  1. Well, it looks like AOL Shield for Windows XP and Vista has been abandoned, as the browser is now called "AOL Shield Pro" and is now based on Chromium instead of Firefox, and as such requires Windows 7 or later.

I have added the last known version for Windows Vista to the list (thanks to @i430VX for providing a download link):

Hello! Here is custom build of GIMP 2.9.9 - that works on Vista. It's portable. And it supports 32-bit colors. https://www.gimpuj.info/index.php/topic,67846.0.html

Thanks for the addition! Added to the list. However, I must point out that only the 32 bit build works in Windows Vista, as upon attempting to launch the 64 bit build, I was greeted with this error:

  3. For those that follow this list, I've been working on a new list titled "Compatible hardware for Windows Vista." I'm mentioning that here because once this new list is complete, I'll be moving the information contained in the "AMD Chipset & Graphics", "Intel Chipset & Graphics", and "NVIDIA Graphics" sections here to the new hardware-oriented list. I'll go ahead and link up to the new thread in the "Quick Links" section for those interested:

I'm pretty sure the Intel 945 chip set was the first to have an Aero driver

Thanks for the information, I've added the processor information to the list. I've come to a stopping point for now. I'll work on motherboards and GPUs tomorrow. Any input is appreciated, as this is going to be quite the task.

  5. Introduction:

Here, you will find a list of AMD/Intel CPUs/chipsets and Intel/NVIDIA/AMD GPUs which support Microsoft® Windows Vista™. If you have any additions that aren't currently listed, feel free to reply with them and they will be added as soon as possible.

    Supported GPUs:

    Intel GPUs:

    • Intel 915GM/GMS will work with Windows Vista by using XP drivers, however Aero Glass isn't supported due to lack of WDDM drivers.
    • Intel GMA 950 (Desktop: 945GC, 945GZ, 945G; Mobile: 945 Family) or newer, last Intel GPU to support Vista is Intel HD 4000 series (Ivy Bridge; Desktop and Mobile). Download Intel HD 4000 Graphics Drivers for Vista: 32 bit - 64 bit

    ATI/AMD GPUs:

    • ATI Radeon 9250 and all later GPUs released prior to the 9500 will work with Vista using XP drivers, however Aero Glass isn't supported due to lack of WDDM drivers.
    • ATI Radeon 9500 or later; last AMD GPU to support Vista is AMD RX 300 series; drivers are coming soon.
    • The first official version of ATI Catalyst to support Vista is version 7.1. The last official version of AMD Catalyst to support Vista is version 13.12 (Download: 32 bit  64 bit). However, newer versions up to 15.6 Beta for Windows 7 can be modified to work on Vista. View this thread for more details.

    NVIDIA GPUs:

    • NVIDIA GeForce FX 5100 and later
    • NVIDIA GeForce 8 series to GeForce 300 series; download recommended driver here: 32 bit  64 bit
    • NVIDIA GeForce 400 series and later; last NVIDIA GPU to officially support Vista was the GTX 980 along with driver version 365.19. Download here: 32 bit  64 bit -  Note: Vista 3D Vision support was dropped around version 310.00.
    • The GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080 can also be made to work with Vista, as driver versions up to 372.70 work with Vista, albeit not officially supported by NVIDIA. Download here: 32 bit  64 bit -  Note: DirectX applications aren't properly utilized by these drivers under Windows Vista, so this will cause a bottleneck in performance over using the GTX 980 or older, where the 365.19 drivers (more optimized for Vista as they're officially supported) can be used.

