  1. (1) Certain programmes won't run, telling me I must have MSInstaller. When I run the MSInstaller setup it tells me it is already installed. I obviously first need to uninstall such vestiges of MSinstaller as remain. Where in the registry can I find it so I can slay the beast? (2) Some of the threads have become so extended that they have become unintelligible. Can we campaign for some of these threads to be truncated and logicated??
  2. 1. Just before I crash I get error messages implicating EXPLORER and KERNEL32. And looking into CAD I often find that WINOLDAP is running. What the heck is WINOLDAP and how can I send it packing? 2. What are the relative ups and downs for ASP, PHP, and HTML? I've always used HTML for my web pages but I wonder if using ASP or PHP would present any advantages? 3. I've been trying to install an interactive wiki (like wikipaedia) on my virtual server Easyspace. However, I cannot proceed because the server's MySQL and PHP are not new enough. I spoke to Easyspace but they couldn't help. I've got recent versions of these programmes on my machine so would it somehow be possible to upload these to the server so that they work? I tried putting them in the cgi-bin but that didn't do the trick.
  3. Ahah! Gotit! Thanks!
  4. (1) When I go to alter stuff in Multimedia (Control Panel) I am told to do it through 'Device Manager' in the Control Panel. But I do not have a Device Manager in the CP! I've do not seem to have a CPL for Device Manager - how do I get hold of it? (2) What is URI (uniform resource ?indicator?). I was recently asked to enter the URI on an online form and had no idea what my URI was .....
  5. The only file type I've got left in Tweak UI's 'Add New' section is 'Documents on Desktop' (which I've disabled). I've tried dropping in html, txt, doc, files, etc. but it says it cannot add them to the menu so when I right-click on the Desktop the only available options are Folder and Shortcut. Anyone have a fix? Anyone know the location of the relevant files in RegEdit?
  6. My vote is still for METAPAD. Unlimited capacity and all sorts of options for technies. But what I like most about it is that typing in an url or a mailto automatically makes it into a usable hyperlink! btw, where is wiSHmaKeR?
  7. Okay, done it. No Win98SE programme upgrades (early days?). What it seems to have done is tacked another line i.e.SHELL=COMMAND.COM /E:4096 /Pinto CONFIG.SYS in C:\ , didn't touch the CONFIG.SYS in C:\WINDOWS\ (which I don't think should be there in WINDOWS anyway). Slight EXPLORER error message whilst installing. A file called CONFIG.SYZ seems to have appeared in C:\ ... anything to do with AutoPatcher98? I've never heard of SYZ files before. Keep up the good work!
  8. ... Yes, yes you do ...These progress reports are excellent news! Roll on v.2.0 !
  9. there are TWO fixed REGEDIT.EXE files. One from the site MDGx mentions and the one Tihiy made a few years ago (it was a modified ME Regedit.exe file that can work under Win98) The WinME Regedit.exe file has a Favorites option and the ability to memorize what registry key that was last edited after exiting RegEdit. The 4.90.3000 Regedit.exe file is no longer available from the RapidShare site (I'll have to tell MDGx about this and send him the 4.90.3000 RegEdit package)Replace the Regedit.exe file with either of the "fixed" regedit.exe files. There's a TweakUI option on the Repair tab that allows you to Repair RegEdit. not sure if that'll work.It is the 4.90.3000 version I'm using since yonks. I am right now looking up the MDGx link you cited.
  10. I took the advice and installed regmon and filemon (they are now phased out by their writer, BTW) but they're not helping, too techny for my simple brain! Waiting for icons to open is like waiting for paint to dry.....
  11. As far as sweeteners are concerned, aspartamine (which is a common ingredient in commercial products) is lethal. Producers will say it's safe but they would, wouldn't they. My ex-wife's sister was always getting seriously ill when she ate out because of undeclared aspartamine in their food. As far as I can see, fruit sugars like fruisiana are among the relatively safe and have a low glycenic index (GI)
  12. JV16 and my machine have never got on but Easy Cleaner, Reg Seeker and Crap Cleaner are in use. As is CleanSweep and Registry Drill (which is an excellent compacter. Would like to do some manual cleaning too but how can I do that when RegEdit is out of service!
