Yup, you might have improperly downloaded the '98SE 2' pack meaning you only download a portion of it and not the whole thing. It happens sometimes. You can avoid the problem of improper downloads by using third party download manager tools such as Getright or Download Express to download 98se 2 because these tools have a 'resume' feature. Sometimes downloads mysteriously quit for some odd reason and most web browsers can't recover and they give a 'false' impression that a download is complete when it really isn't. Download managers, on the other hand, recognize that if a file transfer gets interrupted it will resume and continue on getting the remaining portion of a download.

Differences since installing 98SE2ME
erpdude8 replied to horsecharles's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
are the Copy To Folder and Move To Folder commands added in 98SE2ME? I'll have to ask MDGx on that. You need IE 5.5 or higher for those two commands to show up when clicking on a file in Explorer. It won't work if IE versions earlier than 5.5 as I have recently found out. -
How to install Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack
erpdude8 replied to mkjp's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
hmmm, weird. Explorer.exe version 4.72.3612.1700 worked fine on my Win98 SE system. That file came from the ie4shl95.cab file of IE 5.x Desktop Update. Unofficial W98SE SP v1.62 worked good with that explorer version. Maybe in 2.0 final it should work. -
Coolkill is even better. You can easily close problem apps with Coolkill than any other 3rd party task manager. And it uses few resources unlike those other task managers. Get Coolkill here: http://www.prowebsitemanagement.com/cooltools/coolkill.html Mdgx recommended that tool for me to use. And about the hanging problem when deleting a very large number of files with W98/ME + IE6.x. Get 2xExplorer from this site: http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer/ and use its file/folder shredding feature to 'shred' files and folders. It deletes files a lot faster than Windows Explorer. You can also try out xplorer², the successor to 2xExplorer.

And when installing 3rd party tools to add NTFS support under 9xME systems, DONT expect the same or equal level of NTFS support as featured in NT-based Windows versions. That is the reality. Hopefully after Win98se SP is in 2.0 final, Gape might consider making an unofficial WinME SP sometime in the second half of 2005. Or how about an unofficial Win98 FE (1st edition) post-SP1 Update Rollup Pack. There are still some users out there using Win98fe and can't upgrade to Win98se.

diffrence b/w installing 98se to P1 & P4 systems
erpdude8 replied to chankya's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
yup, sportster00 has got a point. No difference in setup between slower and faster PCs. Win98 SE works fine under both slow and fast computers. Are you doing a 'Custom' install or a Typical install of Win98se, chankya? The Typical, Portable, Compact and Custom install options are only available if doing a 'clean' installation of Win98se in pure MS-DOS mode. -
right on Gape. Let me know if you need the (262232) hsflop.pdr v4.10.2224 english hotfix. I have requested it from MS will test out the patch on my old Win98se PC.

Installation Guide for Win98 SE SP 2.0
erpdude8 replied to Gape's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
ok. might have to disagree with no. 3. Install DX 9.0c fixes recent security problems that have been exposed in DX 8.1b. No DX 8.1b MS04-016 patch is available for Win98 & ME so the only way to fix the security problems in MS security bulletin MS04-016 is to install DirectX 9.0c which includes the security fixes for Win98 & ME. -
Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 beta 3
erpdude8 replied to DanyBoss's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
erpdude8, 2.0b3 includes rsaenh.dll as instrsa.dll. Because, Windows 98 SE original CABs include this file as instrsa.dll. I renamed it for better support for slipstreaming. thanks for the info, gape. I had been wondering what happened to that file. You should dump the 'Powerarchiver 6.11 update' page as soon as possible. There's NO point in keeping it up if you don't have the actual 'UNOFFICIAL PowerArchiver 6.11 Update' posted there. A good alternative to using PowerArchiver 6.11 is ICEOWS from this site: http://www.iceows.com/HomePageUS.html Used to be called ARJFolder, it can now handle many kinds of archive files. And it's freeware. -
Look. Blam-O! DIFFERENT Editions of Windows XP uses DIFFERENT algorithms to determine which cdkeys are valid and which are not valid. Examples: cd-keys from a Pro edition of WinXP are NOT valid for home edition of XP and corp cd-keys are NOT valid for XP home. Also, cd-keys from 'retail' boxed editions of xp are also invalid for OEM pre-installed xp editions. It was that way with Win98, 2000 & Millennium. Get over it. Your recent comments didn't work for me and didn't work for some users. Even if ''XP KeY ReCoVeRER AND DiSCOVErER' did find a 'valid' key for XP home or XP pro it still didn't get rid of activation on those editions of xp. Did several tests with them and still failed. I'm not going to go any further on xp activation. I AM THROUGH! Any further or future comments on xp activation will be just be taking up space on this forum page. Back to the lifecycle of 98se-- partial quote from Blam-O: ----- Here are some things I hate about Win 98E… * Microsoft no longer supports it… * Windows 98SE is somewhat annoying… * Very little Driver Support... ----- WRONG! MS still supports Win98se 'til June 30, 2006. You obviously didn't read some online articles that MS extended support for Win98 & ME or perhaps MS didn't make it known to you, Blam-O, that MS announced an extension. See this Microsoft support page: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1 Even though MS is now only making few & newer security patches for W98/ME they're STILL supporting them. Very little driver support you say? WRONG AGAIN in terms of supporting more older devices. If you said little driver support for 'newer' devices you might be right. W98SE Annoying? YEAH RIGHT! tim_horton, soldier1st, does Win98se seem annoying to you guys? I don't. I find ways to make Win98se work close to the way I want it and I encounter less 'blue screen' errors. Maybe it's because I do a good job keeping my old Win98se machine in tip-top shape. We should be glad Microsoft did the right thing in extending support of Win98, 98se and WinME. It would have been a 'kick in the stomach' if MS did end support on 1-16-04 and not tell many Win98 users worldwide that Win98 support was ending. Read this MS support page on why MS extended support for Win98 & ME: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifewinextndfaq

Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 beta 3
erpdude8 replied to DanyBoss's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
And I've just found out that v2.0b3 of Win98se SP does NOT include the rsaenh.dll file. It was featured in previous versions such as in v1.62 and earlier. Hopefully Gape will correct that mistake and include that missing file. -
soldier1st has got a point, tim_horton. If the hardware you are trying to install is plug 'n play, Win98/ME should already detect the device. If the hardware is not plug and play, use the Add Hardware Wizard from the control panel to install the hardware.

Only 3rd party tools can make W95/98/ME read NTFS. Some tools can only read but NOT write to NTFS partitions. Remember that Win9xME systems can NEVER use NTFS as a 'boot' partition, meaning you can NOT boot from an NTFS volume with Win9x/ME because Win9x/ME's system startup files can't recognize NTFS from the start. It's just a limitation of 9xME. You can read NTFS volumes AFTER W9xME loads but you CANT boot from them. Also note that third party tools that can read NTFS volumes under W9xME have 'limitations'. We can NOT ignore these limitations, people.

do you get error messages when installing DX, msfn1? Try disabling WinME's system file protection feature, then try to install the latest version of DirectX. I disable SFP on my cousin's WinME PC and run DX setup and it worked. More convenient than just trying to copy the dx files from the .cab files.

recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
you've linked to the wrong patch, horsecharles. The Win98 y2k update 1 is for Win98 1st edition systems and NOT for Win98 2nd ed. stuffie699, can you explain further on what version of timedate.cpl file you need. And are u using Win98 FE (1st edition) or Win98 SE (2nd edition). Yes, localized editions of Win98/ME hotfixes do exist. You just have to specify the one provided in your language. if an ms article mentions an 'English' version of a hotfix, MS should have it in another language such as spanish, dutch or german. However, it can NOT be the other way around. If a 'specified' language version of a patch such as the Q320798 kernel32.dll patch is only provided in that language, there can neither be an English version nor any version in other languages than the one specified in the MS article. The Q320798 hotfix is for Korean editions of Win98 only and not for non-Korean versions of Win98. Read MS article 320798 very carefully. So there is NO English version of the Q320798 patch. And be sure when requesting hotfixes from MS, you CLEARLY explain the problem your are having to MS and specify the KB article that best describes your problem AND you mention the hotfix number that you need. This is so you won't get any further delays from MS support. -
Any patched ME msconfigs around?
erpdude8 replied to horsecharles's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
cool. But snakefoot forgot to include the msconfig.chm, msconfig.cnt and msconfig.hlp Help files in his zip file. OOPSIE! Msconfig will not work properly if you try to access msconfig's help features without including msconfig's help files. Get Snakefoot to add the Msconfig help files in all his msconfig packages. -
thanks for the correction, soldier1st. you can install WMP 10 even under the original release of XP. sorry, Blam-O! 'XP KeY ReCoVeRER AND DiSCOVErER 5.12' doesn't work for XP home ed. you can't turn 'xp home' into xp corporate with that. tried that and doesn't work at all. xp professional ok with that tool but not for xp home edition. Tested that tool on another pc as a 'test machine' with xp home and it failed. Anyway I also use XP Home Edition on only ONE PC which is my bro's custom-designed PC. The other PCs I have aren't quite powerful enough to handle XP. My HP computer came with pre-installed WinME and ME runs good. The PC I used as a 'test machine' I put Win98se on there after removing XP because it was too slow. i think you can install wmp 10 under windows server 2003. ask mdgx about that. MS will include a 'bug fixed' and updated version of WMP 10 in Win2003 SP1 and maybe WinXP SP3. i don't need wmp10 because i don't use devices that specifically use the features of wmp10. So I'll stick with WMP9. As I said before, Win98 & ME will last beyond its extended support date. If you properly maintain your PCs using Win98/ME by running Scandisk and Defrag periodically and cleaning the inside of your PC by blowing away the dust & dirt that build up inside your PCs when using them for a long time, your PCs will last for a very long time.

Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 beta 3
erpdude8 replied to DanyBoss's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
thanks gape. --- rpcltccm.dll 4.71.3328 3/29/1999 12 AM 26896 bytes --- MS KB article 243220 has rpcltccm.dll file version 4.71.3328.0 but file size is 26112 bytes and dated 9/08/1999. So that leads me to believe the Q243220 patch has the newer file than what Dcom98 pack has. Here are some other updated files you have not listed in your Needed Updates list for your Win98se SP: Q240896 opengl32.dll v4.00 721680 bytes 1/07/2000 Q319571 keyb.com N/A 19943 bytes 4/10/2002 Q242941 serenum.vxd v4.10.2223 20228 bytes 10/08/1999 (ms article 242941 incorrectly lists version no. for serenum.vxd files) The 890175 MS05-001 security updates contain hhctrl.ocx file version 5.20.3790.233. this version has a known problem noted in the Caveats section of the security bulletin. Use Html Help 1.41 from Mdgx's site instead which has hhctrl.ocx file v5.20.3790.1289 and has no problems. Great that the updated files from the Q257821 patch are included in the Win98se SP. Do you have the full Q257821 win98 patch, gape? if so can you email it to me. click on my username and send me an email. -
Any patched ME msconfigs around?
erpdude8 replied to horsecharles's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
please me more clear on what you are trying to say, horsecharles. There's no need to delete config.sys unless there's absolutely nothing in it. The only 'patched' WinME msconfig is the one found in MS article 272719. The Q272719 hotfix contains v4.90.3001 of msconfig.exe for WinME. -
Please see this site: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19601 and you can't install xp sp2 on pirated copies of XP. I will say it again to just use LEGIT editions of Windows XP. Microsoft will soon require Windows users to 'validate' their copies of Windows sometime in mid-2005 before downloading any new updates & new addons from the Microsoft download center. if MS download center detects a bad or bootleg copy of windows, it will refuse to offer users to download updates. more on this here: http://bink.nu/Article3345.bink And Microsoft is not, I repeat, NOT the only one that has product activation on some of their new products. Even some of Macromedia's software uses 'activation' similar to MS. noted here: http://www.macromedia.com/software/activation/ but at least Macromedia's Flash Player & Shockwave Player are free and don't require activation. Even the ReGet download manager tool uses its own activation feature to verify users that they're using an authorized copy of their download manager. The Deluxe edition of ReGet mentions about product activation here: http://deluxe.reget.com/en/reg_info_faq.htm Anyways my brother got a laptop pre-installed with winxp home edition [oem] sp1 back in late 2003, then update it to sp2. stick to using win98se, 2000 or me if using older machines as they use less resources than winxp.

Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 beta 3
erpdude8 replied to DanyBoss's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I've also got unofficial win98se SP 2.0 beta 3. very good. Some disappointments I like to point out: Updated wupdmgr.exe file not included. I sent this file to you Gape. Hsflop.pdr file is still version 4.10.2223. I will request from MS the Q262232 patch for Win98se that includes English hsflop.pdr file v4.10.2224. Unicows.dll file version 1.0.4018. New version of unicows.dll file is now version 1.1.3790. Go to mdgx's web site and download new Unicows file. Gdi.exe & Gdi32.dll files. Version 4.10.2225 is correct but version DATES are NOT. Those 2 gdi files are dated 8/20/1999 < wrong date! Date should be 3/20/2001 just like the ones from the Q289635 Win98 patch. HTML Help files from XP SP2. Mdgx has revised his Html Help 1.41 package that includes Html Help files from Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 RC1 which is version 5.20.3790.1289. Also fixes a recent security problem mentioned in microsoft security bulletin ms05-001 & ms article 890175. Hopefully you can include most or all of these in beta 4 or 2.0 RC1, Gape. -
Um... eh, AVOID using any XP activation cracks/keygens! Many of them don't work with the XP home edition I have. Stick to using legit versions of XP. Best to get Windows XP with a brand new desktop or laptop computer. More expensive but you won't encounter upgrade hassles with xp when installing it on an older computer. Certain updates and addons will refuse to install or impair pirated copies of xp [wmp 10 is one of them]. All versions of Win98 [including WinME] will last beyond MS's extended support date of june 30, 2006. Windows ME is technically 'Windows 98 Third Edition'. Win98se & WinME include full WDM [Windows Driver Model] support; Win98fe (1st edition) does not. Love Win98 SE AND WinME; they rock! Doom 3 requires at least a Pentium 4 machine, 1.5 Ghz CPU with at least 384 megabytes of RAM. Can't run it on PCs slower than 1.5 ghz processor. Look at all the minimum requirements for Doom 3 either on its product box or check its web site.

