Well after changing the launch condition of each .exe file in the VMware Program Files directory with Application Verifier (x64) using its "HighVersionLie" feature, I have successfully managed to remove the artificial OS block. However, all that did was create a different error...

The VM at least tries to start now, but after a few seconds the VM shuts down and this error appears... I'm pretty stumped at this point. Link to Application Verifier is here if anyone wants to try it out.

I already discovered this was possible back in 2015/2016, however I never posted about it because this absolutely infuriating little error prevents any VM from starting with no way around it:

Also, Telegram Desktop now no longer supports Windows XP and Vista as of yesterday. A message that once said "Update your OS, Telegram is ending support for it on Sept 1." or something along those lines, now says this upon launching the application:

What sound card/chip are you using?

Are you certain that no drivers exist for Windows Vista? If you're trying to get the drivers from your OEM (HP, Dell, etc) instead of the actual chipset manufacturer (Realtek, VIA, etc) then try getting them directly from the chipset manufacturer instead.

You can also try using Snappy Driver installer to download and install the drivers automatically; although the name may sound fishy, this is a legitimate piece of software that makes installing the drivers much easier and I've used it myself on many occasions; it continues to support Windows XP and Vista. Download here.

Also a reminder for users of Telegram desktop on Windows Vista (I use this software myself): in less than a month, the software will no longer support Windows Vista, however it should continue to connect to the Telegram service, as older versions dating as far back as 2014 continue to do so.

Thanks for letting me know. NVIDIA drivers (as well as AMD GPU drivers) used to be covered in LVSFWV/2008, but I decided to move them here since I felt they would be more appropriate here since, although they are software (obviously), they are drivers pertaining to hardware listed here.

AMD/ATI GPU Drivers:

The first official version of ATI Catalyst to support Vista is version 7.1. The last official version of AMD Catalyst to support Vista is version 13.12 (Download: 32 bit  64 bit). However, newer versions up to 15.6 Beta for Windows 7 can be modified to work on Vista. View this thread for more details.

I must admit that my knowledge of hardware/driver compatibility is pretty shaky compared to my knowledge of program support for Windows Vista, so suggestions to improve this list are welcome.

[Windows 7 transformed into Vista - Really nice!]

I'm glad you're enjoying my transformation pack! I found it to be a practical solution for those that are using newer hardware incompatible with Windows Vista (such as Intel Haswell), or those that require newer software that don't work with Vista. The Windows 8.1 one isn't as accurate to the real Windows Vista due to changes in the shell/DWM compared to Windows 7 but it's still far better than anything achievable on Windows 10, where everything is such a broken mess and Microsoft insists on keeping any sort of customization impossible through forced updates that break your changes.

As for me, personally though, I choose to stick with the original Windows Vista as I use Ivy Bridge hardware which works with Vista fine, and don't require anything that only runs on Windows 7 or later. I also find Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 to be faster and more stable than Windows 7 on the same hardware in most cases.

Final 3.40.0 was released three days later (Jan 25th 2019) but, as you've found out, it would run only on Win7+

FileZilla is open source, so perhaps one could recompile more recent source code to again target at least NT 6.0; here's hoping

As you can see, yet another artificial block implemented to keep the software from potentially working perfectly fine in Windows Vista Programs like this aren't worth the time of day, in my opinion. I recommend GIMP 2.8.22 instead of this garbage. Although GIMP no longer supports Windows Vista, it at least somewhat had merit, as it does not work in Vista due to missing Win7+ functions instead of being artificially blocked:

Yes, I tried the final version of .NET 4.8 on Vista just now, and while it could be installed, it unfortunately displays the same behavior as 4.8 Preview:

This means that .NET 4.7.2 is the final version that can be used on Windows Vista without these issues, seemingly

Either way, I believe one can simply extract the program files from the installer by simply opening it with 7-Zip (or similar).

I then modified the .MSI file with Orca like @artomberus did, and received the same error message when attempting to run the program after installing it... However, this limitation is pretty easy to circumvent using @blackwingcat's PEMaker tool:

As far as SP1 goes, .NET Framework 4.7.2 does "require" this, but there is no mention of the Platform Update "requirement" on Microsoft's .NET OS compatibility chart here. Bearing this in mind, the software likely calls for functions introduced in Windows 7's Platform Update, which would explain why it doesn't work in Vista even with .NET Framework 4.7.2 installed...

Sadly, no. Downloading the installer and attempting to run it does not work, and extracting it provides no .MSI installer to use/modify, nor are there any available elsewhere on the web, from what I've found:

Well it turns out that Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 can also be installed on Windows Vista using the same installation method for 4.6.2 Final, and it can also be patched using the .NET 4.6 security updates for Server 2008! In addition, ShareX still works with this version installed, and no dependency errors are present:

Now, I could not find an application that specifically required this version of .NET Framework, but it appears that ShareX is able to use it without any issues, in contrast to .NET Framework 4.8 Preview...

