  4. Easy fix. You must specify the exact version build of wmp.dll under this registry key [don't use this 1, it's from XP SP3 + WMP11]: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions] "wmp.dll"=hex:00,00,0b,00,19,14,59,16 "wmploc.dll"=hex:00,00,0b,00,19,14,59,16 "wmplayer.exe"=hex:00,00,0b,00,19,14,59,16 ;These values get written into the registry every time you register wmp.dll this way: regsvr32 %windir%\system\wmp.dll and probably this way too: %windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /RegUniv %windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UpdateWMP I have deleted those values from my 98SE registry, to avoid any future headaches. And if I install a newer version of wmp.dll, wmplayer.exe (WMP) or wmploc.dll (from some WMP update), I run this REG file again after the install, to make sure those values are gone: REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions] More info: http://mobilecomms.com.au/Tips/wmp.htm HTH

  6. If this helps... Make sure you get the proper letter for the WinME setup CD-ROM [in this case X]. Make sure the 2nd line below is run only from native DOS, before Windows UI loads. EXTRACT/Y X:\WIN9X\PRECOPY1.CAB /L %winbootdir%\SYSTEM KOMMCTRL.DLL IF EXIST %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\KOMMCTRL.DLL REN %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\KOMMCTRL.DLL COMMCTRL.DLL EXTRACT.EXE must be present somewhere in the path [otherwise must specify full path = driveletter:\directoryname ] for this to work. Edit FYI... If you run commands that involve windir/winbootdir variables from native DOS, you must use %winbootdir% variable, because in native DOS %windir% doesn't work. HTH
  7. On WinME (default installations) you can find IESHELL.INF in C:\WINDOWS\INF [%windir%\INF]. This is the relevant part: [Version] Signature=$CHICAGO$ SetupClass=Base LayoutFile=layout.inf,layout1.inf,layout2.inf [DefaultInstall] AddReg=RegisterDLLs [RegisterDLLs] HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\500","030",2,"%11%\shimgvw.dll|DllRegisterServer"You can save this as IESHELME.INF (in Notepad) and then run it like this: RUNDLL32 ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\IESHELME.INF,DefaultInstall [Replace C:\WINDOWS with your own drive letter + WinME install directory if different.] Just make sure LAYOUT1.INF [also from WinME setup CD-ROM] is in the same directory you run IESHELL.INF from [default would be %windir%\INF]. 11. You too, and thanks for your thoughts.I guess I may also be something of a devoted fan, I've watched the entire B5 [all 5 seasons and the movies] twice, and also attended a local sci-fi convention a while back, where I've met Jerry Doyle [Michael Garibaldi]. Their epitaphs couldn't have been more appropriate, both actors will be remembered for their great roles in B5. Seems that Mr. Katsulas' last B5 role was in "The Legend of The Rangers" [2002 SciFi TV channel 2 hour miniseries, that was supposed to kick-start a new B5 spin-off]. He was the only good thing that happened to that low budget, B-flic, which crashed horribly because they chopped the original script from the genius of Mr. Straczynski [whom I've had the pleasure to meet at Comic-Con 2002 in San Diego]. I've also watched "The Lost Tales", that direct-to-DVD sequel from 2007, not the same without the main cast members. It was a nice surprise thou, to see Teryl Rothery [Dr. Janet Fraiser from SG-1, another 1 of my favorite sci-fi series] act opposite Bruce Boxleitner. Best wishes. I am Farscape
  12. Haven't checked those links lately, I guess not all websites stay out there for ever... 13. If you have the drive/partition for XP already formatted FAT32, there is no need for 3rd party boot manager, or other tricks. Windows XP has a built-in boot manager that will recognize Win98, and will dual-boot for you. Has a menu similar to Win9x boot menu: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN After installing XP, just tweak your C:\BOOT.INI in Notepad: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289022 BOOT.INI switches: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833721 http://web.archive.org/web/20080430030837/...s/bb963892.aspx http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/asm/mbr/bootini.htm 1. Make sure your drive/partition is (freshly) formatted with FAT32, and that no other NTx [NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7] OS has been installed in the past. That's because 98 won't recognize other boot sectors installed by other OSes like Linux, OS X, WinNTx. So if you select to install XP first, you will not be able to install 98 unless you use a 3rd party boot manager. Boot managers [free(ware)]: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm#BTM Boot tweakers [freeware]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#BOO 2. First must install Win98/98SE, but not in the default directory [which is C:\WINDOWS], but C:\WIN98 (example, change if you wish). To customize Win98 setup, see these switches: http://www.mdgx.com/last2.htm#SETUPSW 3. Boot into Win98. Place the WinXP setup CD in your CD/DVD drive, or better, copy [from Win98] the entire XP disc onto your HD, your XP installation will be much faster. Now you may want to "nLite" your setup, btw... MSFN has the best unattended setup guide on the planet: http://unattended.msfn.org/ to install completely unattended XP with built-in SP3, up-to-date updates/hotfixes, custom drivers, apps, tweaks etc. Do not allow XP to re-format the drive with NTFS ! You must install XP on FAT32, in order to access XP from within 98, and the other way around. And it is possible that you may have some drivers that can be used for both. 4a. If you wish to create a custom CD/DVD to install XP from, just reboot with that custom XP setup CD/DVD [make sure it is bootable] inside your drive, and let it install on its own. Make sure your mobo BIOS can boot from the CD/DVD drive: enable that BIOS option if u have to. To add the boot sector to your custom CD/DVD, u can use this free tool [mentioned also in the MSFN unattended guide]: http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ 4b. If you wish to install from the HD [entire XP setup CD copied], just run setup.exe from the root dir of the CD, or better, run winnt32.exe from the I386 subdirectory. This guide has most of the steps for "hands-free" unattended XP setups: http://www.mdgx.com/xp1.htm#IXPA HTH
  14. FileList.reg 2.0 revisited... If using 2000/XP/2003 [and probably Vista/2008/7], you can have that text filename be the current date +/- time, so it will never overwrite itself again... 15. I see the Computer World article has Win98 as the fastest OS for SSDs... http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/912...d_state_drives_ Way to go '98! It just wears off the flash memory faster because writes to same sectors over and over, unlike Win2000. Even so, it is still the fastest.

That's why at the time I didn't take in consideration the limitations M$ imposed on WinME, respectively the removal of native MS-DOS mode. But now I've added all necessary steps to the ol' guide, to make sure WinME can be forced [if following the intro guidelines] to exit to native DOS, and even reboot back to either native DOS or Windows GUI, because the WinME DOS Patch allows to use CONFIG.SYS + AUTOEXEC.BAT files, Win95/98 style. CCCP codecs pages have a Wiki guide for MPC: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php..._Player_Classic The Wikipedia page for MPC might also have some references you can use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Player_Classic You could also try the older [but good reference] MPC HTML Help file: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/g...ng_20050402.zip And when all else fails, there's always VideoHelp: http://www.videohelp.com/ HTH
  25. Wow... that's a lot of work, but I bet it's worth every minute you invested, now you have the stand alone MS-DOS 7.1 OS, a DOS gamer dream come true. btw: Did you add dosshell files to the mix? Those don't need version patching. The only major bug of dosshell I know of is that it is not LFN compliant. P.S. May I ask for a copy of your files, please, for my own personal use only? [e-mail] Many thanks in advance. Best wishes.
