It's from Feb 2004. When you run the program it tells you it can't find a SB card. While the message is still on the screen, go into your C:\Windows\Temp folder and copy the Crf000 folder to your desktop. In there is a Drivers folder, inside that is the Win2K_XP folder- it's actually for 98SE too. I just got my Audigy LS working. I thought my card was fried, the last time i used it a few years ago. it made garble sounds but I guess it was just a driver issue.

I don't consider myself a big gamer, but recently I wanted to see what my laptop could run in 98se with or without KernelEx. I bought Far Cry and later Far Cry 2. The Far Cry that I got is a "SoldOut Software" package which says Vista compatible. It installs but doesn't run-it just kinda fizzles out after a couple seconds with no error, although it's suppose to be win98 compatible. It installs a version 1.4 patch for the game. I see in earlier posts here Far Cry has worked in 98SE. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it because I have an updated installation DVD aimed at Vista compatible? Far Cry 2 installs (set to KernelEx WinXp mode ) and eventually crashes with an error when it tries to update directX before the installation is over. It has C++2005 SP1 package and dotnetframework 2.0 on the DVD-the same versions that can be installed in 98se. I didn't realize when I bought Far Cry 2 that it needs to "phone home" to unlock the game. It was giving me a "security" error when i tried to run the exe on DVD. So I guess this one's out of the picture

you could try Airlink AWLH6080. I can't confirm it works but I can confirm that AWLC6080 works and runs at 130Mbps in 98SE.

I'm surprised how well ACPI works in 98SE with ICH7 on my Inspiron 9400. The system powers off when I shutdown or when the lid is closed. In all my previous dell laptop experienced ACPI didn't work at all--ICH4-6 Inspiron 5150,8600,or 9300.

I have 3dMark03 results from my Dell Inspiron 9300 (Pentium M 2.26ghz) and Inspiron 9400 (Pentium Core2 Duo 2.16ghz) both using the same Go 7800GTX card. And results from the 9300 with a ATI x300 card. Both running 98SE. Files attached are xls (excel 97). Notice the "B" in operating system "service pack" . Apparently the Go 7300 is the G72 chip and the Go 7800gtx is the G70 chip. So I'm thinking the NV driver is not compatible with the G72-at least with this laptop (Inspiron E1505). Rloew supplied me with a test program and determined his patch was not necessary. The Go7300 has 128mb physical ram and is able to use 128mb more system ram (in NT) for 256mb total. I turned page filing off in 98se- but it didn't make any difference. Since there isn't any alternitive 9x compatible video card that will mount correctly on this, I rest my case with 98SE and this laptop. I have moved on to the Inspiron 9400 / E1705 and I'm not dissappointed.

I came across Sigmatel4487.exe a while ago when I was searching for early hda drivers for to try in 98SE on my Dell laptop. I found the WDMDEBUG folder interesting- I haven't seen this folder before. It looks like it has some kind of debug drivers for stac97 and hda. The version numbers are identical to each other.

I got tired of messing around with printer ink cartridges so I bought a HP LaserJet M251nw. It works in 98SE with the HP PCL5 9x driver already installed in 98SE. I connect to it using wireless through my router with the HP network printing port monitor software for 9x. (you can find it here in another topic) I'm not sure it will work through USB connection--the only thing 98SE detects is a USB storage device.

I had the exact experience with my Inspiron E1505- 19 times out of 20 system would freeze at "updating system settings". I recently tried reinstalling from scratch and couldn't get past the system freeze no matter what I did. I eventually had a successful install and I backed it up. I think you'll have to do the trial and error method till you figure out what can work--- like installing DX9 as soon as possible -(in safe mode if necessary)--which will probably be your biggest hurdle--at least it was for me. I think the intel graphics is giving you the black screen or whatever graphics driver Windows is trying to load. I got my black screens every time the Nvidia driver loaded. Hope this helps

You have to disable USB emulation in BIOS on some Dell laptops so Windows 98SE can detect usb devices.

I updated from release.10 to 13 and 3Dmark05 loads now! It was complaining about something missing in advapi32.dll before. I'm using 3dmark05_v130 10.01.244 (found by google), not the one from their official site. It doesn't run the tests but I can see the system information it detected in 98SE.

excellent, I remember reading about this but I couldn't put my finger on it. I tried rloew's nvcheck and it returns "invalid size or unrecognized video card" 8 times. I hoping it's the latter. I'll contact RLoew and post back findings.

