If the OEM install is REAL - then it will not cause a problem. Do a bit of reading in other threads regarding what SP1 is messing up (leaked keys) and what will be OK LS

OEM installs will be fine - but as Sedative says, wait for official release. The SP1 is only going to check for the 2 or 3 volume keys that have been leaked - those will no longer work. OEM installs are not using those keys. LS_Dragons

I think I will install - but want to spend a bit more time looking it over (haven't worried too much about it because I have tended to DL all the updates when available). LS_Dragons

go to this site: http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp and look for the app called power toy. The documentation tells all about 'agents' and how to activate them for desktop or anywhere else. good luck and fun..... LS

Tend to agree with Piaqt -- certainly do not want all these similar apps clashing with each other trying to do the same thing. Also - I had good luck with zonealarm early on, but I read that it is gettting to be problems for many people. I personally have moved to a hardware firewall. You really have to look through the list and then the site they link to to find out if something is different than what you are already running. LS

Rick - can you access ANY files on the desktop system? You specifically say "wife's files on the desktop" Also - obviously you can see the desktop system in network places - so you have sharing set up .... do you have internet connection protection (built in firewall) running on the desktop system?

try uninstalling Math Addict - then appying the patches - then re-installing Math Addict. Let us know what happens.... LS

Regarding the new ad campaign - the 'real people who switched to Macs'. They have been running for a while now in the USA and I just have one question: Has anyone ever seen such a bunch of TOTAL LOSERS in their life? I mean these people are so worthless I cannot imagine taking their word for why I should switch to a MAc! LS

1600 x 1200 on a laptop? Jeeeeeeze how big is that thing - and how much does it weigh? I have a 4 LB. Compaq with native resolution on 1024x768. Couldn' imagine having somthing huge enough for 16x12 on my lap. hehehehehehe LS

you will need to download seperate SP1 for home and pro. You will be able to download in 2 ways - a small installer that will look at your system and only download the pieces you haven;t already installed in the way of Windows Updates. You will have to maintain your internet connection during the install as the pieces needed will be downloaded as needed. 2nd choice will be called an administrator download - and will download the 'whole thing'. This will be a bigger download - but will allow you to copy to a CD and reinstall should you have to go the Format and Reinstall path. Most of us on this board will choose the 2nd option I would bet:-) LS

Most OEM's utilize a BIOS checking in the install routine for the OS - if the BIOS says OEM NAME, then the OS will install without activation being required (this utilizes a set of files called SLP files). If the OEM OS is installed on a system without the correct text string in the BIOS - activation will be triggered. LS
