU w/modded 398.11 drivers by win32

    Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD

    Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64

I may try UEFI at a later date with UEFIseven, but for the time being I am using Legacy boot with no problems. Windows Vista/7 also do not properly turbo the P & E Cores, however enabling High Performance in the BIOS simply makes the cores turbo up constantly so it runs great with no performance issues. I dualboot with Windows Server 2012, which does turbo the cores properly (and has drivers for everything, including ethernet).

Which makes me seriously ponder just how informative or useful a thread like this is.

If you weren't reading a week at a time in 2016 when the thread started, just how many people are going to read 76 pages before posting?

Aren't these types of threads intended more for the person that was here in 2016 and monitored it ever since?

And not for anybody that stumbles upon it only to be asked to read just under SEVEN YEARS of posts before they get slapped in the face with a "already listed"?  :buehehe:

I am still working on editing the list and keeping it up to date. While Windows Vista Extended Kernel has made the list somewhat obsolete, not everyone wants to or can use the extended kernel (namely x86 users). I just haven’t been able to keep up with it lately due to things happening in my personal life, but I’m going to try to resume working on it soon.

Unless you have contributions of your own, you can keep your disrespectful comments to yourself  I’ve poured a lot of blood, sweat & tears into this list since 2016, and I think it’s one of the best resources for Windows Vista users today.

To anyone who wants to know if an application is already listed, press Ctrl+F in your browser and search for the application name.

  3. Sorry all for the brief hiatus from continuing the work on the list. I've been swamped at work lately (Christmas time - which means hundreds of packages to deliver every day ) I will try my best to work on the list when possible this month, but I probably won't be able to do much until January when "peak season" (as we refer to it at the USPS) is over. Thank you all for understanding, and Happy Holidays, everyone! :)

  4. Video & Photo Editing software section is finished now. Unfortunately, Vista has lost a lot of options in this section over the past couple of years :(

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR OCTOBER 9, 2022:

    • Added UNS status to Aniview since it's no longer officially supported on Vista, but works with a workaround (tutorial coming soon!)
    • Added UNS status to AnnyStudio JPEG Lossess Rotator since v9.2 is the last official version for Vista according to the website, but the latest version (v10.1 as of Oct. 2022) works just fine for me in Vista.
    • Added UNS status to AnnyStudio Just Color Picker, as Vista is not listed as a supported platform on the website, but the latest version still works fine (v5.6 as of Oct. 2022).
    • Removed ONG status from ArtWeaver Free & Pro 6.x.
    • Added ArtWeaver Free & Pro 6.0.13 as last version for Windows Vista.

    • Removed ONG status from Pinta; added Pinta 1.7.1 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed ONG status from XnConvert, XnRetro, XnSketch, & XnView MP.

    • Fixed broken download links for Image Composite Editor 2.0.3 (32 bit & 64 bit).
  5. Word Processing & Office Suites + Content Consumption Software sections are now updated :)

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR OCTOBER 8, 2022:

    • Removed ONG status from Scribus; added Scribus 1.4.8 as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed Todoist as the software no longer supports Vista and older versions no longer connect to the Todoist service.
    • Removed ONG status from AIMP; added AIMP 5.00.2344 as last version for Windows Vista.

Remove Winamp from the list, as version 5.9 requires Windows 7 as the minimum OS.

The last version of Winamp for Windows Vista has already been listed. However, I added a download link for convenience ;):

True, but if anyone feels that their vintage Vista system is incomplete without Flash Player, there’s a thread in the Windows XP forum:

The last official version without a time bomb was reportedly 32.0.0.371.

