  1. According to sources, Ziff Davis (publisher of PC Magazine among others) is set to file for Chapter 11 protection: http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?na...article&sid=156 PC Mag used to be my bible -- now I really just glance over it. When I 1st got interested in puters -- I read every issue cover to cover. I would try all the basic programs they covered - re-write them to do things other ways etc. Be sad to see them completely gone. LS
  2. Check this story about an anti-gravity device. I could lose that 20 pounds easy with this thing! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2157975.stm LS_Dragons

  4. Well here is the cheat: You can configure Minesweeper to display either a white or black pixel on screen, depending on if the cursor is over a mine (black) or not (white) by following these steps: 1. Start Minesweeper. 2. Type xyzzy then press Shift+Enter. 3. Minimize all windows and begin play. The pixel in the top left-hand corner of the desktop will be black if the cursor is over a mine square or white if the cursor is over a safe square. This trick works on all versions of Minesweeper supplied with Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 3.1. LS_Dragons (from the Windows XP and 2000 Tips, Tricks,... newsletter)

  6. Why don't you just uninstall messenger - and use trillian? Here is how: "How can I remove Windows Messenger? Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7 Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger." 7. Vasilis - your post mentioned "outlook" not OE. Sorry. In OE, you might uncheck the box on the general tab of Tools - Options named: "Automatically log onto Windows Messenger" LS

  10. * REALNETWORKS TO INTRODUCE MEDIA SERVER CHALLENGER This afternoon, streaming media giant RealNetworks will announce a new version of its media server software, dubbed the Helix Universal Server, that's compatible with Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV) formats. But according to a report in "The Wall Street Journal," the server software will essentially duplicate the functionality of the Microsoft Windows Media Services (WMS) software that ships in current and future Windows Server products. And that, of course, might cause a bit of concern in Redmond. "A rational way for [Microsoft] to respond would be to say, 'This is great,'" said RealNetworks' CEO Rob Glaser. "That would be [the] Microsoft of the future." In developing the software, RealNetworks studied the ways WMS sends and receives data, then duplicated that functionality. Glaser says the company did this in a so-called "clean room," meaning that the RealNetworks engineers had no technical understanding of the system underlying the functionality that they were copying. Glaser, a former Microsoft executive, says that the software giant used a similar strategy to reverse-engineer technologies such as NetWare, PostScript, and JavaScript. RealNetworks, of course, makes the most popular streaming audio and video formats, and its expensive server software is required to deliver such content. Still unclear is what the company hopes to gain by releasing and charging for software that comes free with every copy of Windows Server. But Glaser says his company can deliver performance as much as four times faster than Microsoft's free server. Perhaps most intriguingly, the company will reportedly make the source code to Helix Universal Server available to partners and competitors, so that they can more easily build add-ons. RealNetworks will officially unveil Helix Universal Server during a press event this afternoon, the company says.
  11. Or... you can: 1. Start Outlook. 2. From the Tools menu, select Options. 3. Select the Other tab. 4. Clear the "Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook" check box in the Instant Messaging section, then click OK. 5. Close and restart Outlook for the change to take effect.
  12. Where exactly do you look to turn this setting off. Don't want to risk it. LS
  13. You might be able to create your own - but you would have to do your own 'hacks'. I have not come across many sites that document where all the bitmaps reside in 2K - but a bit of searching might uncover them. Check Virtual Plastic and some others out. LS
  14. Not so sure about that Drew... The heat is still generated, and has to go somewhere once the liquid takes it away from the source. It is a matter of how the heat leaves the laptop. Now, most fans direct the heat out of vents that tend to be on sides and bottom - or right onto your "lap". If the heat from the liquid is directed out of the case the same way, I am not sure you will notice much difference in the apparent temp. It will be quieter though.
  15. Yeah -- Poooooooooor Apple Lower hardware prices to try to keep their tiny market share, and try to make up the revenue with software pricing. Another item I didn't mention in the original post is that the next version of OS X -- OS 10.2 will cost $129 for EVERYONE - even current users of OS X. No upgrade pricing. LS
  16. Finally - the Mac addicts have a bit of news from Stevie that might p*** them off. Apple unveils new services - similar to the dot NET services - but the kicker - they will cost: "A bigger issue, however, is the new Apple .Mac (dot mac) services, a name that Jobs openly admitted is meant to sound like Microsoft .NET. .Mac replaces the old iTools set of services, with one crucial difference: iTools was free, but .Mac costs a whopping $100 per year. For this price, users get 15MB of email storage space, a Web-based home-page creator, 100MB of online storage space, access to backup and virus-protection software, and a special support area "for members only." When the company's new iCal calendaring software becomes available this fall, .Mac members will also get access to online calendar publishing and subscribing, which lets iCal users share their schedules with others."

  18. Well Jack: If you are stuck on SoCal - then stay away from LALA and see what is up down south. They don't call it San Degrade-o for nuthin. If you can live without a beach, but really like the old SOL -- check out Arizona or New Mexico. Not much hitek there except around Pheonix. I would suggest my hometown - Houston TX - for near a beach (although a fairly crappy one) and lots of sun etc and hitek -- but now that Compaq is HP and layoffs abound - it is a bit tight job-wise. If you can afford to move without a 'permanent' job - there are LOTS of hitek jobs for contractors (temporary employees) There used to be an outfit here called Computer Technology Search that did a pretty good job of finding contract positions......
