  1. Yo you guys -- Chronological age and technical age are 2 distinct things. A better poll question would be: How long have you been using personal computers? 1-3 years 4-7 years 8-15 years 15 or more LS_Dragons Oh - and I am about to hit 45 in Dec. and got my first PC in 1981 (an ATT PC clone) LS
  2. Only for playing TRICKS -- no treats here! LS
  3. I love the English -- especially the Judge telling the accused how lawyers can't aska 'proper question' LS
  4. definitely TRILLIAN. Extra bonus that it can 'see' MSN, AOL, Yahoo, IRC, etc etc etc. LS
  5. You might try something like this... I haven't tested it though (just making it up as I go from DOS cammand menory :-) Assume the directory you want to work in is ABCDEFG 1st - create a temp directory like this: md C:\ABCDEFG\temp 2nd - move the files you want to save to temp - say the are all .DOC files mov C:\ABCDEFG\*.DOC C:\ABCDEFG\temp 3rd - del all remaining files in original directory del C:\ABCDEFG\*.* 4th - move files back mov C:\ABCDEFG\temp\*.* c:\ABCDEFG 5th - delete the temp directory deltree C:\ABCDEFG\temp /Y so your full batch file would be: md C:\ABCDEFG\temp mov C:\ABCDEFG\*.DOC C:\ABCDEFG\temp del C:\ABCDEFG\*.* mov C:\ABCDEFG\temp\*.* c:\ABCDEFG deltree C:\ABCDEFG\temp /Y let me know how it turns out LS
  6. You can set IE to do this itself -- go into Internet Options - General Tab thenc lick on SETTINGS under Temp Int Files. There are boxes to check for delete every day, every exit etc. If you want to get EVERYTHING - you will need something like this: http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2002/2002-04-08.htm#2 it is called clean*.bat and can be modified to do allsorts of cool stuff. LS
  7. I have not heard about no future IE either - in fact just the opposite - that the next IE will be a significant part of longhorn -- could be that with longhorn IE no longer gets 'numbered' as it get even more tightly integrated into the OS itself. --- LS
  8. if your main goal is to copy DVD movies -- check the Documentation that came with your player -- it will tell you the media types that it will play. Mine (for example) will play CD-R but not CD-RW DVD-R DVD+R DVD-RW DVD+RW if you are making backups/data discs - then it doesn't really matter cause you will use the drie that made them to read them.... LS
  9. I have one question for Matt --- WHY? Why do you want an internet explorer that is optimized for displaying content you are not able to see if you are not a subscriber? If you have the latest IE - then you have the same browser that is in MSN 8. Sometimes I don't get the point of some of these questions.... LS
  10. Here is my updated ITEM.INI file: My Computer;generated do not edit; ;50;1 Microsoft Excel;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\excel.exe; ;0;55 Microsoft Word;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\winword.exe; ;0;72 Microsoft PowerPoint;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\powerpnt.exe; ;0;56 Microsoft Front Page;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\frontpg.exe; ;0;73 Microsoft Access;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\msaccess.exe; ;0;74 Mail;d:\program files\microsoft office\office10\outlook.exe; ;0;3 iExplorer;c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe; ;0;7 Trillian;d:\program files\trillian\trillian.exe; ;0;18 PowerArchiver;d:\program files\powerarchiver\powerarc.exe; ;0;42 MP3Player;d:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe; ;0;14 DVD Player;d:\program files\intervideo\windvd\windvd.exe; ;0;53 MOBYDOCK Control Panel;nothing to do; ;99;8 Clock;control.exe;timedate.cpl;10;59 susumu;c:\my documents; ;0;50 Recycle Bin;generated do not edit; ;55;46 The lines for POWERPOINT and FRONTPAGE were added by me. You have to make sureyou put them AFTER the MY COMPUTER entry and BEFORE the MOBY Dock COntrol Panel for some reason. Good Luck with it... LS
  11. So use this line as an example: Microsoft Excel;c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe; ;0;55 the last number (55) is the picture to use as listed in the imagelist.ini file the next to last (0) is described here: 50 - my computer 51 - my documents 0 - default 13 - Internet Explorer 99 - MOBYDOCK control panel (you should not remove it) 10 - Clock 55 - Trash So for my example - the 0 is just a default application type - Excel. good luck LS_Dragons