As such, I have also added this version of .NET Framework to the list

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Thanks to @Osman Kovan for figuring out how to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 on Windows Vista, I was able to use that same method to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2 Final on Windows Vista. I just extracted the setup .exe file with 7zip and ran the .MSI installation file contained within it, netfx_Full_x64.msi:

After installing, I then tested ShareX Portable to see if it gave the same missing dependency errors that it does when running it with .NET Framework 4.8 Preview installed, and to my delight, it works just fine in Vista with 4.6.2 Final!

Remembering what @VistaLover asked me to try with 4.6.2 Preview installed, I then decided to try the latest .NET Framework 4.6.x security rollup for Windows Server 2008 to see if it would patch .NET Framework 4.6.2 Final on Vista, and, lo and behold:

It works!

This means that .NET Framework 4.6.2 Final CAN be installed and patched on Windows Vista using @Osman Kovan's installation method, and then by downloading the .NET 4.6 patches for Server 2008 manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

As such, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2 Preview has been replaced with the final version on the list:

Yes, you shouldn't be trying to install a Win7 specific .NET FW 4.6.x update, but its WS2008SP2 counterpart; the actual "payload" should be the same; from Microsoft Update Catalog:

Are you able to spot that the corresponding KB numbers are identical and that, when clicking the download button (a pop-up window appears with content to fetch), you are presented with identical .exe binaries for either W7/WS2008SP2 ? 

My gut feeling is (based on experience) that e.g. file "ndp46-kb4495587-x86_c4172ad5803a4e71ca948c751be9d339fed66ca3.exe" will apply successfully to a 4.6.1 32-bit install under Vista SP2 x86; when your spare time permits, can you please test this hypothesis in your Vista SP2 VM (I understand it's 64-bit, so perhaps you need 4.6.1 64-bit and the 64-bit equivalent of ndp46-kb4495587-*.exe) ???

If you indeed tried to apply "ndp46-kb4495588-x64_cd387e77d1f73443776c35dd9cfa8f5581b93277.exe" on a 4.6.2 Preview 64-bit installation and failed (as pictured), then my suspicions are confounded; the "Preview" can't be patched (but "Final" 4.6.1 should be)

However, those updates will not apply to 4.6.2, as the same "do not apply" error appears above when trying to apply them when 4.6.2 is installed. However, this is not the case with 4.6.1 installed, which confirms your hypothesis:

AIUI, 4.6.2, even in its Preview variety, is an in-place upgrade from 4.6.1, meaning that not only the base install of 4.6.1 would be overwritten, but all of its already installed updates would also be gone, once one installs 4.6.2 Preview; has someone of you verified that this is indeed the case?

Furthermore, would the updates already released for the stable version of 4.6.2 (file NDP462-KB3151800-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe) play nice (i.e. apply correctly) with the 4.6.2 Preview version installable under Vista SP2 ?

I can confirm after installing .NET Framework 4.6.2 on Vista, it does indeed overwrite 4.6.1, however 4.6.1 and 4.6.2 security updates cannot be installed (manually or otherwise) on Windows Vista/Server 2008 due to the updates being OS-specific:

As such, since .NET Framework 4.6.0 is the last officially supported version on Vista/2008, this is the final version that can receive security updates on these OSes, while 4.6.1 and 4.6.2 Preview will remain unpatched.

To confirm, this is what occurs when trying to install the latest 4.6.1/4.6.2 update rollup for Windows 7/2008 R2 on Windows Vista:

Oops, looks like I made a mistake - according to this article on the end of Windows XP support for ZoneAlarm, published on May 1, 2019, the last version for XP/Vista is actually 14.3.119.000. The article also states that you have to contact support to download the last version for XP/Vista, which to me seems a little ridiculous compared to just linking it publicly for everyone, well the free versions of their software anyway.

• Added Zonealarm Free Firewall 15.4.062.17802 as last version for Vista to"AntiVirus/Security software" section, as the software no longer supports Windows Vista as of around November-December 2018. • Updated ESET NOD32, Internet & Smart Security products to v12.1.34.0 as these will likely be the final versions of the software to support Vista.

There is one piece of software I know of, off the top of my head, ShareX. It hasn't officially supported Vista for a while now due to it "requiring" .NET Framework 4.6.2, but the portable version has been able to be made to work on Vista by modifying a small .config file by changing the minimum required version of .NET Framework version number to 4.6.1 from 4.6.2 (thanks to @VistaLover for discovering this sometime last year IIRC).
However, after installing .NET Framework 4.6.2 Preview, performing this modification is no longer required, and the latest portable version of the software works just fine in Windows Vista (the installer will not run):

The game has not "officially" supported Windows Vista for quite some time, however it continued to work until the release of 0.16.x this month, since it now requires functions from Windows 7 or later:

An update regarding IE11...

For the past few hours, the download links for the Server 2012 and Windows 8 Embedded x64 versions of the browser have been broken, however thanks to @i430VX for finding a working link (it seems the original link contained an error):

Anyway, installation went without any issues on Server 2012 x64, and the browser works just as it should:

However, on Windows 8.0, it looks like the browser will not install

Perhaps there's a way to modify the update itself to install on Windows 8, similar to the method used with Powershell 5.0?