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Note that I was using 'PC100' ram as an example. I'm well aware of the new ram modules out there. My bro's new XP-ready laptop PC uses DDR PC2100 dimm modules but it can handle up to 1 Gb of memory, no greater. There are so many kinds of ram chips being sold, some of them are 'proprietary' memory chips, meaning ram chips designed to work on specific machines such as network servers & laptop/notebook computers. Don't use desktop PC memory chips on laptops & servers and vice-versa. If you bought bad or unreliable memory modules, dump 'em and buy ram chips at reputable PC electronics stores that sell high quality ones. Also be careful when handling & installing the ram modules on a desktop, workstation or server machine; they're somewhat fragile. As for installing ram chips on a laptop, don't do it by yourself. Take the laptop to an authorized computer repair shop and have the folks there install the modules. Because the internal system components of a notebook PC are crowded together you might risk breaking something crucial. Unless you have the techo-savvy skills and extra-careful hands, do not attempt to install RAM chips on a laptop machine; let the professionals handle that for you. It's okay if you can install the modules by yourself on desktop or server computers. I'm pretty sure Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot and even Circuit City sell ram chips for new PCs and motherboards. Shop at your local electronics store and see what ram chips they sell. And after you install the right modules for your PC and using any 9x version of Windows, use the tips that Gape posted. It's been great making posts at this forum. Time to sign off and move on to more important stuff in life. -
My bad, I didn't know. Windows 2000 has softpub.dll file version 5.131.2134.0001, MDGx. Perhaps zoem doesn't have a computer fast enough to handle Mozilla browsers. Need at least a P233 Mhz PC with 64 megs of RAM to run Mozilla [those are the minimum system requirements]. IE can run on slow and fast PCs. Who cares which web browser is selected as the default, just as long as it doesn't bring down or crash the system. Well, it's been fun making posts at this forum. I'm moving on with my life.

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
They'll definitely be helpful, soldier1st. CLASYS may have misinterpret my statement of 'it doesn't matter the brand name as long as you match the type of memory' or I was not clear of what I was trying to say, so I'll elaborate on it. The brand name of the RAM chips you install on your computer is barely IRRELEVANT. Anyway when I look on the actual memory modules themselves it's difficult to tell who made the memory modules. On my HP Pavilion PC, I have a PC100 RAM chip from one manufacturer and another PC100 RAM chip from another. Both of them work because my HP computer's motherboard supports them and that they're both PC100 memory modules. It's the 'type' of RAM that matters most. The REAL issue is about RAM compatibility and whether or not the computer's motherboard supports the type of RAM chips you install, nothing else. It is NEVER a good idea to install different kinds of RAM chips on a PC's motherboard and NEVER a good idea to install UNSUPPORTED memory chips on a motherboard. That's a waste of time and money. Read the motherboard's manual or the computer's user guide to determine what kinds of RAM chips your PC uses before buying RAM chips. Also, know the motherboard's limits on how much RAM can be used. My HP Pavilion PC can only handle up to 512 Mb of RAM, no higher. If I try to install RAM chips greater than that, my HP computer won't use the extra RAM and it'll be a waste of money. If your computers can handle up to 2 Gb, go for it. Just don't go beyond the RAM limitations of your PC's motherboard. Also, when buying memory chips at a computer electronics store, ask the salesperson there what kind of RAM chips they sell AND specify what exact brand & model of the computer you are using. When I shopped at Fry's Electronics, I asked the clerk if they sell memory chips for my HP Pavilion PC and that person provided me the chips that are compatible for my PC. Fry's Electronics even sells older memory chips like the old SIMM memory modules. I know because I saw a long list of the RAM modules they sell.