Final Apple Mac Computers to support Vista via Boot Camp:

    • iMac; all Late-2009 models
    • Macbook Air; all Mid-2009 models (32-bit only)
    • Macbook and Macbook Pro; all Mid-2010 models
    • Mac Mini; Mid-2010 (This is the only Mac Mini to support Windows Vista 64-bit; earlier models are 32-bit only.)
    • Mac Pro; Mid-2010

    Miscellaneous Hardware:

    • Looking for an Xbox One Controller driver for Windows Vista? View this thread for download + how to install (HUGE THANKS TO @GTAGAME for this.)
    • Download Elgato HD 60 S Capture Card drivers here - to install, extract the exe with 7-ZIP and manually install the drivers in Device Manager (thanks again to GTAGAME for pointing this out).
  6. Looks like GIMP has dropped support for Windows Vista as of version 2.10.0 (stable; 2.9 dev) :(

I tried running the installer, and received this message:

    nsMOTWplQoOufUMDINvwRw.png

I then tried downloading the portable version of the software from here to see if it would run, and I received the following error when attempting to run it:

    58RV5r8uTz6Pfoyzipq-lQ.png

As you can see, the software fails to load due to a missing function in KERNEL32.dll: SetThreadErrorMode, which is a Windows 7+ function.

As GIMP is open source software, this little restriction could probably easily be uplifted to allow the software to run in Vista, as SetThreadErrorMode is a minor function and I recall @smeezekitty creating a proxy stub DLL to stub the call to allow newer versions of Catalyst Omega to work with Vista, back when he was active on here. However, doing that is far beyond my ability so it'll take someone like SK or @UCyborg to do it.

I then tried installing GIMP 2.9.x on Windows Vista (this is an unstable/development release; beta to 2.10) and was greeted with the following error:

    MPeQhClmT9i48PX3rFiOaQ.png

As such, I have added GIMP 2.8.22 to the list as the last version for Windows Vista:

  7. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 1, 2018:

    • Removed Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit entry from the list as the software is now part of Malwarebytes Premium.
    • Updated Malwarebytes AdwCleaner to UNS status, as the software requires Windows 7 or later, but continues to unofficially work on Vista.
    • Fixed broken download link for Handbrake 1.0.7 (last version for Vista).
    • Added SeaMonkey 2.50a1 Nightly as the last version to unofficially support Vista to "Web Browsers" -> "Mozilla Firefox-based" section (modifications required; link to tutorial is next to entry).
    • Updated Basilisk 2018.03.21/Cyberfox 52.x/Firefox 53.0.3 installation tutorial to include SeaMonkey 2.50a1.
  8. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JUNE 29, 2018:

    • Updated Yandex Browser entry to v17.4.1.1026 as the last version for Vista (previous entry contained an older version).
    • Updated Cocoon entry to Cocoon 52.1.x, as this will more than likely be the final major release for Windows Vista, with the release of Firefox 52.9 ESR.
    • Updated Mozilla Firefox 52.x ESR entry to Mozilla Firefox 52.9.x, as this will be the final major release for Windows Vista, with minor (security) updates being released until August 2018.
    • Updated Tor Browser entry to Tor Browser 7.5.x, as this will more than likely be the final major release for Windows Vista, with the release of Firefox 52.9 ESR.
    • Removed PDF X-Change Viewer entries, as the software has been discontinued in favor of PDF X-Change Editor.
    • Added PDF X-Change Editor to "PDF Viewers/Editors" section.
    • Added link to tutorial on how to get the latest version of ShareX running in Windows Vista.
    • Added @UCyborg's modified version of Rufus 3.1.132 (UNS) to "Bootable USB Flash Drive Creation Tools" section, along with the link to his post containing the download.
  9. How to get the latest version of ShareX (screen capture software) working in Windows Vista:

    • NOTE: This method is confirmed working as of JUNE 2018. It could stop working with any given update to the software, as Windows Vista is not officially supported.
    • This method was originally discovered and documented by MSFN member @VistaLover earlier this year. However, the June 1, 2018 server crashes have caused his post to get deleted, so I'll be re-documenting his method in this post.
    • You must have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 installed for this to work. You can download it here.

    1. Visit this page and download the latest portable version of ShareX (12.2 is the current version at the time of writing this).

