Well... I'll bump this up since I think it's a great guide and should be easy to find. By the way... I just made an installer for PhotoshopCS using this method (after finding the 7zS.sfx from the extras package) and also by using the built in SFX method in WinRAR. For some reason, my WinRAR SFX came out at 160,357KB and the 7-zip SFX came out at 160,752KB (both set to Ultra Compression). Strange, no? It reminds me of a simple compression algorithm that we had to make for one of my computer science classes. My friend's "compression" algorithm would actually make the output files smaller if the originals were under 50bytes...

I'm just wondering about something so that I don't end up frying my new hardware... When a CPU dies, is it usually from overheating? or is it possible to fry the chip simply by running it to fast? So if I were to try setting the FSB to 166MHz, I'd need to set my multiplier to 10 to keep the same CPU speed, right? (just being paranoid/cautious here) One last thing (for this post at least) - does the FSB or the multiplier give more of a boost when talking about pure CPU benchmarks? For example, would I notice a difference on a pure CPU test with the default 12.5x133 settings versus 10x166?

@big poppa pump Thanks for the reply. I'm not really looking to overclock my CPU (although I'm guessing I could afford to). It's a Thoroughbred-A 2000+ currently running at 12.5x133MHz @ 1.58V (I don't know how much control of the voltage I have). At idle it sits at about 40-41C (with brand new AS5 - not worked in yet) and after 12hrs of Prime95 it got up to 46C (room temp is 21-22C). So I don't think cooling would be an issue if I push it a little bit. Like I said, I've got 2x256MB PC2700 and 1x512MB PC2700 (I thought it was 3200 - that must have gone into my ex's computer... ****), so I'm guessing that I've got some breathing room for frequencies in terms of my RAM (since it's running at 266MHz right now). The timings on the RAM right now are 2.5-2-2-6 and it's been stable running Prime95 since last night Just to help with more info about my rig so far, here is my heatsink. It's not the greatest, but it does the job better than the stock HS.

Just a note about overburning - you need to burn the disc in "Disc-at-once" mode instead of "Track-at-once". As for the CD-DVD Speed test - do you have a blank disc in the drive? You need a blank disc as a dummy disc (since it simulates burning) for the test. Do the test before you set your over burning settings in Nero. Otherwise there's a good chance you'll end up with a failed disc or a busted drive.

Any error messages? Or does it just close? Have you done the usual check for viruses/spyware? Use all the tools listed in the Malware section of the forums (as well as online scanners). Just a general note about posting, the more information you can give us, the easier it is for us to help.

Don't you get it? A trial version of software (there are plenty of examples out there - Even Adobe released a trial of PhotoshopCS2 (worth a pretty penny) a while back AFAIK) is just that - to get people to try the software for themselves. I never said that your software doesn't work, I'm just not going to believe that it does until I see it for myself on my computer (or at least one that is physically infront of me). The difference is that I can go to the local race track (or even downtown Vancouver) and see these cars for myself - in real life, and in person. Just to give you an example of how decieving computers can be, have a look at this picture. It looks surprisingly alike a real Audi S4, but it was computer generated. At first glance, it's hard to tell the difference. Same goes for any internet-based demonstration in my eyes. I think the reason why this thread has become so large is partially due to the fact that you arouse everyone's attention, and then let us know that it's unavailable to us - arousing everyone's attention again, but in a negative sense. Look at the number of threads from knowledgeable people here saying that what you're saying is a bit far fetched. For example, you seem to know about all these different "coding standards" but you're not the person responsible for using them... As for third party sources - they can be bought. Ever had a look at all the different AV "comparisons" and how most of them give a different result every time? It's because the company doing the comparison was bought out by the AV company who won. Plain and simple. If you want a true third party source, go to one of the industry leaders for security (you should know who they are if you're in the business) and then come back with their analysis. You'll probably get more (positive) attention that way.Long story short (and others have said the same thing) there are some holes in your explanations. -
Well... what have you tried to solve the problem? Have you tried flashing the lastest BIOS for the video card and your motherboard? Are there any options for the video mode in your BIOS during startup? Have you tried another monitor on the X700 card to see if the problem is with the card (since it seems like that's where your problem lies)?