  12. You can have a Power Meter for your batteries - Go into CONTROL PANEL PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE OPTIONS POWER OPTIONS THEN UNDER THE ADVANCED TAB--> Check the 'show icon on Taskbar box As for shutting down - make sure your BIOS is set to turn off - and not to suspend, sleep, hibernate or whatever your manufacturer calls it. LS
  13. Yeah - I had a hard time deciphering the syntax needed to customize the mobydock - but finally got it. The last number for each line is the number of the PNG in the imagelist file. You can add a link to most things in the item file and then reference the image by number. I suggest cutting the number of images in the imagelist file as all are pre-loaded so consume resources. LS
  14. Drew - I had thought they were pretty costly also, but the prices have come down quite a bit. I got the Linksys model for under $50 - which I thought was worth it to keep from having to set up 2 monitors etc. LS
  15. Just finished setting up my new system - P4 2.4GHz - and decided not to retire my previous system yet. Too much 'stuff' on it I don't feel like transferring yet. So made a quick trip to Fry's and bought a Linksys 2 system KVM switch - lets me use 1 monitor, keyboard, and mouse for 2 systems. These tings are GREAT. Touch a button on the front and BANG! Using old system.... touch button again and BANG! using new system. Since everything is networked - may not retire old system at all. Highly recommended!!!! LS_Dragons
  16. All the more reason to be impressed with the lady's swimming ability - no wonder she wasn't out of breat - she was used to holding her breath back and forth across the canals LS
  17. So Lynch - did you figure out the dock? I just got around to adding some things to it. All the numbers and formats are explained in the readme file. Let me know if you don't have it and I will email to you. LS_Dragons
  18. based on info I have learned through work and also through reports in the press the key new stuff will be: - SQL Server based file system - all brand new - new OS API - which will enable the new graphical (3D) interface - enhanced support for rewritable drives (CD-RW, DVD-RW) - new version of IE - enhanced security (yeah right) LS_Dragons
  19. So the the insurance co. can replace both. LS_Dragons
  20. Most of us in USA have seen TV commercials featuring this site (it is an auto insurance commercia) - but our friends abroad probably have not. Check out the Virtual VOODOO site: Virtual Voodoo
  21. News tidbit from the Mike's List newsetter. I will just quote directly (this is pretty cool): A new anti-theft car security system from Italy calls your cell phone when your car is stolen, and tells you its location and speed, which it determines using onboard GPS. Push a few buttons on your phone, and the car's motor will shut down next time the car stops. Called i-mob, the system also lets you taunt and heckle car thieves from your cell phone through a loudspeaker in the car. i-mob will also call you if the car is hit or towed while parked, or if the car exceeds a speed limit you set (teenage drivers beware...). Prices start at around $1,000 and go up based on the options you choose. The system is sold in Europe, and will likely become available in the United States next year. i-Mob
  22. I like Lynch's style - I never stick with the same wallpaper or icons for more than about 2 weeks. I tend to stick with VS longer - but even those I rotate between about 5 that I really like. It is the icons that kill me - I haven't found an icon management app that I really like - so I end up doing it all by hand. LS
  23. Is this "teaming" the same as "bridging"??? What exactly is Bridging? Any experts with a simple description out there? LS
  24. Microsoft has communicated a service pack strategy of 1 every 12-15 months. With Longhorn due in 2005, I would expect 1 more Service Pack (2003) plus some sort of Second Edition of XP - probably 2004. LS
  25. Which version? Any service packs installed? More details please..... LS
