  1. Why not try it out for yourself? I found this on one of my 2004 floppies. Tried up upload it but was too big. Try here instead postscriptum - must have been useful or I wouldn't have kept the floppy, huh? Come to think of it I think I'll run it myself too NOT IMPRESSED - IT'S HAD ITS DAY!!!!!
  2. In IE settings Auto Config is not ticked but Auto Detect Settings is. I'm on Orange Broadband - billed as 8MB but in practice around 5MB! @oscardog - Don't use a router. (PS - Ai Cymro ydach chi? )
  3. Welcome, Xavi11! Yes, most of here in Britain have heard of Andorra. I think your English is okay and if you're a Win98SE enthusiast you've got a good head on you!
  4. Welcome, ukamed!
  5. Yes, that would be an excellent idea as you've got enough webspace, you could be the hub or gateway - maybe for the keep Win98 alive campaign too. Perhaps, also, other webspace volunteers could act as mirrors or backups! And, perhaps, now that official Win9x/ME support is fading away, the time has come to think of commandeering Win9x/ME and to fall back on our resources on this forum i.e. to not think in terms of just using M$ files and to expand Win88SE2ME so that it's not a matter of just using WinME files but the best of the many homegrown 'unofficial' files here including the KernelX updater?
  6. Didn't know my SpinRite could do that.As for the floppy debate, I would/will never buy a machine without a floppy bay. Floppies have saved my bacon too many times. Nor, by the way, would I have a system without DOS - that too has been a lifesaver.
  7. After I connect my Orange broadband there's a long delay during which time the computer does not seems to be doing anything. Anyone have any insight into this? Thanks greatly.
  8. Mine is a single-user Win98SE machine yet Windows insists on me having an username (PWL file). Now a mysterious new user seems to have emerged, calls himself RNA.PWL. I have this feeling that 'RNA' means something in particular but I can't think what it is. I delete RNA.PWL regularly but it keeps coming back! Anyone have any insight into this phenomenon?
  9. Many thanks, Marius'95. TVDUMPFLAGS= is a ZoneAlarm thing. PHPRC= was installed by the PHP programme. postscriptum - just over the last couple of days something has been wiping clean my autoexec.bat. Can't be a virus or anything like that as I've scanned the machine most thoroughly with AVG, ZoneAlarm, and SpyBot. Any ideas, anyone?
  10. FlashGet is good (as is a very similar programme called GigaGet) but they do throw up errors of this kind because they break downloads up into chunks and these chunks don't always stick together properly, particularly with large files. When I was downloading DirectX the other day it ground to a halt saying that file size had changed.
  11. Is there a norm for autoexec.bat, autoexec.dos, and dosstart.bat and how critical to the optimum performance of Windows are they? It would be interesting to know how others' files are configured and whether any lines are either missing or superfluous ... Here is my autoexec.bat (I have made autoexec.dos and dosstart.bat the same if that makes any difference to anything) :- C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG7\BOOTUP.EXE SET TEMP=C:\windows\temp SET TMP=C:\windows\temp SET TVDUMPFLAGS=8 SET PHPRC=C:\PHP SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\;C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM;C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ROXIOS~1\DLLSHA~1;C:\PERL\SITE\BIN;C:\PERL\BIN mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi) mode con codepage select=850 keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys
  12. This thread has been going a while and become fuzzy so would it be possible to re-encapsulate it all showing only updated and tried-and-tested tweaks?
  13. What about nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! v.1.4.0 ?
  14. Please explain exactly what you mean - this is a Win98SE form.
  15. Thanks for that info, I've wondered about the gold bar longtimes, but if it's an XP thing what's it doing on my Win98SE - IE6 and FireFox, actually? It's not an XP thing. It's browser-specific. IE6 and Firefox both have the bar.So why have I never seen it on IE?
  16. Many thanks for that info, I've wondered about the gold bar thing longtimes, but if it's an XP thing what would it have to do with my Win98SE? PS - Come to think of it, I have seen it when I'm running FireFox.
  17. There is nothing to see apart from the message (which is on the website itself, it's not an error popup) and the last time it happened was when I was installing Adobe Flash from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/. I have also got the 'gold bar' message on the M$ site. I sometimes also get a message something like xxxxx is linked to missing export (or maybe import) kernel32.dll xxxxx" postscriptum - just been back to that site and none of messages showed. I've just updated kernel32 and I'm wondering if that was the 'kernel' of the problem
  18. When I'm installing stuff I occasionally get this message:- 'Important Message: You may need to click the gold bar at the top of the browser window to allow the install' I've yet to see any 'gold bar'. Can any member shed any light on this?
  19. I've said as much before and I know there have been some responses (although they do not seem to have led anywhere positive ) but we really do need an automatic scanner/updater along the lines of the M$ one (but better)! C'mon, you stickified guys, you're all brilliant but your efforts often seem to be overlapping in many ways and this can be confusing to us ordinaries. Form a committee of stickifieds, perhaps in conjunction with the Win98SE Forever campaign, each donate some webspace (I too would be able to provide some webspace), and get that scanner/updater on the road!
  20. Thanks, glock_94! Exactly what I needed
  21. Did what you suggested. I hadn't known you could do that. It seems to have installed although it did ask for the location of some INF file (I didn't make a note of the name) which wasn't anywhere to be found so I had to 'skip' it.
  22. I downloaded the RAR file and unbundled it but it does not seem to contain an installer EXE file.
  23. I've seen a couple of different pro-Win98SE banners in signatures. Anyone got the codes for these?
  24. Being impetuous as I sometimes am I installed the unofficial nVidia82.69 on my 800x600 AOC just for the hell of it! honestly haven't noticed any difference so far.
  25. How would this work when you use a programme like FlashGet as default downloader? Postscriptum - I agree that things like flash and shockwave don't need to be included
