  1. Yep - rstryker - gotta agree with Zipp.... Yesterday - my daughter was that age. Today, she is a senior in high school and knows EVERYTHING (what woman doesn't?). Great thing about daughters though - they will always be your 'baby girl'....... LS_Dragon
  2. Here is my new one. Using the very cool 'unofficial' msfn wallpaper: Click for larger version
  3. Try this applet at Univ. of Colorado. Start with mouse on 'Earth' - hold the mouse button down and as you move away from earth release themouse button. A white 'satelite' will fly out. How many tries until you get a stable orbit? I got one into orbit on about 15th try - but it is a funky looking orbit. Still going though after 20 minutes. Pretty cool.... http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/apple...satellites.html LS_Dragons
  4. It should be in Z:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch where Z is your hard drive with XP on it and xxx could be ADMINISTRATOR, YOUR NAME, etc. There are several places to find it. LS
  5. If you make your own shortcut to SHOW DESKTOP in the admin folder as indicated in my post - you can then delete SHOW DESKTOP from the same folder in your user name - then it won't be in the QUICK LAUNCH bar. You can always copy it back later when you change styles. LS
  6. forgot one other thing -- why bother with an icon or the 'quick launch' at all. Just hold down the windows Logo key and press D. Bingo - all windows minimized and your desktop. You can tell I started with computers BW (Before Windows) cause I use tons of Keyboard Shortcuts. LS_Dragons
  7. Can't tell you exactly HOW to change the icon - but I can get you to a similar place. Create a new shortcut on the desktop: Right-click on a blank part of the Desktop Pick New | Shortcut In the top box of the Create Shortcut Wizard, click browse and find this file: "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop.scf" Then click Next - give it a name and click finish. Now right click your new icon, and select Properties then click on CHANGE ICON - select whatever icon you want etc etc etc. You can then drag that 'shortcut' down to the Quick Launch bar or whatever you want.... 8. I can probably help - but need more info. Were the computers in a network before? Are they all part of same workgroup? Did you set them to get their IP address automatically? From what I have read, if you already had a network - the MS wizard that comes with the software is kind of screwy. But if no previous network, then should be easy as ABC. LS_Dragons Hey Drewdatrip - I looked for your network question, but no find? have a link and I will take a look. LS
  9. Yeah Zipp - us 'old' guys can still keep up with technology though. I may have lost a step or 5 on the basketball court, but not at the keyboard LS_Dragons
  10. let me know if you need any maintenance manuals etc. I can get my hands on LOTS of old stuff - just need model # or serial number even better LS_Dragons
  11. Hey FthrJACK - Compaq doesn't build proprietary machines anymore (not for a couple of years now). That system in the pic is a "Deskpro 6000" - at least 4 years old & so is the picture - but I haven't changed near as much as the computers we deal with these days. The 'proprietary' systems from Compaq were mostly the consumer systems (Presario) not the business systems - and they are still giving a bad rap! LS PS - so why no pic of misskelli???? Scared?

  13. And this one is very similar: http://www.deviantart.com/view/743701 LS_Dragons
  14. First and most imprtant choice for me is size. You want to decide if you want a portable because you are going to be very mobile (carry it everywhere) or because you move around a bit - but then chuck it onto a desk and leave it there until you move to a new location in a few days/weeks. If it is primarily on a desk all day (hotel, dorm, etc) then you can go with a heavier system. Usually, the heavier (DT replacement) notebooks have more expandability, better graphics, bigger screens. They also tend to be less expensive, because the engineering / manufacturing costs are less. For me, I carry mine to every meeting (at work) and then home every night. Use my integrated 802.11b wireless to check mail, post to MSFN, etc while watching the tele and the thing sitting on my lap in the den. I chose a very light Compaq Evo N400c model: http://www.compaq.com/products/notebooks/n...-subfamily.html LS_Dragons
  15. BOOT.INI is not a terribly complex file -- here is the contents of mine. If you know what drives and folders are involved - you can re-build with any text editor and place in root of boot hard drive: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:\="Microsoft Windows" LS_Dragons
  16. I have about 450MB of icons, many sets including lots ported from Mac OS X. There are several programs that will 'manage' your icons, including replacing system, folder, and many application icons. Probably the most recommended is Microangelo: http://www.impactsoftware.com/products/products.htm LS_Dragons
  17. You just think you reached the eand of the internet. here is the REAL THING: www.teoti.com (TheEndOfTheInternet). Actually a pretty cool file/stuff download site. LS_Dragons
  18. The above is correct. The EN version of WindowsXP does not support what Microsoft calls 'double byte' languages. Some of the characters will be unviewable or unrecognizable - even with 'support' installed. LS_Dragons
  19. SWEET!
  20. Hey Lynch -- Tommy Burgers were THE BEST! Loved standing around in that dump eating the best chili-burger ever made. 10 paper towels at least - and still always some ended up on your shirt. LS_Dragons
  21. WENDY's - anytime over BK or MacD. However - I really miss IN & OUT BURGER from the years I spent in So-CAl. LS_Dragons
  22. Hey Teach - is it clockwise in the southern hemisphere? LS
  23. Misskelli: Are you tryinjg to do a full download and then install (network install) or the so-called 'express install'? Are you on dial up line or high speed connection? MS suggests the express install for slower connections - like dial up. What specific problems are you having? LS_Dragons
  24. Do we have Mods that speak/read all of the languages available? I can see it now - the foreign communites will get stocked with links to all the w*r*z and cr*cks etc. LS_Dragons