I'd try cleaning it off as suggested. If the CPU doesn't work, go to PayPal or your CC company and get your money back. As big poppa pump said, soaking it in isopropyl alcohol will help soften up the compound before cleaning it.

I am having some really wierd CD/DVD problems

Is it a plain XP-SP2 disc? Have you tried integrating any drivers? Any extra apps in the disc as well? -

So why are you talking up this guy so much if we can't have a first-hand product to evaluate for ourselves? Couldn't this CP add a small timebomb into the program so that it only runs for 30 days? That way we could see for ourselves what this is all about. Shouldn't be too difficult for someone who apparently has integrated the program at a level that apparently no other program does. Did I ever say anything about evaluation copies? And startup-phases? No... I'm talking about here and now, and full legitimate copies that my friends have used. I can't even start to remember how many computers I've dealt with over the past year to help out my friends since I'm the local computer software "guru". That's the whole problem though - you are insulting our intelligence. You come here, telling us of this great product, and yet the only way for us to see it in action is through you and your computer. No matter what anyone says, a demonstration over the internet will never completely convince me. What was the point of coming here and telling us of this great product if it's not available? It makes absolutely no sense to me. It's like Microsoft starting to advertise about Windows Blackcomb and all the great new features it'll have - and then saying that we can't get it for another 7 years. -
Well... you can probably do the math yourself. 700MB/80min = 8.75MB/Min That means that if you set the overburn to 82Min, you'll get a CD with a maximum size of ~717MB. I'd still run the tests to see the limit of your drive. Every drive is unique in this department (even drives of the same model). Did you also look at the last little setting right below Overburning? That'll get you a little more space on the CD as well. Sorry, it's not the DriveSpeed tool, it's the CD-DVD Speed. Look under Extra->OverBurning Test. That will tell you how far you could push overburning, but I wouldn't use that number as the limit since you run the risk of damaging your drive. Hope this helps!

Yeah, Vancouver is really nice. Summer finally started last week if you know what I mean. Well... to let you know - I got the ABIT NF7-S motherboard on clearance. I looked at the board you linked to, but the 2 RAM slots and 2 PCI slots is kind of a bummer. The ABIT I have has 3 DDR 400 RAM slots and 5 PCI slots. Not only that, I managed to get my hands on a free Athlon XP 2000+ and another 512MB (2x256MB) of PC2700 RAM. Now... since I'm new to this whole "overclocking" shindig... the FSB on my motherboard is currently set to 133MHz (CPU runs at 12.5 x 133MHz). How would I go about making the RAM run at PC2700 speeds? My current RAM is rated at PC3200 (Kingston), so it wouldn't be the limiting factor. In my BIOS, I've got an option to manually set the FSB speed, but I'm not sure how that will affect the rest of the system. AFAIK, the AGP bus speed is independent (there's a separate setting for that).

