That's nice to hear, CharlesF. Let's tell MDGx about this so that he can create a new unofficial IE6 SP1 cumulative update for Win98/ME/NT4. unfortunately, Dave-H, that's the sad truth. not even blackwingcat can make IE6 SP2, IE7 or IE8 work under Win2000. IE6 SP1 support for Win2000 SP4 will end in mid-July 2010, cluberti. read 'em and weep, 98/ME users.

I beg to differ about Vista being "garbage", Siginet! Sure the original release of WinVista was a major disappointment but at least when I updated it to Vista SP2 on my mom's Dell Inspiron laptop (which had pre-installed Vista Home Basic Edition), it runs better. I don't have that much problems with Vista anymore. I will let my aunts continue to use Win2k Pro SP4 on their computer (a Dell Optiplex GX100 desktop PC) until perhaps late summer of 2011. Microsoft may send W2k to the graveyard in July 2010 but they won't mind using W2k for another year. It's been a great run for Win2000. Ten years worth.

Happy new year 2010. Latest KDW / FCWIN2K is now 0.81b (just released today)! I wonder if that will work with latest Google Chrome dev build browser which is 4.0.288.1, along with Apple Quicktime 7.6.5 and Apple Safari 4.0.4 (aka. 531.21.10). I like to try those under my relative's Win2k SP4 computer.

erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
MDGx, you need to produce new unofficial Dec. 2009 DST/TZ updates for Win95/98/ME & for Win2k/NT4. the Dec. 2008 KB955839 DST/TZ updates on your site are one year old already and are outdated. I may be removing references to the old, unofficial Dec. 2008 DST/TZ patches off my updates pages soon. Dec. 2009 DST/TZ KB976098 updates article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976098 -

one problem with this, blackwingcat: WMP.DLL file included in the wmp9ex2k.zip file is version 9.0.3364. Many of the WMP9 files (including the wmp.dll file) I have in my WMP9URP packs are from WinXP SP3 which are version 9.0.45xx. Can your break limiter WMP.DLL patch also work with WMP.DLL file version 9.0.4507 from MS KB article 973540? -
Turn off autoplay without Vista claiming all discs are blank?
erpdude8 replied to bizzybody's topic in Windows Vista
what kind of DVD burner are you using, bizzybody? get specs of it in Device Manager and expand the CD/DVD drives section. -
The Smart UAC Replacement program was created by a company called Security Stronghold who created TrueSword which was a security risk. In short, I do NOT trust that program at all. Read the following about that "questionable" program at these sites: http://www.winvistaclub.com/s17.html http://download.cnet.com/Smart-UAC-Replace...4-550091-1.html http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1294312 http://www.softpedia.com/progViewOpinions/...nt-105885,.html Since I've already turned off UAC on my mom's Vista laptop without the help of third party tools, better to keep it off if you're annoyed by it. I'm not letting the Smart UAC Replacement program touch my mom's Vista laptop at all. period! EDIT: I do remember using TweakUAC on the Vista laptop in early 2008 which was a better and cleaner alternative than SmartUAC. There was also Norton UAC Tool which sort of worked on most Vista computers but seem to crash on some Vista machines. Still, I'm better off having UAC disabled completely as I have Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware and NOD32 installed on the Vista laptop.

though that one is only for 32bit editions of XP. for XP 64bit editions, the KB955704 exFAT update can be downloaded here. this one was released Aug. 25, 2009 along with the exFAT updates for Windows Server 2003 systems!

Trouble with installing Windows 2000 SP4
erpdude8 replied to clueless_furball's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I've actually ran Win2k SP4 on my aunt's Dell Optiplex workstation PC with 128Mb RAM with a 500Mhz Intel Celeron CPU; it ran Ok but it had a paltry Seagate 6.4Gb hard drive. replaced that with a Seagate 20gig HD and upgraded the RAM to 256Mb and the CPU to 566Mhz; got the other Intel CPU chip from a friend's old PC. Now my aunt's W2k SP4 computer runs better. I still have a Win2000 Professional CD that already contains SP4, clueless_furball. you could find one either on eBay or Amazon.com -
one problem with the patch you've linked to, cluberti: it requires only XP SP3. Microsoft didn't make the "fix" for XP SP2. so far, KB955839 and KB951072 are the last ones for XP SP2.
-
forget it, -X-. the WindowsXP-KB951072-x86-ENU.exe file was flawed which is why MS made a V2 version and trashed the original one.
-
all you XP folks better upgrade to XP SP3 before July 2010. Microsoft is dropping ALL support for XP SP2 on July 13, 2010 as noted here. after that date, any XP security updates created will require just SP3. all my xp machines have sp3 on them and they work well
-
forget about transferring it thru a floppy, midcoastmaniac! the oembios.bin file is at least 10 megabytes in size. best chance you have is probably thru a re-writable cd.

