SpyBot is very good but when it found a thing called rmvalid.exe it had a difficulty in removing it. What I'd like to know is whether it's possible to automate the removal of known intruders?

Thanks

There is an auto-installer here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

Why should I partitioning my hard disk drives?
celtish replied to EarthJim's topic in Software Hangout
No, I don' wanna mess around with that partitionin' stuff, too complicated, too volatile. No, I'm happy with backin' stuff up to my second hard drive D. Perhaps I isn't adverturous/foolhardy enough!? -
You're right. I see the logic of it now!

Thanks, guys. These ads are still irritating but at least I now know what they are!

I have noticed of late that certain words in posts are double-underlined and that hovering over them triggers a floating box containing inane information from an outfit called 'vibrant'. Do these have to be there?? They are very annoying!

Tried to install 1.73 but didn't quite work. I did have 1.9 installed but now I've ended up with a sort of hybrid which calls itself 1.8.6.1008! One day when my machine's not so fragile I'll have another go at 1.73 ...

I'd try it but there is no version for Win98SE

The problems I've found with the recent versions of FlashGet is that (1) it misbehaves with IE6 - the URL goes blank and gets dissociated (2) the 'new folder' box keeps cropping up whilst it is downloading and (3) it won't retain the icon settings

AutoDMA - automatically sets DMA access to HDs
celtish replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Installed it. On first reboot it came up with an error message, something like 'explorer caused a fault in comctl' but no subsequent problems with it. -
Guys, thanks. The problem arises in safe mode and normal mode, albeit a little better in safe mode. Eventually I had to run it overnight in order to get finished. I shall read up on the links. (@forummaster - there seems to be something amiss with your settings - where I arrive I get the message ".... cannot open (page URL)". Also, many keywords are hyperlinked to a commercial outfit called liveupdate so an irritating box with fatuous information comes up. The affected words are double-underlined)

Many thanks for the info

Just been running defrag (the updated ME version) and I had to give it up as a bad job. It's restarting itself every 20 seconds or so and when it had crawled up to 89% I found that after restarting that time it had rolled right back to 53%! What accounts for this kind of behaviour?
-
Ah, yes. Thanks, guys. I don't use laptops and I've never knowingly used the 'advanced' power settings so I've no idea why 'power meter' was running. My machine is strangely powered - diagnostics have for many moons insisted that there is no battery!
-
As far as I'm aware the dx9.0c version I've installed is June 2007. Did I do wrong - and is this why I get prompted to re-install .net framework* - and if so how can I roll it back to the December 2006 version?(* I did once install .net framework but I thought I'd got rid of it yonks ago)
-
Anyone know where Power Meter" comes from? I've never come across it before.

Why is my machine continually 'rattling its cage'? (Win98SE)
celtish replied to celtish's topic in Windows 9x/ME
@ Lee - Thanks - I'll give 95 00 00 00 a try. Hope it sorts out the CD drives at the same time! -
Why is my machine continually 'rattling its cage'? (Win98SE)
celtish replied to celtish's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I am not worried about the floppy drive being checked when rebooting - that's a very useful feature for getting out of a few scrapes - it's this ongoing 'msdos compatibilty mode' activity that worries me because it creates unnecessary and long delays and makes life too complicated! In case it's relevant here are my main SYSTEM.INI settings. All I need to know is how to exit 'ms compatibility mode'! Helpp! -
Why is my machine continually 'rattling its cage'? (Win98SE)
celtish replied to celtish's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thank you each for valuable comment. I went into SysProperties > Performance and saw that all removable drives (A, E and F) were running in "MSDos compatibility mode". Didn't have a clue what that boiled down to so looked up help. Not helpful - in fact I have found that most 'help' files are a waste of space. No intelligible instructions at all on how to remove this compatibility mode. So looked up the removable drives. Saw that I had 'DMA' (?) ticked against each. Unticked them, rebooted. Problem not solved. Next port of call the File System tabs. Saw that 'Enable write-behind (?) cacheing on all removable drives' was enabled. Unticked it and rebooted. So problem still not solved! So further comments welcome! -

Why is my machine continually 'rattling its cage' i.e. checking through the removable drives incessantly. I cannot do much without a noisy and lengthy delay whilst the machine goes through the full gamut of removable drives. It affects most M$ and third-party software. For example when I empty the recycle bin it checks through every removable drive, A, E, and F - even though they are of course usually empty - before completing the task. The drives are sometimes rattling for ages. I have checked the BIOS (American MegaTrends) and there is nothing untoward there. Any ideas, anyone? -
So what if you get locked out? Windows sometimes doesn't recognise or find CDs etcetera which are essential to the application you're trying to run. But it always finds the floppy.

@ MDGx - On booting on, as systray is loading I've recently been getting a momentary black screen followed by a judder before loading resumes. I've made things easy on the Desk Manager by removing multiple users and multiple desktops options yet this phenomenon persists.

D'you mean autoexec.bat? I don't have an autostart tab.