I found the nv82.16 driver and installed it. I also disabled the network wireless card. Then I adjusted powermizer down from max power savings to any other setting. The effect was that it increased frame rates considerably. But, I also get the black screen randomly. I didn't see any performance difference when adjusting powermizer with the nv82.69 driver. Also, I found it interesting that in win98se (with either driver), dxdiag shows the nv7300 go card has 128mb ram but in XP it shows 256mb of ram

I had a successful install of Wireshark 0.99.4 , works good- probably because I'm using the latest KernelEx updates and stubs. Didn't freeze when choosing menu item "capture" and then "options"

It's got a Core 2 Duo T7400 processor and I'm using a GN-WS30N-RH wireless network card. The hard drive and dvd are sata drives. Intel 945 chipset. I have another laptop with a pentium M, Intel 915 chipset and a Geforce Go 7800 GTX using the NV 8269 driver with no performance issues and frame rates around at least 200fps on first game test of 3DMark03. The pentium M's don't quite cut it anymore in Windows XP watching Netflix with Silverlight. I've tried Roxio Cineplayer 2.2 and PowerDVD 5.0. Cineplayer plays a video a little longer but is just as "unstable" . Pausing and then resume playing DVD will make computer unresponsive. Sound can be heard but video is stuck where I last left off. I think from here I will try the other NV driver versions and maybe disable the network card in case that's interfering somehow.

512mb ram and ACPI installed. ICH7 I've had Win98SE installation success as I stated in the "slipstreamable Intel infs" topic. It's proved a great laptop for browsing and youtube. But I soon discovered it is crippled when it comes to graphics performance and DVD watching. 3DMark03 shows frame rates are 28fps on first game and 1-3 fps on all the others which is at least 10 times less than expected. DVD watching is like 'plug and pray' as the video will play for a few seconds and then turn to what looks like a barber's pole or freeze system. A couple of settings: I'm using NV8269 video driver which after installing I realized I needed to set the NV PowerMizer to maximum power savings or screen would cut out, go black, and come back on especially when accessing a USB drive (as this requires more power). It needed Rlowe's memory patch with /m option to get it to load completely to Windows-otherwise it would freeze with a black screen about the time you'd expect to see the mouse pointer. And adding the split8mb option would freeze it too. I've seached for tweaking tips and made a few changes to system.ini hoping it would help [vcache] MinFileCache=262144 MaxFileCache=262144 Chunksize=512 Which seemed to buy me a couple more minutes of DVD watching before it would freeze or stutter. Anyone else have this kind of thing happen with NV8269 and ICH7? Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm really impressed with my Dell Inspiron E1505 manufactured mid 2006. I've just updated the cpu to T7400 Core2 Duo and it can do 1080p on youtube with Geforce Go 7300 in 98SE. It had a 1.6 ghz Core Duo which could do 720p. Of course there's no Windows 98 sound driver so I'm using bluetooth speakers.

My 3rd attempt with ICH7. I'm happy to report my Inspiron E1505 is working nicely now. I used the Edit 7/20/13 infs from post #1 since it correctly identifies my sata controller. I ran a normal setup (with ACPI) and PCI steering is now enabled. There's even a free IRQ showing in system properties. I've been trying to manually add Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio as a system device with device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27D8 using the driver from XP. It doesn't want to load or even find the driver but it looks nice in the system properties section .

Search for awlc3028_drv_util. It has the driver from 6/14/2007. The utility is suppose to do WPA2-if you want to use it.

My favorite motherboard was the MSI 7211 ver 4.1. Via chipset, LGA775, sata 1, pentium 4 3.8ghz 800mhz FSB, could output 5.1 surround sound through the 3.5mm jacks. I Used to run 720p youtube videos with the onboard graphics. The cd had all the drivers, including sata. The only bad thing was manufactured around 2006 and suffers from bad capacitors (as previously mentioned). I did a few cap transplants every 6 months or so till it just wouldn't work anymore. I never got to try it with a agp card. oh BTW the bios was limited, overclocking was disable, they made the board as cheap as possible.

sounds like BIOS doesn't like something-with the fact you have to coax it to continue. For what's it's worth, I'm using a dimension 3000 right now in 98se which has pretty close specs to the 4600 but probably a totally different BIOS. Also had to install with "p i" switch otherwise all the resources were taken by ACPI BIOS settings: HD is on primary ide master and cd is secondary master. 256mb aperature. disabled legacy usb I'm using the onboard Intel Extreme graphics 2 with 8mb shared memory. I think I installed with 1gb ram-usually what I do.

I took my 2nd stab at ich7 with my Dell Inspiron E1505(a twin to Inspiron 6400) using the slipstream infs. I made it dual boot with XP so I could eliminate hardware malfunctions. Setup /p i ran smooth. I didn't get any flags in device manager for system devices. No noticeable problems till after installing nv82.69 drivers with the NV go 7300. The sreen would go black, then come back- some kinda memory conflict. I had to change m-pci-e network card memory resource manually as it conflicted with graphics causing garbled screen as soon as it was enabled. Then my utility would recognize my network card but was "disconnected" which means the radio is not enabled and Fn-F2 doesn't turn it on. BIOS doesn't let me turn the card on even though driver is installed correctly. So I began looking in system devices at PCI bus. PCI steering is disabled and miniport something or other was rejected. I plan to do a reinstall to see if I can clarify any of the chipset resources for 98SE prior to loading drivers ect. I had to disable legacy USB support in BIOS otherwise no USB detection. I see pineclould's approach was to view XP's resources for i945 chipset and then insert them in 98SE.
