Can be read like a crime mystery. If i ever get a NIc to work this way, i'll write a step-by-step instruction. Not yet, though, my Raid5 of 4 disks just lost 2 disks at once (36° C at the moment here), the last backup is 10 days old, and my WHS2011 says "i don't know anything about making backups... what? 10 days ago i did that? Can't even remember...". Not a good start for a day...

You are welcome. You slowly seem to get the hang of it, and your questions start to charter more territory - this is good. Just go on! Unfortunately, i know no reliable benchmark program running under w9x, and share your sentiment about CrystalDiskMark. Because of the rather low speed of ordinary IDE, or SATA-HDDs on these "pseudo"-IDE ports, i exclusively use SATA II SSDs. I had similar error messages as on your first screenshot (FIFO IDE) on my controller, and found a rather unpleasant way of removing it: I removed the SATA III SSD (a Vertex3 60GB), and connected a SATA II SSD (SuperTalent GX2, 128GB), and reset the controller (by removing the real-mode flag in the registry), and rebooted. Problem gone. It thus were the controllers on the SSD that forced the mobo-controller into real mode. The same problem may exist with hard disks. I don't know a good way for you to find out if that problem relates to you, but if you have i.e. older HDDs, it may be worth trying - though it may be cumbersome, as it may require moving the installation, or reinstalling. If i find time, I may try out, if it works in an PCI to PCIe-Adapter. After all is said and done, getting an NVidia card to run is just so much better, esp. if you have RLoews patch, so, don't bother about ATI-cards. I found neither official nor inofficial drivers, and what crap i found, didn't work. I abandoned the idea of using the SE. My trick (as i already said) is SATA II SSDs on port 5/6 (Legacy-IDE mode), or, if that doesn't work, the same SSDs on the add-in card with the VT6421A chipset. I don't know any benchmark results, but my machines are blazing fast with that solution, booting like *snap!*. (Expect the next RLoew advertisment for his SATA-patch to come up in this thread in 3-2-1- ... ... sorry, couldn't resist...) There is only so much you can do with NUSB, it is meant for storage, and for nothing else. If your USB-device is NOT storage, and does NOT have a distinct driver for w9x, i do not have any ready-made solution. Other members of the community reported these devices working, so you have to ask them.

Hi, fellows, i don't seem to find the threads where the use/installation of dos-LAN-drivers during installation, but, more importanly, AFTER installation of w98se is described in detail. Could anyone who successfully DID that, put a link to threads with some kind of HOWTO here, as well maybe notify the keeper of some stickyfied "important link" section? If there exists no such thing: It is sought after by ruthan and me. Any help would be appreciated.

This is now solved by using PCI-to-PCIe-adapters, with great success!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Story: I now own this AM4-board: http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X370 Killer SLI/ It has two SLI-enabled PCIe-slots for the dual-GPU-stunt (this is necessary, as it is too expensive to NOT Dual-Boot with W10 or Linux). It has PS/2-ports for mouse and keyboard, which, as RLoew will tell you as well, is very convenient. It has some PCIe-slots with good Placement. A lot of bells and whistles, but for the moment i ignore that... (RGB looks nice...) So, what i needed, were TWO PCI-slots, one for a PCI-SATA-controller with W98SE-support, and one for a card like the SB Audigy PCI. Works! I can boot any OS from that Controller (at least W10 and Ubuntu)! Then i bought another one, and put in the Soundblaster Audigy Player ("Gamer") PCI. Sound on W10 and Ubuntu! Works! The full-height Audigy Player sits in the machine in an elevated way (Fixation-Point 3 cm above the screw-hole, which is a lot), so i still have to think about some way to secure it. Dencorso hinted at a nice Adapter in the next post, which i bought immediately, but unfortunately, you need a reeeeeeally big Tower, to be able to use it... But the all-important audio-out sits still below the Fixation-Point. Hey, lucky! So, from now on, missing PCI-Slots for important add-in cards is not a (big) problem any more, as long as there are enough and well-positioned PCIe-1x-slots. (What does NOT work yet, is installing w98se on this AM4-board - i'm working on it - but that's another story... it does not look good at the moment... ) Cheers...

A good and cheap start is the GeForce 6600 AGP with 256 MB. But this one will get you started without a headache.

