Ms06-015 Patch-> win 2000 shell32.dll ?
erpdude8 replied to winxpi's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
well it is too bad after MS02-014 shell32.dll fix for Win98/NT4 was released, TweakUI can no longer change the shortcut arrows on shortcut icons. That should no longer be a big issue as I can use Resource Hacker to either remove the shortcut arrows or even change the shortcut arrows to light arrows on the Q313829 shell32.dll file for Win98/NT4. nice graph charts, hp38guser. MS05-008 & MS05-016 vulnerabilities for Win98/ME can NOT be fixed. For MS05-024 the vulnerability might also be fixed for Win98 SE since Win98se originally has webvw.dll version 5.00.0312.0. BTW - MS05-049 shell vulnerabilities can NOT be patched for Win98/ME because they're unaffected [duh!] -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Please remove the DHTMLED.OCX + TRIEDIT.DLL IE4/IE5 MS09-011 security updates off your IE page. They are no longer available from Microsoft as they have pulled them off their download servers. Also I have found a fatal flaw with Microsoft's KB832414 MSXML 2.5 [MSXML.DLL] patch. It does NOT contain a CAT file for WinME and if you run this patch under WinME, the updated MSXML.DLL file will get REJECTED by SFP . WinME users MUST run Coolkill or Winkill to shutdown STMGR.EXE and run the KB832414 MSXML 2.5 update while SFP is disabled to update the MSXML.DLL file. -
I'm using an older version of Mcafee software and had no problems with the 98se SP and 98se2me packs. BTW - new Mcafee scan engine 5100 is now officially released. I think PROBLEMCHYLD needed to shut down ALL of the Mcafee software first before installing the packs. What is NOD32?

I do have time, sort of, to fix just about any uninstall problem for any unofficial SP including the 98fe SP that I am working on. Now we just need a response from Tareek. See if you guys can send him an email or PM.

Enable48BitLBA | Break the 137Gb barrier!
erpdude8 replied to LLXX's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
yea LLXX, let's not forget Win98 FE systems. there are still a few users out there stuck with Win98 first edition. -
I can unplug the IOMagic Datastation USB device without using safe removal icon and it'll be okay but only under Win2000/XP. If I do this under Win98/ME, a warning message will say that the device was unplugged before it was stopped.

What Are The Minimum Processors Needed To Run 98 & 98SE
erpdude8 replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
nope. Minimum CPU requirements for Win98fe/Win98se are Intel 486 processor 66Mhz or better with 16 megabytes of memory. making Win98 run on a 386 processor and you will regret it - BIGTIME! the CPU requirements of Win98 were printed on the Win98 product boxes. -
My IOMagic Datastation USB floppy drive/media card reader device also uses Mitsumi USB Floppy drivers for Win98fe/Win98se and does NOT work well with nUSB drivers; the Mitsumi USB floppy drivers should display the Safe Removal icon on the system tray. Do NOT use nUSB drivers on ANY USB Floppy Drive.

you mean a newer version of the unofficial 98se service pack. you will see it when Gape is ready to release it. right now he is very busy working on it.
-
Big Monstro, maybe you should help us in creating a beta version of the next release of Gape's 98se service pack if you are so f*ckin impatient. Me and the other members of this forum would like to hear from you if you are interested.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Have you revised the MP917734.exe patch for WMP 7.1? Also, check out the comments by Tareek here about adding better UNICODE support: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...1407&st=225 -
AHHH, NUTS! Version 6.6.8063.0 of MFC42.DLL file from Win2003 SP1 CHOKES when trying to run the Dcomcnfg.exe file in WinME giving a "link to missing export" error message. Revert back to version 6.2.4131 of MFC42.DLL file and Dcomcnfg.exe will work correctly. Let's see if version 6.6.8063 of MFC42.DLL file can work under eidenk's machine. BTW - you can now add Q276602 pci.vxd 4.90.3004 fix into the pack. relatively safe even for laptop PCs. The problem mentioned in MS article 810447 is more of a power management issue with multiple pc card flash storage devices when Q276602 is installed but no longer seems to be a big deal. best to use usb flash storage devices in place of the pc card variety. Note to MDGx: what do you think of Tareek's comments of adding better UNICODE support into Win9xME? see them here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...1407&st=225

neat. great way to fix the registry problems with Windows Installer if it isnt working correctly.