    2. After downloading, extract the .ZIP file you downloaded and open the resulting folder.

    3. Open "ShareX.exe.config" file with Notepad. It should look like this:

    lHdfC4RkQB_lRgJvh_1Evg.png

    4. Change ".NETFramework,Version=v4.6.2" to 4.6.1

    5. Save the changes you made to the file, and close Notepad.

    6. Open ShareX, and it should now work just fine in Windows Vista! :D

@WinClient5270, if memory serves right, I recollect you having registered previously in the Pale Moon forums (about an issue with Visual Studio 2013 dlls affecting PM 64-bit, that I had identified for you...); perhaps the best way to clear the FUD once and for all would be to post in the linked thread (by Jody) and ask plain and simple what MC's definitive decisions are; not his thoughts/intentions, but if he's actually determined to support Vista in PM28 (at least in the same level he supported Vista in PM27); please don't hesitate to convey some of my reservations/points I raised here ; full WMF+MSE support on both 32-bit/64-bit Vista architectures would be a must; UXP (unlike Tycho) is suitable for that, if they're willing to undo the damage they did to it  concerning Vista; these days, noone wants a browser that won't play back embedded audio-visual content...

Yes, that's correct. The VS 2013 issue happened around this time last year, and Moonchild fixed it, no questions asked.

I will post in the thread that Jody linked when I get a chance, probably tomorrow sometime. I highly doubt Moonchild will put any extra effort into supporting Vista. From what I've seen, his mentality is basically "it either works, or it doesn't... we're not going to support it if it breaks". However, like you pointed out, it's strange that he said that Basilisk/PM 28 should continue to run on Vista, because they've never ran on it to begin with. Basilisk only worked after I modified it with PEMaker, however after version 2018.03.21, it began requiring Windows 7+ exclusive functions so that was the end of the line. Perhaps Moonchild's statement signals a possible restoration of Vista support in a future beta of Pale Moon 28? I doubt it, but I guess we'll find out -_-

But does the MP4 codecs work without installing LAV codecs?  Has anyone tried?  I know that Roytam1's v28 builds work.

Only with the 32 bit version of Pale Moon:

    HTpHRE8nTH_TJHQRo9J-cA.png

I'm not sure exactly when MSE & H.264 (Windows Media Foundation) compatibility was broken in Vista, but I've gone back all the way to v27.5.1 (released October 10, 2017) and the issue was persistent, along with the Directwrite issue. Roy's builds fix the WMF compatibility problem, but not the Directwrite problem.

As for Pale Moon 28 (still in beta), it doesn't work in Vista, at all. This could change in the future, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

  12. As it stands right now, Pale Moon 28 Beta 1 will not run in Windows Vista, since the software is compiled to run on Windows NT 6.1 or later:

    _aLUhWnoRYyHNLy19UHRuw.png

However, this restriction alone can be circumvented using blackwingcat's PEMAKER software, which has been used to get Firefox 53.0.3, Cyberfox 52, and Basilisk (UP TO v2018.03.21) working in Vista (see this post for more details).

However, even after editing the appropriate EXE files using PEMAKER, the browser still won't run in Windows Vista due to missing Win7+ functions:

    ATzMtU7PToaBm3zwd3T8vg.png

Unless Moonchild plans to restore Vista support in a future build, I don't see the final version of Pale Moon 28 being Vista-compatible. First of all, Vista would have to start being targeted when compiling the software in Visual Studio, to get rid of that "not a valid win32 application" error. It would also have to be figured out what functions Pale Moon is looking for that aren't in Windows Vista, and those would have to be either disabled (if they're not crucial to the browser's overall functionality), or rerouted if the missing call exists elsewhere in Vista, similar to what @UCyborg did to allow the latest version of Rufus to run in Vista.

