Possible Speedup Installing XP by Expanding I386
Zxian replied to Araknis's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Thanks for the input nuhi! I was thinking along the same lines. Decompression almost always takes less time than compression, and with any computer that can handle XP, the decompression is faster than file transfer. -
Hmm... that's a good idea. I'll look into that. Thanks. Ahem... WS_FTP? Have you seen the $395 price tag? Also, since I'm sitting behind a router, I needed to forward ports for PASV operation. Filezilla was the only (freeware) server program I could find that would allow for checking the external IP of the network.

I'm sure that this has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer with a search. Does anyone know how to permanently remove the RECYCLER and System Volume Information folders from the root of a drive? I can get rid of them, but they always come back after a reboot. *grumble* I'm trying to host some files on the root of a partition I made, but Filezilla (the only FTP server I could get to work) doesn't have an option to not show hidden files/folders.

Lmao... I'd probably get that one if it were one of the possibilities. I got homer though... **** straight I know how to have a good time...

I'll double this... and bring the thread back up to the top. I'm looking forward to helping test out a new release as soon as you've got the time to finish it.

There's a sticky about the updates under the Unattended Windows Section Link It's got pretty much everything you'd want to know about the updates. Hope this helps!

Yup... I know the feeling. It happened just the other day...

Have you tried searching? The answer can be found very easily.

Well... first off you don't need a poll, and this should probably go under the hardware section of the forum. In terms of performance, you probably won't see much of a difference between SATA and PATA (which is the alternative) with today's hard drives. One of the advantages of SATA, however, is the fact that the cables are smaller and each drive is on its own channel. To explain that a bit, PATA drives (the old wide cables) could be piggy-backed, where you would have two drives connected to one channel on the motherboard. However, only one of the drives could be accessed at any one time. With SATA, each drive is always on its own channel, and therefore can always be accessed. As for the size - that all depends on you. How much space do you think you'll need? What kind of data are you going to be storing? Videos, music, pictures, or just documents? There's no point in buying a 300GB drive if you're just going to be storing text files.

Hey everyone, I've got a quick question regarding a new mobo for my computer. I've been having a problem with my Seagate hard drive that I got a while back. So... first off - my specs (they're not impressive by any means... ) Athlon T-bird 1333MHz (Socket A) Soyo K7ADA V1.0 motherboard 512MB PC3200 RAM (running at PC2100 because of system bus) 200GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 HD 40GB Seagate HD (ST340823) GeForce2 MX 200 Basically, whenever I transfer files (or have any decent amount of disk activity) on the new drive, the CPU usage skyrockets and the whole system becomes laggy as hell (Winamp stutters, mouse jumps, etc etc ). I've tried re-installing WindowsXP-SP2 and the evaluation of Server 2003-SP1 that I've got and the default drivers run the 200GB drive under PIO mode. When I install the motherboard drivers from Soyo, the IDE drives are listed as SCSI devices () and therefore I can't see what mode they're running under. I e-mailed Seagate tech support and they said that it was a common problem when the motherboard doesn't fully support the drive. I'm guessing that this might be the case, since in BIOS, my drive is listed as 137GB in size (when it's actually 186GB true size - the whole 48-bit LBA support thing). Anyways... those are the symptoms. I'm gonna double check that it's not my drive by putting it into another computer with a slightly newer motherboard (it's running an Athlon XP 1800+, dunno the exact mobo model off the top of my head) and seeing if the problem goes away. If it does I'm in the market for a new mobo that will fit my current CPU. And I found this in the clearance rack of NCIX... Would this board solve my problems? The USB2.0 and upgraded audio would be nice as well. Any input would be nice. I'm not looking for a complete upgrade, since this is basically my server box that mostly just sits there, plays music and movies, and downloads stuff. It's pretty much perfect as is, except for this annoying PIO mode problem. Thanks in advance.

Possible Speedup Installing XP by Expanding I386
Zxian replied to Araknis's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Well... specifically, a VMWare test with an ISO mounted as the CD-Drive would show an improvement since transfer speeds from hard drive to hard drive are typically faster than from an optical drive. That's the way I had my two installs setup that I descibed in my previous post. In the end, I'm not sure as to whether or not this particular part of setup would give you enough of a time bonus to justify the benefits. Another point is that not all computers have DVD drives, so if you're hoping to install other software, expanding the entire contents of the I386 folder doesn't leave you with much room to play with (even after nLite). -
Possible Speedup Installing XP by Expanding I386
Zxian replied to Araknis's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Ah... I see the dilemma. Well... my two VMWare installs are done now anyways... The ISO was on my hard drive, and as I expected, the uncompressed install was faster (~16mins) compared to the compressed install (~20mins) (1.4GHz P-M, 512MB allocated to VM, 5400RPM 8MB HD). I've got two computers at home that need some formatting done to them before September, so I'll be able to get a better idea of the advantages there. Althon XP 1800+ 512MB PC2700 RAM 40GB 5400RPM HD 48x CD-ROM Celeron 1.0GHz 128MB PC2100 RAM 20GB HD (don't know what speed off the top of my head). 48x CD-ROM Cheers! -
XP, RunOnceEx, I want to restart halfway through

XP, RunOnceEx, I want to restart halfway through
Zxian replied to jburbell's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Ah... I see your question regarding the order of RunOnceEx. To be honest, I'm not sure. Hopefully your test will answer that. As for the drivers, we're not gonna shoot you down here. I haven't done any of the hardcore integrating myself, but I know you can do it with nLite. Extract the driver packages (with WinRAR or the like) and then in nLite select the INF files that come in the driver executables. nLite should be able to integrate the drivers into the Windows driver base, so there's no need to install anything. What drivers are you talking about here? Are you also talking about camera drivers and the like? -
XP, RunOnceEx, I want to restart halfway through
Zxian replied to jburbell's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Is there any particular reason why you want to reinstall before installing the applications? Have you tried integrating the drivers into your CD? It's probably easier and cleaner than installing them afterwards. You could get away with it by having the drivers install under keys numbered 001-100 say, and then applications from 500-> to avoid any problems of overlapping. I'm not sure when the RunOnceEx list is cleared however (if it's right after the command is executed or after the entire list is completed). -
Lmao @ anti-virus ice cream maker... Put some of your homemade icecream in your computer and it'll definatley stop you from getting any viruses...
-
Wha...? Your saying you had an application that would make the install no longer work after the specified date? Why would you want to do this?

Possible Speedup Installing XP by Expanding I386
Zxian replied to Araknis's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I'm gonna test this out right now. I've made an nLited install with SP2 and hotfixes, and removed some stuff. Post nLite the (unexpanded) install size is 292MB. The expanded install size is 572.9MB. I'll let you all know how long it takes to do a clean install of each in VMWare. -
Even after uninstalling the mouse itself? The default (no driver) action is to switch to the next window? If so then your problem isn't with the Intellipoint drivers. And a mouse isn't just a mouse... my Logitech MX500 has a button on it that doesn't do anything unless Logitech drivers are installed. So no... the Microsoft and Logitech drivers are different and shouldn't be swapped. What drivers did you try btw? MouseWare or SetPoint? And I can also say that the last time I used the Intellipoint drivers (V5) the default middle click option was in fact autoscroll. And I've said it plenty of times before elsewhere on this forum... stop bashing Microsoft because you're having a problem with a setting. If you don't like it, stop using it. Try getting something like Intellipoint or SetPoint functionality in Linux...

Anytime. Glad to be of help.

@laura Thanks for the link, but I couldn't get FRAPS to capture video when I was sitting in Windows... which is where I want to caputre the video. It seems like it's only for games.