Thank you for the information! :) Added to the list:

  7. Work on Email Clients and PDF Viewers sections is now complete! Thankfully, most entries still have ongoing support for Vista, so not too much was lost this go around

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR OCTOBER 6, 2022:

    • Removed ONG status for Claws Mail; added Claws Mail 3.16.0 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Added UNS status for Pegasus Mail, since the official website claims that only Windows 7 or later are supported, but it continues to work on Vista, fortunately.
    • Removed Open Live Writer from the list, as the latest version does not work for me on Vista, throwing an APPCRASH error upon attempting to launch. I tested the software on build 6002 as well to insure it wasn't broken with build 6003, and the error occurs there as well. The software appears to be abandoned anyway (no updates since 2017).
    • Removed ONG status from Foxit PDF Reader & Foxit PhantomPDF; added Foxit PDF Reader & PhantomPDF v9.2.0.9297 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed ONG status from Nitro PDF Reader/PDF Reader Pro; added Nitro PDF Reader v10.x as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed ONG status from PDF-XChange Editor; added PDF-XChange Editor v7.0.328.2 as the last version for Windows Vista.
  8. The Web Browser plugins & Instant Messaging sections have been redone. Unfortunately, lots of IM softwares no longer support Windows Vista :( but at least most of the last versions were able to be found and listed:

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR OCTOBER 5, 2022:

    • Removed ONG status from Adfender; added Adfender v2.55 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed Adobe Flash Player & Adobe Shockwave Player as both have been discontinued and are no longer supported by Adobe.
    • Amended information regarding Java SE 8: support has been extended to December 2030 from December 2020 (security updates only), according to this roadmap by Oracle.
    • Renamed "McAfee 2015 product suite" entry to McAfee 14.0 R1 as last version for Windows Vista (according to this article).
    • Removed Dingtalk as it no longer works on Windows Vista and no older versions are available from what I can find, unfortunately.
    • Added information about ICQ: must use "Windows XP" installer, Windows 7 or later version doesn't work.
    • Removed ONG status from Linphone; added Linphone v4.1.1 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed ONG status from Mumble; added Mumble 1.3.4 as last version for Windows Vista.

    • Removed ONG status from qTox; added qTox 1.16.3 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Fixed broken download link for Viber 6.8.2.878.
    • Added UNS status to Ripcord, since it's not officially supported on Vista, but still works.

Reviewing this section, I noticed that Emsisoft and McAfee are still listed, the former with a notation that definition updates ended in 2016. As VistaLover pointed out in a March 31, 2021 post, definition updates for the legacy versions of McAfee ended January 1 of last year. Of course he provided an official link for this bad news.

Thank you for the information! Revising the AV section, working on the Web browser plug-ins & Instant Messaging sections now!

  11. I did quite a bit of work on Antivirus/Security section. Unfortunately, the options for Vista have only dwindled over the course of 2021 and 2022 :( Maybe the community could help find new additions for this section?

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR OCTOBER 2, 2022:

    • Removed Avast AntiTrack, as Windows Vista and earlier are no longer supported by the product.
    • Removed all Bullguard products, as Bullguard was purchased by Norton in 2021 and the products are no longer sold under the Bullguard brand name. As a result, Windows Vista is no longer supported by Bullguard.
    • Removed Comodo Cloud Antivirus, as it was discontinued and merged with Comodo Internet Security.
    • Removed Cybergenic Shade Sandbox as it now requires Windows 10 or later, and the last version for Vista appears to be unavailable.
    • Removed ONG status from Comodo Cloud Scanner and added version number of the final version, as the software has not been updated since 2010.
    • Removed ONG status from Comodo Antivirus for Servers, as the software has not been updated in at least a decade (since Server 2012 is listed as the latest supported version of Windows Server for the product).
    • Listed Comodo Free Antivirus & Comodo Internet Security v12.0.0.6870 as last version for Windows Vista (according to this support article).
    • Removed CryptoPrevent Anti-Malware entirely, as the latest version does NOT work on Windows Vista, and no documentation exists anywhere on the end of XP/Vista support, nor is the final version available anywhere from my findings.
    • Removed G-Data "Business Solutions" in favor of G Data Security Client, which continues to support Vista (and XP).
    • Renamed "HouseCall" entry to HouseCall Online Scanner, as that is the only HouseCall product to still support Windows Vista.
    • Removed Jetico Personal Firewall, as the software has not been updated since 2016 and appears to be abandoned.
    • Removed ONG status from KeePass; listed v1.38 as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit & Malwarebytes Chameleon, as the products appear to have been merged with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware within the past few years, meaning they're no longer supported on Windows Vista.
    • Removed the information regarding Norton definition updates ending in 2021, as it appears that it continues to receive definition updates on Vista as of October 2022.
    • Listed OSArmor 1.6.0 as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed NoVirusThanks Anti-AutoExec as it was discontinued at some point since it was added to the list.
    • Removed NoVirusThanks SysHardener & Registry Guard/Guard service as they're no longer supported on Windows Vista and the last versions are not available online anywhere from what I can find.
    • Removed Prey Anti-Theft as it no longer works on Vista due to missing functions and the last version appears to be unavailable (ResolveLocaleName error).
    • Removed RogueKiller Anti-Malware as it no longer works on Vista due to missing functions and the last version appears to be unavailable (K32GetModuleInformation error).
    • Added Sandboxie 5.33 as last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed SecureAPlus as it has been discontinued in favor of CatchPulse, which does not support Windows Vista.
    • Removed "Sophos Server Protection products" entry as all Sophos software now requires Windows 7 or later.
    • Removed ONG status from SystemShield Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware products, listed v5.0.0.136 as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Listed Vipre Antivirus v10.x as the last version for Windows Vista.
    • Removed Webroot as the last version for Windows Vista cannot be found online and is not documented anywhere. The software now requires Windows 7 SP1 or later, according to the Webroot website. No trial versions are available for testing either from my findings.
    • Fixed broken download link for Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v5.52.

Hello old friend! :) You should probably specify the update level of your Vista VM. There may be legacy software that worked fine on build 6002 patched to April 2017, but was broken by 6003 (Microsoft predicted as much in 2019). There might be newer software that depends on SHA-2 support that wasn’t available for 6002. If a program relied on Internet Explorer’s engine, then support for TLS 1.2 (not available in April 2017 but predating the build number change) might be necessary. The possibilities are bewildering and perfection might be unobtainable, but I know you will do a good job! :worship:

Hi there! It's nice to see you again. Hope you're doing well :D

I will be testing everything on a fully updated Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 virtual machine, including all Server 2008 updates to January 2020, so it will be at build 6003. If I run into any problems, I'll have a separate VM with build 6002 to test the software to ensure the problems aren't related to build 6003.

And thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot :) I'll do the best I can. Working on the Antivirus/Security software section now!

  13. Well, I just updated the list for the first time in nearly 2 years. I've managed to fix all broken download links in the Web browsers section, and added Mypal 68.x. I've decided to prevent myself from becoming overwhelmed/burned out, I'm just going to take it one section at a time each day until the list is complete. I'm so glad to finally get around to doing this after such a long time. Thank you everyone for your patience, compassion and understanding. :)

Yes, but to a lesser extent, the worst that can happen is that aero doesn't work (it disables itself), but restarting the Desktop Windows Manager service fixes it. And Windows Update doesn't work, you have to install the updates offline manually, because Windows Update keeps checking for updates forever even with the SHA-2 patches and the 4 updates that fixed the loop problem.

    Thank you for the information.

To clarify, does Vista ever fail to boot up on Alder Lake or does it always boot, just sometimes Aero doesn’t work?

    Does this error ever appear:

  15. Hello everyone. I must extend my sincere apologies for being inactive here this year. My life has changed dramatically over the past year, from walking away from a toxic relationship, to putting myself through therapy to recover from the trauma that it caused me, to finding someone new, to working at the Post Office every day and that taking up most of my energy (as @LoneCrusader can relate ;)) the time has just gotten away from me, and I haven't made the time that I should have to keep this list up to date.