  13. Thanks for this info about ORI files, I had been wondering what they were for. I recently deleted shell32.ori through my ignorance. In view of what you say I shall now back up kernel32, shell32, advapi32, gdi32 and user as ori files as an insurance!
  14. @ ShadeTreeLee - user.dat/system.dat 1289KB/7849KB. @ submix8c - Yes, good thinking. I'll check out MDGx.
  15. @ soporific An auto like that would certainly be useful but I've recently had a lot of grief with autoexec.bat - it periodically wipes itself clean meaning that when next rebooting the machine just flounders. See this topic at http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=659718 . A respondent wrote me a .vbs file which would reinstate its contents from autoexec.bak if it blanked out again. It must be working because this particular problem hasn't arisen since. Would the .vbs file be compatible with your proposed fix in AP? And what if AP floundered during install and left the autoexec.bat in its 'REM' state? (Sounds convoluted I know but d'you understand what I'm saying?)(BTW, what does 'ES' mean??)
  16. Herewith (sorry, can't find PM sender) Keep up the good work, you're a genius at work!
  17. Can't go into regedit any more because it won't close down on demand. Just stays put, freezes everything up and forces a reboot. Any fix, anyone?
  18. I've recently found fateback to be a pretty good free host. Each page carries an advert but it is only an unobtrusive strip as the top. The only minus is that the FTP is pretty naff and needs a little persistence. Also, the name 'fateback' does not carry adverse connotation. I've found that most free hosts push the fact that they're free by using the word 'free' as part of their domain name!
  19. Just installed your 29/5/2007 rewrite, went smoothly, no hiccups at all
  20. I've only just installed the 6.54 update - is it worthwhile to install the 6.55 update or will there be a lot of duplication? postscriptum - please see my post earlier today which includes the log files on the three earlier version I installed Post-postscriptum - I went ahead and installed the 6.55 and got a bundle of problems including 'explorer' error messages, 'cannot find drive C' as well as the usual 'out of environmental space' message at the head of every DOS window
  21. Just a note from a non-techny who's becoming increasingly confused by the multiplicity of patches, upgrades, and previews and by the difficulty in finding clear download links for this, that, and the other! - It's becoming increasingly difficult to see the wood for the trees. How about clearing out all the deadwood from the topic pages and just having a straightforward thread with all the links and explanation in the one place? - postscriptum - when I visited your website I was tizzied further to find that the links there referred to WinXP and the like... HEEELLLPPPPPP!!!! - post-postscriptum - I have now tracked down what seem to be the three main files i.e and have installed them in what appears to be chronological sequence and am attaching the three report files for your interest- I got a lot of error messages including some implicating explorer and kernel32 and I notice that all the DOS windows were headed 'out of environmental space' whatever that means. (BTW, the installs knocked out my recycle bin ico and reinstated the old-style icon) - However AP now seems to be installed and we shall see how it goes!
  22. It's happened yet again! autoexec.bat wiped completely clean and my machine floundering on reboot! I was wondering ... Would it be possible to make a floppy which could fix things when the rebooting went awry? Or, perhaps, an onboard file of some kind which would auto check for a blank autoexec.bat and fix it before the reboot? Any comments, anyone, and hopefully someone would know how either of these options could be implemented?
  23. How about The Win98 Club - Accept No Substitutes with an ALT of "The last of a breed" ?
  24. Are you by chance using any "tweaks" from WinME on your Win98SE? WinME does not like anything in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS... those setting are stored in the Registry under WinME and the two aforementioned files are "wiped" on startup... @ submix8c - I must have umpteen WinME files thanks to MDGx and other stalwarts on these forums!@ Fredledingue - I shall try that @ All - Thanks for your fascinating insights!
