  1. No, it's an ordinary desktop machine and it's the ordinary CD bay (not R/W nor DVD) What I was wondering was whether Compaq used difference specifications from everyone else?
  2. My CD bay wouldn't come out automatically I had to try to prize it open and twisted it up. My son tried to fit another bay (I think it was out of a Compaq machine) but it would not fit in properly so I asked him to put the old damaged one back. It is marked "52Xmax". I didn't realize that CD bays came in different sizes. Where can I get a 52Xmax from, anyone?
  3. [PassingBy] Thanks muchly for all that valuable info. Very gratefully obliged.
  4. My machine is only 5 or 6 years old but it already seems to be past its sell-by date. (Can't get any sound for the past 6 months and it has a few other quirks. ) Regrettably it seems I must replace it and this is where I need some good advice, if you please. I don't want to buy a new machine because they don't seem to have many of the facilities that I consider essential e.g. proper floppy drive bay. (I also don't wish to install anything other than my present Win98SE because for instance I want to retain full DOS capability, having DOS has saved my bacon many a time.) I use the Internet a lot (upload and download a lot), I like to listen to music (but don't want to OTT sound systems, I play around with graphics, I don't play games. I need to retain the drives I've got, A, fixed drives C and D, CD drives E and F. (Actually the E drive is for making CDs). My idea is either to buy a decent machine from a computer fair or whatever or to buy a customized machine. (Where would I get these made?) And then to replace the C and D drives, using the ones from my present machine so that I retain all the programmes and settings. Would this be what would in practice happen? Rather a tall order, I suppose, that's why I need some REALLY GOOD ADVICE! Please help if you can! Thanks! Here are what appear to be my present machine's specs:-
  5. Help! My post (above) is not showing up as 'latest post' in the summary. Latest poster is shown at Tarun when he said he was moving topic elsewhere ....... that was ages ago........
  6. I too am having trouble with MSFN. When I come in from an email notification link or otherwise it is very slow loading and I eventually get the message This happens a lot, when I log in the problem does not recur. This has got to be a problem with the MSFN software!
  7. Thanks, fastlanephil! I'll work through that list
  8. Strangely enough I seem to have the same problem, happens on all wikis and I think it may apply where PHP is involved too
  9. Hi, if you're still looking and I'm not violating any site policy, I've still got a new Maxtor 10 GByte 7200 RPM still sealed in the anti-static wrapper I got on a Warranty Return a couple of years ago for a Quantum, plus a couple 10 GByte Quantum Fireballs 5400/7200 rpm used only for backup & stored. I'll gladly take the 10GB Maxtor (plus another Maxtor if you have). Name your price and let me have your PayPal details or your email. Hold on a mo - you are in the US and I am in Brit, does that create a problem? Thanks.
  10. I got the message "Unable to write to drive C" on a blue screen after rebooting. I restarted again and all appeared to be fine. Why, why, why?
  11. @ MDGx Thanks for updating the nv82.69 programme again. My machine now loads fine, without the blackout and judder! Tweaked Unofficial NVIDIA Display Driver 82.69 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME: http://www.mdgx.com/files/nv8269.php NV8269.EXE [14.5 MB, multilingual]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/NV8269.EXE
  12. I too got that message after oleup.exe which I installed independently in the past - I noted this on another thread, I think it was one of MDGx's threads. In my case the 'application which could not start' was RoboForm
  13. Is this a case of "very old" mobo ?'mobo'?
  14. Taking the original post at face value I re-installed .Net v.2. 0.50727 (My machine wasn't exactly top-ho so I thought not much to lose by trying it again.) I'm no techny but my machine does seem to be running a little better.I see that DotNet v.1 has been mentioned here on this thread a few times. What is the diff between DotNet v.1 and the DotNet v.2.0.50727 which I imstalled??
  15. Thanks, all you guys. There have been some enlightening and constructive comments here (and of course the usual one or two inevitable, unhelpful 'too bad, feller, you're in the s***, get over it' posts!).There are a couple of things in particular I need to follow up on: What is LBA, what does it do, where do I get software which does it? And what is the best HDD 'make' (manufacturer) for Win98SE? Again, thanks guys.

  17. My C: drive harddisk is 10GB and my D: harddisk is 20GB and I don't go in for partitioning. All that suits me fine. My problem is that I detest those monstrous mega harddisks they are making these days but I'm finding it difficult to find 10/20GB disks any longer. With a view to possible future breakdowns, does anyone know where to obtain them?

  19. The only reference I have in autoexec.bat is SET TVDUMPFLAGS=8. Did you delete this without ill-effects and do you have more than this in your autoexec - what delete line do you have in there?@ Rick Chavin - Yes, I use those versions. In fact the later versions do not work with Win98SE
  20. I know that 'tvdebug.log' has been a pain for Zone Alarm users for yonks. It kicks in every so often when a Desktop or Quick Launch icon is clicked on and freezes up the machine completely. The only way I've found of coping with it is to force-reboot into DOS and then run ScanDisk or Langa's Clean9x. The dialogue first come up with an error on tvdebug then goes on to say the numbers on the drive are being misreported. Has anyone here had similar problems and if so have they found a way of curbing tvdebug without having to repeatedly reboot? (tvdebug cannot be deleted in Windows mode.) I have been though the Zone Alarm forum many times (http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/) but nobody has explained it or come up with a proper remedy. postscriptum - I've just noticed other threads to do with Zone Alarm which the MSFN search did not detect beforehand. And not many are happy with Zone Alarm. Should I delete it and use something else Win98SE-compatible (ZA no longer makes new versions for Win98SE) and if so what and where can it be found.
  21. In the interests of wider information I am posting here the latest email spams I have come across. At the moment there are many arriving in the following format:- The most popular email addresses are:-greatoffers@ specialsavers@ return*@ (*could be a number here)
  22. Whenever I install OLEUP.EXE I find that after rebooting OLEDLG.DLL has disappeared and I have to replace it from my backup pool. (Roboform won't load without OLEDLG.)
  23. Just installed sesp30a1.exe. No problems except that it seems to have knocked out the new My Computer and Recycle Bin icons. Rapidshare is pretty last (english slang for pretty hopeless) so as a service to fellow members it can be downloaded from here Test Version sesp30a1-en.exe