With that being said, I am setting up a virtual machine of stock (NO extended kernel) Windows Vista to test software on, and continuing my obligation of providing Vista users with the best and most up-to-date resource available when it comes to running their favorite software on their preferred operating system. I am going to go through nearly every entry still listed as ONG as of October 2020, and find out which ones no longer fit the label of ONG, and try to narrow down exactly the final versions of these pieces of software to run on Vista, and list them here accordingly. I will also be going through and fixing every broken link I can find, as I'm sure a lot of them have stopped working over the past couple of years.

Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding. I hope everyone here is happy, healthy & doing well! :D
(Screenshot of VM so you know I'm serious about this ;):

  16. Hello everyone. Glad to see MSFN is still online! I'm happy to announce that the list has been migrated over to the Eclecboard forum. Huge thanks to my best friend @docR for migrating it for me to his forum and making sure all the formatting is correct.

Here's the link to the sister thread on EclecBoard: https://forum.eclectic4un.me/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=113

Don't worry, I will continue to update the list on MSFN & EclecBoard for as long as both forums remain online. I am going to resume updating it again soon as I've been extremely busy in my personal life lately (and thankfully am now in a healthy, loving relationship :)). After leaving the toxicity I was in before, I feel much better and have regained interest in Vista and the list again and hope to get everything squared away with it within the next couple of weeks, as there's going to be a LOT of new changes made since October 2020...

Hope everyone is doing well!

  17. Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the very long period of inactivity lately. I've had a lot going on outside of MSFN in my personal life that has kept me busy. I also walked away from an unhealthy relationship and have been taking steps to rebuild my life since then, which has kept me from being able to update the list for the past several months.
In light of the recent announcement that MSFN is going offline, I will be moving my list over to a forum hosted by my friend Ryan: http://forum.eclectic4un.me/ This will take a while as I need to manually re-add all of the links and formatting, but I will post the link here when it is finished. Feel free to join our forum if you're looking for a new home once MSFN is no longer available! We're still grassroots at the moment, but we will be building a new legacy software community over there and we'd love to have you join us (@Ximonite& @win32 are already there and have pertinent posts related to Vista Extended Kernel & Win2000's KernelXE!).

Thank you so much everyone here for your contributions to the list over the past 6 years. It has been my pleasure to help provide this information to Vista users for the past several years, and I like to believe our efforts have helped many Vista (and even XP) users over the years. I'm sad to see MSFN go, but all good things do come to an end.

    Best regards :)

  18. Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the long periods of inactivity lately. I've finally gotten around to getting the list up to date. Here's a summary of changes:

    • Updated all links for Windows Vista Service Packs and Platform Update to ones provided by @greenhillmaniac as Microsoft removed these updates.
    • Removed the link to my "Fix Windows Update stuck on Checking for updates in Windows Vista" video since Windows Update on Vista was shut down in August 2020.
    • Fixed last version of eM Client for Vista: changed from version 7.2.36694.0 to slightly older 7.2.35595.0 (thanks to @tweak and @Vistapocalypse for pointing out this error).

There remain some broken links to Microsoft content, mainly in the Additional Microsoft Software & Utilities & Microsoft Office Add-ins & Tools sections. These were likely purged during the "SHA-1pocoplyse" of August 2020. I will work to restore these the best I can as time goes on. Hopefully they are available at the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive...

  19. Since someone mentioned Google Earth in the Extended Kernel thread, I decided to dig into it again and see if the latest version still works in Vista.

Unfortunately, versions starting with 7.3.3 do not work in vanilla Windows Vista, requiring Windows 7+ functions (K32EnumProcessModules being the one I received an error about).

And so, Google Earth 7.3.2 is listed as the last version (thankfully Google still has a download available.. I downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit installers to have on hand for when they will inevitably take them down):

I also removed Rocket League from the "Games" section since someone mentioned in the other thread that it hadn't been working on Vista for months now, but fortunately it works with Extended Kernel. I added Goosebumps Dead of Night 2020 as @burd suggested ;)
