What is UPDATE.SYS for? Sorry to appear so dim but what's been said in this thread so far is a little above my head. I've got 'AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 1733 Mhz MAX: 3000 Mhz' on my machine'

"...still defaults back to 640x480..." Yes I have that kind of problem, too. My preference is 800x600 but my machine has a helluva time finding the display adapter (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with GP8X/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! v.1.4.0) and monitor (AOC) and still defaults back to 640x480 from time to time and when it goes into Safe Mode. (My system and motherboard are AMD Athlon XP 1733 MHz and K7VT2 2.00) What's going on .....?

My version is 81.98 and I thought this was the last Win98SE - compatible version.

... Ideally something that is akin to M$ WinUpdate i.e. a dedicated site which scans your machine to ascertain needed updates ... I can donate some webspace if that would be helpfull ...

This problem disappeared but later came back. What am I doing wrong??

Yes, I'm using NortonWorks2000 but only the CleanSweep part of it. The rest of it is just too meandering. Before seeing this topic I had just opened a new thread on this subject. You can find it here:- http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=96020

Not to get so petulant my friend! Mdgx and Soporific are doing a fine job but we're talking about something different so get your thinking head screwed on.

NOW HERE'S THE THING ... Since M$ has disowned WinUpdate the time has come for some Einstein on this forum to kick off an unofficial WinUpdate! Any takers.....

Noted. In control panel 'Network' I have Client for Windows and Windows Family Logon. Don't really understand the difference between the two. I also have Speedtouch broadband and Dialup and Dialup with VNP support. (Recall that I am a single-user without a LAN) Unfortunately that link wasn't helpful - Microsoft don't want to know about Win9x anymore! I'm running DirectX (April 2007) and IE6. NOW HERE'S THE THING ... Since M$ has disowned WinUpdate the time has come for some Einstein on this forum to kick off an unofficial WinUpdate! Any takers.....

There was a time when this forum was just about Gape's service pack but now there are zillions of service packs emerging - time to rename the forum, methinks, to reflect its more extensive nature.

This is a very strange problem and I have discovered that it is erratic, it comes and goes. I can now get in to Passwords and Users (none but myself, in fact) but I later had certain access problems with CleanSweep - see separate thread - which have now been resolved. At present the problem crops up with Windows Update which now brings up either (1) an 'Administrators only' page or (2) a page claiming that I am on a V6 machine. Apart from what has been mentioned above everything else including RegEdit is perfectly functional and there are no viruses, trojans, or whatever.

Windows Update web site no longer functing for win98?
celtish replied to 98 Guy's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Or worse .... It won't let you in because it claims you are not the 'Administrator' -
Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
celtish replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Just installed AutoPatcher 1.95 PR2 (March 20th, 2007) from SoftPaedia, took best part of an hour even using FlashGet! But the programme ... ingenious, fascinating! As you know it includes two options for WinUpdate Fix. With the first it was rapidly hunting or looping between V4 and V6. With the second it just brought me back to the 'Administrators Only' screen. Not to worry ..... (Post scriptum. An incidental effect of installing AutoPatcher is that it has installed WM9 properly for the first time in months, previously WM9 was not tenable on this machine because trying to use it just froze up Desktop every time.) -
I have been using the popular CleanSweep programme for yonks (ever since the Quarterdeck days) and generally found it to be an excellent uninstaller and cleaner-up (or should that be 'upcleaner'?) but found a few problems with it of late. CleanSweep in now incorporated into Norton Works or somesuch and is no longer available as a stand-alone although it is possible to hive it off and use it without having to install the full works. I had been using CleanSweep2000 for a long while and recently it threw up a couple of problems. The first was when error messages mentioning MAIN started popping up. This was more of an irritation than anything because the error window could just be shifted to one side without affecting the running of the programme. But the second problem was more serious. Right-clicking on an EXE file or EXE shortcut, which used to bring up the uninstall dialogue brought up an error message saying it could not be used because I was 'not logged onto the network' (there is in fact no network other than the Internet) and I could go no further with it. I uninstalled it and got hold of a CleanSweep2002 and installed that. Worked fine except that I found it did not have as much functionality as the 2000 version. I therefore reinstalled the 2000 version on top of the 2002 version and found that the full functionality was restored and the two problems mentioned in para 2 above had gone. All well and good. What I am seeking now is some input from other CleanSweep users. Looking for valid links to dedicated CleanSweep forums is nigh on impossible (99.9% of the links are to do with roadsweeping and the like and Norton's own Q&A/Support is last.

Thanks but no, even the EXE file didn't do it. When I tried to actvate it I got the message not a valid Win32 application! Must be something awry with my machin ..... PS. How's this for a turnup. I don't get redirected to the V6 site any more. I get a message telling me only the administrator can update. (no admin, just me on a one-user paid-for machine which should do what I tell it ..... but doesn't!)

Downloaded the ZIp file ... but it was EMPTY!

It's a great idea, the MegaStickies List but may I make a suggestion ... Would it be possible to 'date' the items in the list so that we can see which ones are the newest?
-
Actually, I beat you to it. No arguing about it, you guys. Else I'll have a sticky about it.
-
You're right about 'mix-and-match'! I went through the main nVidia files and switched some of them to different versions I had in store and it seems to have solved that problem. Thanks for the insight.
-
Can you suggest which ones need to be pruned? That would add something concrete to your concerns, 'cause at the moment its abstract ... in fact completely and totally abstract. There's a book you should read --- "The Iron Heel" by Jack London -- that will cure you of speaking in abstraction quick smart. Highly recommended. and just out of interest, what screen resolution are you normally working with? If you're still at 1024 x 768 or below then of course its too many stickies ... Wow! Gosh!! Omigawd!!! Didn't mean to get your hackles up!!!It's 600x800 AAMOI, no problem except when I'm trying to read one of those super-marionation websites which reach from west to east.....
-
Could the number of stickies be pruned? Most of them are good - even though many of the contributors are duplicating each other's efforts and sometimes working at cross purposes. Can't you get your heads together and perhaps pool your efforts, guys??

I've got two problems cropped up of late since re-installing Win98SE. Can anyone help? 1. Every time I boot into the Desktop I get the New Hardware Wizard twice asking me for the location of 'Unknown Devices' and refusing to continue on into the full Desktop until I cancel. I've tried various uninstalls but it always comes back. MSInfo32 and System can't see it. 2. When left-clicking on the Desktop (to get into Properties, for instance) I get the message "Message to DEVS: Shell: Calling root key before nview.dll is loaded" (nview is part of nVidia)

I was surprised to find that when I tried to open certain files e.g. Users and Passwords in Control Panel I was refused saying that the 'administrator' had restricted access. I am a one-user machine (Win98SE) and don't understand this. How do I put this 'administrator' in his place?
