  1. From time to time I get the "no dial tone" message when trying to connect. It usually sorts itself after a reboot - but what causes it and how can I avoid it in future? The physical connections are okay. I've got 56k DUN connections and broadband -Intel HaM Data Fax 56k Modem (internal modem) Wanadoo Broadband (external green Alcatel Speedtouch modem) - and the problem can arise with either. I'm running Win98SE.
  2. Tarun, hiya - I'm a sort of tinkering newbie and being an inveterate downloader I downloaded your "VMM" and "WinPatcher" programmes. Could you tell me what they will do for me? PS - I do have the Win98 files off the CD copied to options\cabs (which is nominated as my default installation location so other files get added to the folder over course of time).
  3. I don't know if this is a problem with SP2Beta2 or not. I have already installed it successfully twice before but on this occasion it said it could not find APPS.INF in the INF directory. I searched and APPS.INF was in fact there. And also I don't know if there is any connection but I've lately been getting a lot of messages like 'XXX caused a fault in COMMCTRL.DLL'
  4. I suggest replacing windows notepad with metapad.exe. It's a straight drop-in replacement, just change its name to notepad.exe and slip it into the windows directory. It's can handle large volumes and is very versatile and also shows URL addresses as hyperlinks, very useful. PS - Incorporating explore-from-here (and removing explore) and move-to and copy-to in the right-click menu would also be good.
  5. That fixed the problem straightaway. I'm very happy with the service pack and I would like to make a donation but could I use PayPal?
  6. Metapad is simple yet highly configurable plus it hyperlinks stuff on the page and it's a straightforward slot-in replacement for notepad. I've used it for a long time and I'm very happy with it