For now, I have listed Pale Moon 27.9.x as the last major release for Windows Vista, and it's going to stay that way until further notice. I hate to be a downer, but I'm not really convinced that Moonchild would be willing to put much effort into allowing new versions of the browser to run in Windows Vista, especially when you consider how few users it has... That's just my 2 cents. I hope I'm wrong

  13. Looks like Rufus, a somewhat popular bootable USB Flash Drive creation tool, has dropped support for Windows Vista (and XP) as of version 3.0, with 2.18 being the last version for these OSes:

    https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/blob/master/ChangeLog.txt

    Quote

    o Version 3.0 (2018.05.29)

UI redesign to follow the flow of user operations (with thanks to Fahad Al-Riyami for the concept)

Drop XP and Vista platform support

Switch all downloads to SSL and use https://rufus.ie as the new base URL

    Add ARM64 support for UEFI:NTFS

Fix delays when querying floppy drives during device enumeration

Improve support of efi.img files on Linux ISOs

Improve support for non-ISO9660 compliant openSUSE Leap ISOs

Improve translation support and remove manual positioning

    Internal fixes and improvements

I don't have access to Windows Vista right now, so I'm not able to test the software on it at the moment to see if it still works, despite the claim on their official website here for the changelog for version 3.1 of the software, that quite prominently states:

    Quote

NOTE: THIS VERSION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP OR WINDOWS VISTA.

As such, I have have removed the ONG status from the Rufus list entry, and have listed Rufus 2.18 as the last version for Windows Vista, along with a download link for the software (Note: this is subject to change in the future if the software is found to be working on Windows Vista, in which case I will update Rufus to UNS status):

Regardless, I'll probably still create the "Compatible Hardware for Windows Vista" thread. I thought about doing it back in 2016 but forgot about it until now. It would help clear up any confusion as to what hardware Vista will run on. I'll probably wait until @greenhillmaniac reposts his findings with running Vista on AMD Ryzen since he confirmed that it works.

Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 is not hardware, it's pure software solution. The download link is on this page. Normally, when you run it and click Next, activation prompt requiring activation key will open, except on Vista, where you get an error that Windows operating system running on this computer is not supported. But, if you attach debugger to the installer and do what I said before clicking Next, the activation prompt will open. Of course, you can't proceed from this point onwards without license key.

Ah okay, I see. When I viewed that link for the first time, I just glanced at it and assumed it was some sort of audio driver for Sound Blaster cards.

Sorry about all the misunderstandings and confusions... I've had a lot going on lately so I've been quite tired for the past few days, so my mind isn't working clearly right now, lol. I'll add the software to the list when I'm on my PC again (I'm on mobile now and it's difficult to edit such a large document on here).

You misunderstood, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood works great without any workarounds. But downloading it and running it on Vista machine could become the problem when Steam drops Vista support.

On an unrelated note, I could play Wolfenstein: The New Order on Windows XP x64 some time ago. This game was compiled with an older compiler and id Software's engines were historically minimalistic in Windows API usage, though recent games use more functions.

Those instructions are for unrelated commercial piece of software, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3. It does use InstallShield installer. If there's a known method for those like with Windows Installers (I'm personally not aware of it), it oughtta be easier than attaching a debugger and hunting for version check routines.

I know some small pieces of the puzzle when it comes to programming for Windows, so I used that knowledge to get that particular installer to cooperate. :)

Oops - sorry about that. Fixed the entry. Thanks for all your work.

I might create a separate thread called "Compatible Hardware for Windows Vista", similar to the 9x thread. I'll link your findings there since there's really nowhere to put it on this list. I'll have to do a ton of research too, but hopefully I'll have it up by the end of the week.

  17. Thanks @UCyborg for your extremely detailed post. I've linked it on my list next to the Wolfenstein: TOB entry.

Anyway, in other news, it looks like Malwarebytes will no longer be supporting Vista (and XP) with new program versions or feature additions, however it will continue to receive definition updates and bugfixes on an as-needed basis for a limited time (an end date for this has yet to be specified):

  18. Sorry for the delay. I am happy to report that the latest version of FileZilla works on Windows Vista SP2 + Platform Update & Supplement without any issues whatsoever:

@UCyborg, do you care to repost your findings on how to get Wolfenstein: The Old Blood working in Vista by modifying the game's executable? Your post got deleted when the servers crashed so I can't link it on my list anymore.