Konfabulator - Make XP get Mac OSX (Tiger) feature
Zxian replied to prathapml's topic in Software Hangout
I will wholeheartedly admit that I hadn't read about that. Interesting... I still like AveDesk/SysStats a little more than Konfabulator. Having an app that uses 1.5MB of RAM vs ~20MB is more appealing for me. -
Anti-Virus to become obsolete.
Zxian replied to rhythmnsmoke's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Well... I'll pop my head in here again after having silently followed the thread for a while now. @jcarle - I agree with pretty much everything you said. @rythmnsmoke - I'd suggest you read up on someone's profile before questioning their background. Ever heard of JCarle's Utilities? A background check might help you save yourself from a bit of embarrasment. I think you're forgetting that a lot of people on these forums are in fact programmers and do know what the hell they're talking about. I'm probably like the majority of people here. Unless I can test it out for myself and mess around with it myself, I probably won't believe it. I know everything I do about the common AV and firewall programs because I've used all the ones I talk about. And as for the whole topic of "again and again"... how did this all start? Oh that's right... Something that looks terribly like spam, and something that is so off the market from what we all know already it's a bit hard to swallow. Everything that you've said since then is that it's the "prefect" security solution. Hell, you've made comments like "modern viruses don't know how to deal with ImmuneEngine". It's fine to try to tell us about something that's a better alternative, but what's the point if we can't use it for our own benefit? Tell us of this great product and then tell us that we can't buy it? Come on... that's just crap. Plain and simple. -
Konfabulator - Make XP get Mac OSX (Tiger) feature
Zxian replied to prathapml's topic in Software Hangout
Hehe... you just discovered this prathapml? If you like Konfabulator, you should also check out AveDesk/SysStats. The layout is generally the same, and it's free! Also, the memory usage with SysStats is much less than Konfab. AveDesk 1.3 is gonna have some really cool new features as well. For a small sneak peak at one of them, have a look at my latest screenshot. -
@matt5108 - I think that what you've heard about Firefox being fast comes from the fact that users need to tweak the settings. Now... think about the average Joe computer user, who is unaware of the severity of viruses and internet security in general. Is Joe going to know how to tweak his browser to make it go faster? Probably not. My parents barely understand the meaning of the word "tweak". Out of the box, Firefox isn't all that great until you start changing all the default settings. And just another point - for security, check out Secunia. They do security summaries for just about everything out there. You'll see that Opera 8.01 has zero unpatched vulnerabilities whereas Firefox and IE have several unpatched vulerabilities. I'm not going to press very hard here on this, but if you use IE, you are going to need tools like Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MSAS. I ran a scan a month ago for the first time since switching to Opera (about 6 months now - with Firefox as backup) and nothing came up in any of the three tools. Try running that long with IE and getting the same results. And the point that the tester makes about progressive rendering: is very true. Sometimes, when you're waiting for an image to load from a remote server, other browsers will not even show the page. Opera will show you what it's got so you can start reading right away.Just as a final note (just so I'm not being completely one-sided here) - I showed my parents Opera a while back (after I finished formatting their computer because of spyware/viruses...) and they didn't like it. I showed them a tweaked version of Firefox - they hated it. I showed them Maxthon (which is a bit better than IE) and they love it. For them, using Maxthon and all the anti-spyware tools is fine. It would make me puke, but they like it. So... to each their own.

The method you're describing is called OverBurning. It is possible in Nero (without any patches), but I wouldn't recommend pushing 760MB, as you may damage your drive. I think the DriveSpeed utility in Nero can tell you how far you can push your OverBurning limits. Run the tool and then set it to the next lowest minute (it'll give you a time index). See if you can 7-zip some of your installers. keyotime has made a great tutorial here that will not only make the installers silent (no need for switches in the batch file/RunOnceEx/whatever), but it will also help shrink some of the installers to a more useful size for your CD.

No way... that paperclip sold for $173 NZD... (~$143CAD). Now that is just plain crazy.

Dangit... why'd they take it down?

Well... I havent' posted here in a while. I figured I'd share with everyone again. Clean Dirty See if you can notice something non-standard about the "dirty" picture...B) Cheers!

Thanks for the input guys. @ssmokee - With no IDE drivers installed, the device manager said PIO mode for my 200GB drive, dispite being set to DMA if available. I am using an 80-wire IDE cable connecting all my devices. I had checked all of this before posting here. @jcarle - Yup... had gone through all that as well. Pretty standard troubleshooting procedure. Still no luck. And as for the audio, the upgrade wouldn't be in quality (I'd need a better sound card for that) - it would be more for the availability of 5.1 channel audio.
-
Well... it wouldn't technically be overclocking, but I (possibly) had a similar situation just last night. I bought an ABIT motherboard, and dropped in my Athlon 1.33GHz, but the default settings on the motherboard were 6x100MHz, giving me a CPU that was less than half the speed it was supposed to be. Long story short, check the BIOS of the motherboard and see if there's an option to set the CPU speed.

I actually don't mind it too much. Think about it from a consumer perspective. The word is uplifting and bright - a good marketing scheme there by Microsoft. And the problem with numbers/dates is that you know how old it is. Do you really think that people would still be buying XP today if it was called Windows 2001-SP2? Kinda makes you realize that it's 4 years old more than Windows XP does.
