  1. I'm a registered user of CompuPic Pro. There are comparable freeware alternatives like XnView and FastStone, which are excellent, but CompuPic Pro is faster under Windows 9x. Not only that, but CompuPic's image editing features are higher quality. Each program has it's strong points though. I have all three installed. I've also registered some cheap $10-$20 image viewers, none worth mentioning though, as I doubt they would be of interest to anyone. I have a lot of nature photography that I shoot, so I needed the best I could get for Windows ME.
  2. Well, as far as number 4 goes, it would be interesting to know what's available in terms of Firefox 2 add-ons... because as it stands now, there's no way of digging through all the extensions and finding JUST the Firefox 2 ones. Not without a lot of time consuming work. For example, I like the Firefox 2 add-on that enables new tabs to open your homepage. Now, I would have found that a lot sooner if it had been conveniently listed under "Firefox 2 Add ons." Just sayin' The windows 9x community needs more consolidation. Things are floating here, there, and everywhere... Consolidating Win9x information, making it easier to attain, was pretty much the gist of my post. But thanks for replying.
  3. Cool, thanks for sharing. I might add some of your Google addresses to my list, if they're not on it already. I had no idea about these "hosts" files until today. Learn something new everyday. Along with ClamWin, keeping my "hosts" file up-to-day will be my next line of defense for Win9x.
  4. Under Windows ME, the sample host file is called "C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS.SAM" All you have to do is copy that huge list from above, the one with all the 127.0.0.1 numbers, into a file in your Windows directory and call it "Hosts" with no extension. So far, it seems to be working. Because I notice a slight 1 or 2 second lag when first clicking on websites (it's probably checking the list). In order to test it out, I visited some of the websites listed in the hosts file, and apparently the ad blocking appears to be working! I guess it works afterall. So far so good. In summary, here's what you need: (1) This List: http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/serverlist.php?showintro=0;hostformat=hosts (2) Copy all the ^above numbers into a file called "hosts" (no extension) in your C:\WINDOWS directory. Lastly, another tutorial http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/quick-tip-block-unwanted-sites-using-the-windows-hosts-file/
  5. This website appears to have a current list of blocked ad content, http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/index.php <p> There's also this link: https://easylist.adblockplus.org/en/
  6. Here's mine: (1) A user-friendly way of maintaining a list of Image URL's to be blocked for SeaMonkey 1.1.19, Firefox 2.0.0.20, K-Meleon 1.5.4, and Netscape 9 -- for getting rid of most advertisements (2) Windows ME Service Pack or update of any kind :-) (3) Master list of all known KernelEx Compatible Programs, neatly organized by category, and available in one convenient location (4) A master list of all known Firefox 2 compatible add-ons or extensions, available in one convenient location (5) When using ClamWin, the ability to turn off loading in the system tray on every startup -- in order to conserve memory and only run the program when I need to. (6) The discovery of more KernelEx compatible programs, and the proper maintainance of KernelEx Master List (7) Probably more, but it's bed time. *** Number 1 has been solved *** See this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170825-current-list-of-advertisement-image-urls-to-block/ What are yours?
  7. Here's the link for their "host" file, a huge list of advertisement servers to be blocked, http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/serverlist. php?showintro=0;hostformat=hosts Here's a good article, best I've read about using Host file to block images for ads: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/block-websites-using-hosts-file/
  8. Okay, on the websites listed below they mention "hosts" files that you can copy into your Windows directory, which is just a big list of blocked servers, and I suppose this is the only way I know of blocking ads under Win9x... except for righting clicking on every ad for the rest of time.
  9. It will come faster than you think... I remember when Windows ME/98 support ended in 2006, it only took two years before all vendors dropped 9x support completely. AVG 7.5 was the last one in 2008 for WinME. The only thing that still works is ClamWin. I think Windows XP will attain security through Obsolescence quicker than people realize. But thats, like, uh, just my opinion, man.
  10. If you want to play around on old computers, than you could get anything from a 80386 cpu, 80486, Pentium I, Pentium II, Pentium III............. with a 386 computer you can run DOS and Windows 3.1. With a 486 you can run DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95. With a Pentium I you can run DOS, Windows 3.1, and every Win9x OS. Pentium 2 and 3 you can run Win9x.
