'Food Fraud' a Growing Problem in Grocery Stores
ZortMcGort11 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
Another thing which is interesting if you research it, is that by the time the "Fresh" produce hits the store shelves, a lot of the vitamins have already dissipated. A lot of vitamin C is lost during the transport process and from sitting in the stores in the open air. Research has shown that canned and frozen vegetables are nearly as good... and depending on if certain things are out of season, canned might in fact be better. That being said, I just choose whatever tastes better and is more convenient. -
'Food Fraud' a Growing Problem in Grocery Stores
ZortMcGort11 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
Well, I know bananas get sprayed a lot, but with what, I dont' know. Whatever it is though, they still taste good. Must be the secret ingredient :-) -
Superman III was better than I thought it would be (having never seen it before). They never played this one on TV. Popular opinion is that it wasn't very good, but when was popular opinion worth listening to? Superman III was the least action oriented of the bunch, but the most interesting to watch from a character standpoint. It was like a less serious version of Superman 1, yet it still had good cinematography, music, and was funny. The second movie is a little dry, doesn't excite me as much as when I was ten years old and the fight scenes were the main draw. If you're feeling nostalgic there's also the lesser known Supergirl (1984) movie starring Helen Slater. Now, there was one awesome looking babe, especially as the brunette Linda Lee;-)

Typing from my Toshiba Tecra 720CDT laptop...
ZortMcGort11 replied to ppgrainbow's topic in Windows 9x/ME
(1) The world financial system collapses, huge companies go broke, PC sales crash, research and development is put on the back burner, food and shelter take precedence. Old computer parts are suddenly appreciated by the masses, after they realize they can still have fun and do practical things with old stuff. People can't afford the latest greatest doo hickies, so they get their hands on "junk" like old Pentium III and IV's, and lots of people stubbornly continue using XP, Vista, and Windows 7 for another 20 years. Windows 8 and 9 go over like lead baloons. The computer reaches a plateau while living standards fall in developed countries until they match, well, whomever is at the bottom. The 1% of rich people rule the world. The end. -
Win ME system file protection question
ZortMcGort11 replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for the further details. I definitely want System File Protection on. System Restore, on the other hand, I always disable since it uses up hard drive space... and I prefer to "restore" the computer via formatting anyway. -
Over hear near Seattle it's wet and damp as usual. Not much of a winter happening over here.

How are the permit and driver license tests?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Flasche's topic in General Discussion
Well, I'm 32 years old, and I can't remember what it was like taking my test (memory is foggy). I took the test one time and passed, and every time I have to get my liscense renewed, I have to go and wait in line for an hour just to take another mug shot. Pass it once, and your home free! Just remember to renew it before it expires. Make sure you're good at parallel parking, and listening to the instructor person, and drive slow while he/she is in the car. Don't go over the speed limit while taking the test. Don't run into any cones either :-) -

Win ME system file protection question
ZortMcGort11 replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
: - ) Thanks for clarifying, Dencorso. That's what I thought. Because I haven't seen any buttons that say "turn off system file protection" anywhere. Just making sure it wasn't included with the system restore. The amount of software I install on a daily basis, if it wasn't on, I think my computer wouldn't work as good as it does. -
How secure is your browser?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Flasche's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I occasionally use Opera 10.63 and FF 3.6.28 with Kernelex.... It looks like security wise, SeaMonkey 2.2.4 did the best. I'm guessing that's probably because it's the newer, whereas Opera 10, which is the oldest, got the weakest score of the three. I guess that figures :-) -

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
ZortMcGort11 replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I tried looking for version 3.0 on google but no luck... a pretty nice program actually... except one serious problem with version 2.6 is that it *must* be associated with zip files or else you continually get a pop-up window reminding you. So, had to delete.Further, the MonkeyZip program I posted above, well, after more extensive testing I realized it doesn't get along with zip files made using Info Zip's Wiz. Probably Wiz's fault, as that program tends to be pretty buggy itself. -
Win ME system file protection question

that's an interesting little program. I could just start uninstalling or adding stuff to my system and see what happens, kind of a trial and error method :-) -
How secure is your browser?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Flasche's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
(K-Meleon 1.5.4) - java disabled, javascript disabled, popup blocker turned on, image animation blocker turned on, remember passwords turned off, clear the cookies and history on every shutdown. I'd say it's a pretty secure browser. Never had any *noticeable* security problems. Then again, I don't put my credit card or social security numbers online using this computer. Overall score = 8. Minus two points for loss of functionality. Of course, my scoring is totally arbitrary. Who knows, my computer could be comprimised and I wouldn't even know it! However, I doubt it is infected because I have a total of 13 on-demand antivirus scanners/tools on this computer (or on hand). I'd say my paranoia is justified considering my computer's age. (SeaMonkey 1.1.19) - the exact same options are disabled here as in the above browser. Again, zero problems with security. SeaMonkey doesn't have the option to clear cookies on shutdown, so I use CCleaner to wipe out all cookies when I boot my computer. Score = 8. On another tangent... there is a criteria for determining your browser's uniqueness and how easy it would be for someone to track your digital footprint. Go here: https://panopticlick.eff.org/ I ran the test and here's my score: "Currently, we estimate that your browser has a fingerprint that conveys 19.88 bits of identifying information." -
Get my start button back in Opera 10.63?
ZortMcGort11 replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
thanks I'll try that out ;-) -
Is "system file protection" disabled when I turn off "system restore"? These are two different things, right? One is for proctecting and replacing critical system files in the background, and the other is for creating a backup restore point to roll back to. I always turn off system restore, just to save space and speed things ups, plus I'd rather format my hard drive anyway if something gets messed up. Does anyone know what PC Health and Statemgr.exe (or stmgr) processes are for? By disabling "system restore" I'm not also turning off system file protection am I? Thanks... hope somebody knows.

Good posts you found, Flasche. I agree with what that guy says about Windows ME being misunderstood..... in my experience, Windows ME has been much more stable than 98.

You and me, Flasche, we must be the only guys on the internet who use Windows ME ;-)

Have a Question About "The Perfect Crime"
ZortMcGort11 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
you'd probably have to ask the FBI or NSA, or the kind folks at McAfee, since I bet they're the ones who make those things to begin with... :-)