It has been nearly 8 months since Gape has released version 2.1a of the 98se service pack and we have not heard from him for a few months now. I hope he is okay. if anyone wants to contact him try emailing him from his 98se service pack page: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
-
did you also fix the errors in the spuninst.inf file?
-
maybe he is on vacation. I just hope nothing bad happens to him. maybe it's time I started a new topic similar to the "Where is Gurgelmeyer" thread in the Win2k Hotstream forum. It has been almost eight months since 98se SP 2.1a was posted.

I think you may have released it too soon. I found some minor problems with installation. Make a few changes to the SPUPDATE.INF & SPUPD-2.INF files. In the SPUPDATE.INF file make a change in the "RunPostCommands.Section" --- [RunPostCommands.Section] rundll32 ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection SPUPD-3.INF,DefaultInstall --- change it to SPUPD-2.INF. And inside the SPUPD-2.INF file change the part that reads "rundll32 ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection SPUPD-4.INF,DefaultInstall" and make it point to the SPUPD-3.INF file. Also make some changes to SPUNINST.INF file, change the uninstall info to beta 5 as it still mentions beta 3. hope to see a beta5 V2 of the ME SP soon. You may also want to add Q832414 msxml.dll (XML 2.5) hotfix in beta 6 as WinME has older msxml.dll file. Note to Tareek: there you have it. Improved UNICODE support for WinME will NOT be added onto the ME service pack as it will make it bloated and way too large to download. Unless you can find unicode files that are very small, it just will not be made part of the service pack for windows me.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
thanks MDGx. next beta will be v2.04 instead of v2.01. if there was going to be a final release of the 98fe sp2, I may release it at the end of the year. I am getting close to a point where I wont be making any more changes to the SP and will be away from the computer world for a few months (so I can get back to more important things in life). I'll probably stop it around beta 4 or beta 5. BTW - Uninstallation of the 98se service pack 2.x IS supported only by Add/Remove programs and not by using third party uninstall tools. -
You might want to consider getting an external USB floppy drive/media card reader combo like IOMagic's DataStation and put the USB stick into a closet. IOMagic's external USB floppy drive and multi-card reader can read Compact Flash cards, IBM Micro drives, Memory Sticks, Multimedia Cards, Secure Digital Cards and Floppy Disks. It's a small portable 7-in-1 external device. I recently bought it at a local Staples store. WinME and WinXP have built-in drivers for IOMagic's Datastation drive. Using it under Win98 & Win2000 will require IOMagic's USB Floppy drive and Card Reader drivers to make it work. If you are using it under Win98/ME, you can disconnect the device by using the Safe Removal icon; under Win2k/XP it can just be unplugged from the usb port. great for connecting to new laptop & desktop PCs that no longer have built-in floppy disk drives.

Petr, the_guy, eidenk, MDGx and anyone else reading this thread: I want to get your opinions on what Tareek was suggesting on improving UNICODE support for WinME. Here's his latest quote: ok I stand corrected. works good but this time I got MFC42.DLL version 6.6.8063.0 from Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Esdi_506.pdr version 4.10.2223 is mentioned in MS article 239694: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239694/ not sure about v4.10.2224 of esdi_506.pdr good points hp38guser made of testing the patch on HDDs of all sizes. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
It will need to be revised, the_guy. I've just found problems with it. It keeps on prompting me for the MSXML3.DLL file. Found out that the [sourceDiskFiles] and [sourceDiskNames] sections are missing from the kb909363.inf file. That's what's causing the installation problems. I will send a revised kb909363.inf file with the corrections to MDGx so that he can re-create the unofficial 909363 patch for win98/me/nt4. -
program manager is the alternative to explorer!
erpdude8 replied to M_win's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Program Manager was a very useful app in the Windows 3.x days. Might be a good alternative to using the Start menu (then again maybe not). See MS articles 116245 & 142255 on using Program Manager in Win9xME and any issues with it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/116245/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142255/en-us -
I hope the moderators of MSFN.org Forums BAN Link21 from this site. what an absolute JERK he is. YEAH, you tell him bristols! All right everyone, let's get back to business (and perhaps clean up the mess Link21 made in this thread). I've checked the mozillaZine page and it mentions Firefox 2.0 beta 1. I'm beta testing FF 2.0b1 right now under WinME and WinXP [see, at least I like both 9x and NT versions of Windows]. FireFox 1.5.0.5 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 will be out in a few weeks. not sure what Link21's problem is. he needs to have his head checked by a psychiatrist or something.

Let's not forget, there was also a version 4.10.2226 of esdi_506.pdr for Win98se [Q252187]. this hotfix was built for certain IBM laptops only that came bundled with pre-installed 98 SE. this version may cause startup problems (like hanging at startup before Win98se loads) on non-IBM machines.