Minidumps are indeed held in \windows\minidump, but they're notoriously useless. If you configure your machine for a kernel or complete dump, it will create the .dmp file directly in the Windows folder.Minidumps are only good to tell you about very obvious crashes. in that case, we need to show the OP how to set XP to create kernel or complete memory dumps. Open System Control panel, click on Advanced tab, then click on the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" section, then change the "Write debugging information" option from "Small Memory Dump" to either "Kernel Memory Dump" or "Complete Memory Dump". Then click OK on all the dialog boxes to save changes. Kernel/Complete DMP files will be created in the %SystemRoot% folder. note that you must be a user with administrative privileges to make these settings changes.

erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Probably. I don't have the hotfix files to test. If the Patch Program does not complain when Patching, it should work. don't worry rloew. It's easy to obtain the Q274175 hotfix files. If you have an email account, go to this MS support link, click on the I Accept button (if it is your first time there), then select the hotfixes you want for certain platforms, fill out the required info, then click on the Request Hotfix button to obtain them. MS will send you an email containing the hidden links & password to the hotfix files. that's good news dencorso. I've recently made an unofficial Q961371 (MS09-029) t2embed.dll patch for Win98/ME/NT4 which replaces the Q908519 (MS06-002) patch. I'll send it to him shortly. I may also have to send him the latest dhtmled.ocx (KB973869) & triedit.dll (KB956844) files later this month. -

I don't have a Windows 95 setup so I don't run tests on it. My Patches use Pattern recognition to make changes. This way I avoid having to Patch each possible Version. I ran my CDFS Patch Program on the CDFS.VXD Version 4.0.1111 I extracted from a Windows 95 CD. It Patched the File without any Problems. Since this is the oldest, it should work for the other Windows 95 Versions as well. can it also work with the CDFS.VXD files listed in MS Support KB article 274175, rloew? well lightning slinger, so far MDGx hasn't been responding to my recent emails I sent to him about a bunch of new MS updates like the KB961371 (MS09-029) T2embed.dll security updates, the KB970653 Aug. 2009 Cumulative Time Zone updates, the KB973346 (MS09-032) ActiveX KillBit security updates, etc. hope he isn't "lost in space" so to speak. -
the DMP files are NOT stored in the Windows folder, nitropuppy. They're stored in the \Windows\Minidump\ folder as I remember correctly. could be a mis-behaving or corrupted device driver causing that BSOD. had that a few times on my XP machine. replaced a bad driver that caused the problem with a clean one and the BSODs never came back.
-
MDGx: can you try making unofficial Time Zone DST KB970653 August 2009 updates for Win95/98/ME/2000/NT4 in your free time? The KB970653 TZ/DST updates replace KB955839, KB951072, KB942763 and older updates.
-
bummer, Dave-H. looks like you'll have to use the files from KB969897 for IE6 SP1. I had a feeling at some point the newer IE6 security patches will no longer work for Win98/ME and only for Win2k & above. tErmY: KernelEx 4.0 final recently came out. ditch the RC2 version and install the final release.

my win98se not detected other hard disk, why ?SOLVED
erpdude8 replied to Ballinville's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
no wonder. Win9x systems can't recognize NTFS formatted hard disks without third party NTFS drivers like Winternals NTFS for Win98. -
I know the "classic" installer worked under Win95 as I've tested myself a few months ago on an actual Win95c computer. For the MSI based installer of Opera, I'll have to test that one this weekend. Also, the Opera MSI installer requires Windows Installer 2.0 for Win95.

Kernelex - need detailed installation instructions
erpdude8 replied to cocoa.1981's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
also, use the latest version of KernelEx available which is currently 4.0 RC2 mentioned here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=130936 -

Too bad the CDFS patch rloew made won't work under Win95 (BenoitRen is gonna be disappointed). Win95 can support DVDs with the appropriate DVD hardware & latest DirectX drivers installed under W95. His patch only works with Win98/ME.