  11. Just find an old pentium 1, 2, or 3 computer (something with 900 MHz or less CPU). Computer manufacturers never designed anything beyond the above specs to support Windows 9x... at least not officially... and not without "issues." For example, my computer was designed for Windows ME use only. Since Windows ME was the last version of 9x, I would assume that any newer, faster computers, WERE NOT designed for Windows ME. Hence, I wouldn't bother installing Windows ME on anything more than, say, a Pentium 3. I'm sure there are plenty of "power users" on this board who have Win9x installed on better machines... but they also have a higher tolerance for troubleshooting. Me, not so much. For instance, before I get a computer, I check online to read the user manual and see what operating system the computer was designed for. If it wasnt' designed for the OS I plan to use, then I don't get that computer. Saves me trouble.
  12. Need more details about your setup please. If your're trying to install Windows 98 in a "virtual box" than it's no wonder the installtion didn't work correctly. As the installation program wouldn't know what it was dealing with... for example, newer hardware you're trying to install onto. I've never attempted one of these "virtual box" installations of Win9x. On the other hand, I've installed many a Windows 9x onto the proper hardware which it was designed for, without using virtual boxes of any sort. Some questions: what kind of Windows 98 CD do you have? Is it a genuine installation, or an upgrade, or one of those HP or Dell ones? What sort of computer? RAM specs, hard drive specs, CPU specs? What operating system are you running a "virtual box" from? You leave out way too much information for me to even guess what the problem could be.
  13. I agree with DrugWash 100%. The personal computer won't be "your" personal computer in probably another 5 years... not when "your" data is saved in someone else's cloud. Eventually you'll probably have to pay a liscence fee or bill just to have the ability to open and save your own files. Because they'll be stored elsewhere... anywhere but your own computer. Oh well, at least they're not forcing people yet to own computers. I can still live with my books and non-trackable technology. That's another thing... E-Books! You're not only going to have to pay for the books, you'll have to pay for the electricity to read those books. Of course, they'll probably need you to "upgrade" whatever bookreader every 5 years. You know, to keep up with the Jones'. "All is vanity." -Ecclesiastes.
  14. LAST -- FREE -- Image Pro 1.04 http://www.download-central.ws/Win32/Apps/I/ImagePro/
  15. LAST - FREE - Monkey Zip 2.0.1.7 http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/gp13_w95.html scroll until you see "MonkeyZip" *edit* Monkeyzip seems to crash a lot. Maybe it's just my computer. But it doesn't seem to like Windows ME. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another zipping program: Ccy HahaZip v3.0.1 http://www.filewatcher.com/m/hhzv30.exe.1351419-0.html
  16. Point taken. Somebody should start a thread: Apps That Aren't Supposed To Work Under Win9x But Do
  17. Or else they put just "Windows" as the system requirements. *Slaps Head* *Facepalm* What windows? Windows 2.0? Windows 95? Windows 7. These morons don't get my money or time.
  18. Um, I usually read any text files called "readme.txt", which usually tell you the system requirements. Sometimes if you go up to the help menu, there's a sub-menu that details the system requiremts... obviously if the program is loaded, then you meed at least the minimum requirements. I go to OldApps.com and click on the "windows me" icon to find the last working version for windows me. -- I know, this doesn't help much. I don't know why you'd want to spend time with DLLs and dependencies. What good is some buggy program that doesn't work right? And that is one thing that irks me, authors who don't list the system requirements for their software. IF they're too lazy to bother with it, than so am I.
  19. I've purchased only one brand of thumb drives, TechUniverse. The 2Gb ones say on the back of the package that they're compatible with Windows ME. I've only seen these items being sold at Rite Aid. I bought another brand, which, when I bought it, I didn't realize it requires some password protection or activation. Needless to say it didn't work on Windows ME. Newfangled junk. I guess I'll just stock up on these Tech Universe ones. The 2gb ones work great. And there's another 4gb model they make that look's like a key for a key chain. It works as well, though the package doesn't say it.
  20. how big of a thumb drive can I pop into my windows ME computer? I have a bunch 2 gigs, plus a 4gig.... I notice the stores have ones that are like 8, 12, 16 or whatever. Would they work?
  21. Sorry I was rude to you Jody T.... I was in a real bad mood yesterday. You're points are correct. I shouldn't dismiss other folks legitimate grievances with Windows ME. Oh well... nothing I can do about that now. I feel lost on newer stuff. I used "some" version of Office at a printing shop while doing a resume... couldn't figure out what the hieroglyphics did. I thought Word 6 on Windows 3.1 was sufficient. Maybe I'm behind the times.
  22. Windows ME, and only Windows ME. Everything else sucks.
