  1. Me too. For a while Microsoft was convinced I was on Linux or something. Back to normal now.
  2. You're right but actually just as anxious as frustrated! We talking Win98SE here, right? My machine always auto-reboots into Desktop albeit slowly because I have all the DOS windows showing up first each time. (Don't know if this is native Windows behaviour of whether it's because of some third-part programme e.g. X-Setup.) Great programme!
  3. Tried to download the v.1.20 zip files but all I'm getting is the file called index.php or a reference to http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=at...st&id=16361 !
  4. AutoPatcher! Wow, what an enterprise! Took me AGES to download, even with Flashget using ten jets, it started fine but the server was getting really slow and exhausted towards the end! When I came to install it I thought I'd be sitting at the machine all night, all that rebooting and updating! It got really scary at times!! But a really excellent thing you've done
  5. Excellent as always but why does it always install things with W98, WIN, 256, and *W98.* extensions? They don't seem to have any useful function. I am using a programme called WinPatcher. Could this be useful if incorporated in 98SE2ME? Also, would it be possible to have metapad as the notepad?
  6. VER doesn't work for me but WINVER does. Also, if you've installed 98SE2ME the OS version shown will be Millenium not Win98SE.
  7. You can also download Gape's SP2.1a through this link: http://www.celticsurf.net/easyhost/dropsite/gape.html
  8. Right, that's what I'm asking about - how does Wordpad compare to the replacement Notepads? I don't use Notepad, I just use Wordpad. What do the replacement Notepads offer that Wordpad doesn't?Your aim should be to try out the various replacement notepads and see which one suits you best. Checking through this thread will give you a good idea of what is out there.
  9. Maximus Decim Cumulative Update Plus! ver.3.0 for Windows 98SE - Good one but rapidshare is a pain!
  10. The basic differences are (1) Wordpad has a greater capacity than the standard Windows notepad (2) Wordpad text can be formatted whereas the standard notepad cannot Note that some of the third-party notepads (e.g. metapad) have capabilities beyond those of the standard notepad.
  11. Somebody explain something, please. If CHKDSK is so last why does Win9x always install it? And, in any case, when CHKDSK is opened all it does is display a DOS window instructing you to use SCANDISK. CHKDSK appears to be useless and pointless so why is it there?
  12. In view of Gape's prolonged absence from the forum I think we need to come to some determination about Gape's Unofficial Service Pack. There have been numerous enquiries about him but nobody seems to have an answer. My belief is that Gape has moved on to pastures new. I'm not in any way blaming him for this in any way. His contribution in introducing and developing the Win98SE service packs has been brilliant and magnificent and I wish him well with his future activities. But I move that now MGDx be asked to pick up on the service packs from where Gape left off (i.e. with SP2.1a) so that we don't lose the momentum.

  14. Congratulations! It's well deserved!
  15. It was originally posted by wiSHmaKeR on the following page on Dec 12th 2005http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=433007 but he has not been heard from since so it's impossible to know whether he planned an update. His download link to http://www.mytempdir.com/314103 is no longer extant but eidenk has put up a new download link
  16. I would be prepared to host the *updated* version of wiSHmaKeR's file if he would send it to me.
  17. P2P and torrents already hold much of the software that ever existed... don't worry about availability Are you able to supply the URLs for these?
  18. Thanks to Gape's 'unofficial' Service Packs and MDGx's W98SE2ME patches the Win98SE system itself can be updated and even improved upon. However, more and more of the programme makers are dropping Win98SE-compatability from updated versions of their software. This makes it important to preserve older, compatible versions of these programmes. I would suggest that there is need for a permanent 'repository' for these older versions. 'Witts End Oldies', 'Silly Dog', and 'Old Version' host many of these earlier versions but they are of course limited and we need a more comprehensive repository. Perhaps the necessary bandwidth to accomodate all this could be by using peer-to-peer or torrent?
  19. None. Windows 98 SE OS identifies itself as 4.10.2222 or 4.10.2222 A, depending on which diagnostics/detection tools are used. That's because different system files either display the A or do not, when called upon to identify the OS version/release/edition/build. More info: http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm http://www.mdgx.com/win.htm For example, if u right-click on My Computer desktop icon and select Properties, you'll see something like this: http://www.mdgx.com/ver95.gif MGDx That means Win98 SE OS will always be 4.10.2222 [with or without the A] no matter which/how many updates/(hot)fixes/patches/SPs/replacements/etc you install. And that means you will only be allowed to install Win98 SE patches/(hot)fixes/SPs, even if u install [or not] 98SE2ME or individual ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/etc files. That's because u can't replace the OS core files, like: krnl386.dll, krnl386.exe.Petr My System Properties comes up with Windows98SE whereas 'Run winver' (as suggested by MDGx) comes up with Windows Millenium! How come so? I have installed W98SE2ME and Gape's latest SP.
  20. Any idea when the next update will be out?
  21. That's something I'd been wondering and worrying about but I found W98SE2ME.EXE worked okay. BTW, my diagnostics come up with build 2222 or sometimes 2222A - what's the difference?
  22. Rapidshare is a dead loss. Major Geeks is better but that too is a little convoluted and difficult to get to work. I would go for SoftPaedia - never had any problems with it.
  23. The latest QT installers don't work with Win98SE, the latest viable one seems to be QuickTime Alternative v.1.61.