What problems do you have when using port 5 or 6 in ide-mode? The LAN 8111F is not supported by basic drivers. You may ask around here about how to use the DOS driver - i did never bother to do this, but others had success. I never heard of intel pci-e cards to work. You need the commercial NVIDIA-driver-fix (for memory as well as for interrupt problems) from RLoew to make that card work. I recommend you *start* with an old ATI x600 or x800, or perhaps ATI Radeon 9000 series, as those work without a problem on those boards. Then, later on, experiment with NVidia-cards. The USB-settings are delicate. You need this, as far as i know: "USB Configuration" Legacy USB Support [Auto] (<- this is the most important. You'll absolutely need NUSB (or perhaps an alternative from RLoew?) to get this to work!) Legacy USB3.0 Support [Enabled] (may not be usable, but it's not that important, it will not get in the way with w98se) EHCI Hand-off [Enabled] (you may try disabled, if you dual-boot, but that may, or may not work. start with enabled.) SB USB Configuration SB USB-Configurationoptions: OHCI HC (Bus 0 Dev 18 Fn 0) [Enabled] [Disabled] (<-- you may have to play with these, start with [disabled]) USB PORT 1 ~ 14 [Enabled] | [Disabled] (<-- disable only, if all else fails... You can start with using a PS2-mouse and keyboard, as this board allows that. Some USB-mice may work with an USB to PS2-adapter. That's why i recommend other PCIe LAN-cards (RTL8111C, RTL8111B, RTL8168B, RTL8111 and RTL8168 chipsets) and soundcards (i.e. soundblaster audigy 1/2 pci), or basically start with devices that have drivers for w98se AND w10, as such items usually a very cooperative, and have comparably new drivers of a good quality. Those AMD-boards are the only boards i have still active with w98se, but of those i have three working.

I have PCIe-cards with *native* drivers for Gigabit-LAN (at least two), and VGA (many, i.e. GeForce GTX 7900). Are you sure you really mean PCIe 1x?

There are attempts at 98SE running inside DOSBox with VooDoo drivers to have DX. I did not have the time to test this out yet (I will someday in the future), but even if it works, there will be issues, because VoDoo isn't exactly The Latest(tm) for W9x as well. Still, this DOSBox-thingie is the most promising project known to me. Going for a DX(9.0c)-enabled driver that hands through the API from a W9x-VM to a host is a non-trivial matter. Even for XP, which is understood much better by people like the guys from VMWare, this just barely works within VMWare workstation after years. The same with qemu on linux. R. Loew *might* be able to do this, but why should he (or just anyone) even bother? This is REALLY much work, and i don't think whoever did this would ever get enough money from it to justify this enormous amount of time. Again: We are speaking about years here. But in case: Just ask him...

I learned that the hard way last year, when it killed my C2Q system two times in a row, before i recognized the problem. Since then i disable the fast-boot right after installation. As the setting was reset by MS like so many other things after major updates, I check this after each (1607, 1704, etc.) as well. What i can't say is, why i did not have this problem on my AM3+ boards - i assume it has something to do with boot-order (on those systems, the Windows 10 partition is the boot-partition in BIOS, and I start XP and W98SE via BCD). But i'm not sure.

Do you have any machine on the same LAN to compare? Some Windows 10 machine, in example?

Gigabyte K8T800-8237? Funny, there are many places calling the MoBo like this... i second jaclaz finding, though, of course. Drivers for the MoBo for both XP and W98SE are provided by GigaByte themselves: http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-K8VT800-rev-2x#support-dl 6200: I'd still suggest using the older 77.72 driver for the card, as it is a bit more stable (no shutdown problems)... ...unless you use a widescreen-Monitor, whereas you should read about the unofficial driver provided on msfn.org (ask for it here, if need be).

Correct. Cool. I suspected something in that line, but didn't know that (it is not in the german wikipedia-text... btw.: The Biostar-board is limited to P4, so i wouldn't bother... The 4coredual SATA2 R2.0 is supported by the VIA Hyperion drivers, which includes sound, LAN, SATA, etc., that's why we have drivers. They weren't made specifically for that board.

On the 4coreDual-SATA2 R2.0, it's the (PT880 Pro/ VT8237S) chipset, which is about one revision later. No other board uses it, AFAIK, three boards use it, but never to the fullest. As far as i remember, it uses can use the same driver on W98SE for the SATAII controller as on the 775Dual-VSTA (both from 2003), that is, the latest VIA Hyperion, BUT (!): On my current installation, i disabled the SATA-ports for W98SE, as the way i use it, i have SSDs with XP and W10 on that ports, with NTFS (W98SE booting from IDE-SSDs on FAT32). It took me some time - and some unpleasant re-installation, as i fu**ed up - to have all 4 SSDs get a SSD-friendly alignment... Just for you... ...I just downloaded the drivers from asrock, had a look, and looking at the infs, they still seem to support W9x. I will try this out later this week, just to make sure. Yes, it would then be the only SATAII-driver for W98SE, but i suspect, the chipset is backward compatible. Maybe I'll try some benchmarking, to see if the driver/chipset really provides SATA2-speed, or if we are up to some fake-news... :-)