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JUNE 17, 2018:

    • Updated FileZilla entry to UNS status, as the software stopped supporting Vista as of version 3.25.2-rc1, however the latest versions continue to work in Vista.
    • Added WPS Data Recovery Master to "System Management, Cleanup, and Analysis" section.
    • Updated information about Steam support: the software will stop supporting Windows Vista on January 1, 2019. Click here to read more.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm pretty sure I meant to have it marked as UNS as I recall testing newer versions after Vista support was dropped, and they still worked. Haven't tested the latest version though.

I'm on vacation and don't have access to a Vista machine right now, but I'll be back tomorrow so I'll test it to see if it still works or not.

  20. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JUNE 14, 2018:

  21. How to install/run Krita in Windows Vista (WORKS AS OF JUNE 2018):

    1. Download and extract the installer with 7zip. You should get a folder that looks like this:

    2. Next, navigate to "bin" and open Krita.exe. The application should load just fine in Windows Vista, however Aero is automatically disabled for some reason (this could be due to me using a VM, this hasn't been tested on a Vista host):

    Introduction:

The purpose of this post is to document the problems with running Microsoft Windows Vista (as well as Windows Server 2008) on the Intel Haswell (and newer) platform(s), as I feel that this issue has not been clearly documented elsewhere, and as a result is quite unknown. The issues outlined in this post have been consistent for me and other users across all Intel Haswell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake machines on which we have tested Windows Vista, so I know that this problem is not a result of user error or any wrongdoing on mine or any other user's part. In addition to myself, @burd, @98SE, @11ryanc, @AnX, and @dork have each tested Windows Vista on at least one of the aforementioned Intel platforms and the results were generally the same.

    Pre-installation:

Before installing Windows Vista on an Intel Haswell (or newer) machine, you'll need to first disable secure boot and UEFI boot mode in favor of Legacy mode. After doing this, upon attempting to install Windows Vista, you may find that the installer will not load, and your system remains stuck at a black screen with a cursor. This is normal behavior, and it can only be circumvented by repeatedly resetting your system until the installer finally loads. If you're installing from a USB flash drive, you'll also need to be sure to have it plugged in to a USB 2.0 port. If your system doesn't have one, you'll have to install Windows Vista from an optical disc drive.

Post-installation - Intermittent failed boot attempts and system instability:

After installing Windows Vista, you will likely encounter the following error on the first system boot attempt, just before the start-up "Orb" animation would normally appear:

    img20140813082436-jpg.27820

If you do not see this error right away, try restarting your system repeatedly until it occurs (it WILL occur eventually). Sometimes you can click OK, and your system will continue to boot anyway. When this occurs, your system will likely boot into a nearly unusable state, as many system services will have failed to start. The ones I saw most often were Windows Defender and Windows Audio. There is no way to start these services manually other than to restart your computer.
In most cases, however, your system will simply hang at a black screen with a cursor after you click OK, forcing you to hard-reset your system.

Sometimes your system will appear to boot normally (with no visible errors), but once the "Welcome" screen disappears, your system hangs on a black screen. In most cases, you'll have to manually open Task Manager via Ctrl+Alt+Del, and start the Explorer.exe process manually. Once your desktop loads, many system services will have more than likely failed to start.

    Conclusion:

In conclusion, at the current time there's no known way to get these problems to stop occurring, other than to simply use Intel Sandy or Ivy Bridge, which are the last platforms from Intel to properly support Windows Vista. Despite Intel releasing chipset drivers for Vista on Haswell, installing them has no effect on these problems. If anyone has any insight on how to potentially fix these problems to allow Vista users to run their preferred OS on Intel Haswell (and newer), please feel free to let me know.

*Just to clarify, these problems do not affect AMD's Ryzen platform, as @greenhillmaniac has tested Vista on this platform with great success. This is another option to consider if you're still using older hardware with Vista and want to upgrade your hardware, but not your OS.*
