The Application Layer Gateway (shows up as ALG.exe in task manager) is needed for the Windows Firewall to run. Plain and simple. No ALG.exe - no Windows Firewall. If you want to try some alternatives, have a look at the Sticky in the Software hangout section of the forums regarding firewalls. There are several freeware options available that all do a better job than the Windows Firewall.

@interminded - That's actually the first thing I would try doing (re copying NTLDR from floppy to C:\). @marthax - see if you can get your hands on a Win98 boot disk (you can find them all over the net). Copy the NTLDR file from a working Windows XP (or 2003) computer to the floppy. Use the copy command to copy the NTLDR file from the floppy to the system drive (probably C:\). EDIT - actually ignore this... it's a SATA drive, which means that it won't be visible from the Win98 disk... I think what intermided was talking about isn't the recovery console, but instead, doing a repair install (which I think might be a bit extreme at this point). I know that there are other methods of getting around this.

Are you using Azureus? I've had problems with that program since it "overworks" the network card, causing network disconnects. If you are using Azureus, try using another client, such as BitComet or Arctic Torrent and see if the problem persists.

You could try using Samurize or Coolmon. AveDesk with SysStats also allows for displaying of system information like that.

I like Freelancer, but I've never really got into playing it online. The online world is a bit unrealistic (you can get the Eagle in ~8 hours or so), and I actually don't mind the storyline of the single player missions. Welcome to MSFN!

d00d.... DOA in a movie... can you imagine the jiggling that would go on in that movie?!?!? The game is bad enough...

Hold on a sec... Is that the boot.ini from the directory C:\WINDOWS\pss? The real boot.ini that Windows uses to load is located in the system root (most likely C:). Open up C:\boot.ini and tell us what you have in there. (Use the code tags next time... makes it easier to read)

And to throw everyone off... I had this up even earlier! http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=50820 So if MartinL or xper put this on Frontpage... I got there first...

They're mainly bugfixes from various CD/DVD writers. Have a look at the changelogs (since they're incremental) for more info. Most program updates come in a larger version number increase. The last digits represent a small update of the program as a whole.

/me too... *drools*

Man... these guys just don't stop! http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php No changelog as of yet...

Do you have XP Pro? If you do, check under the Group Policy editor User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar Set the value for Hide the notification area to disabled. Hope this helps.

Well... if you had read the rules of the forum you'd find out that we don't help people with cracks and such. Why do you not want Microsoft (please don't use M$) to know that you exist? The activation is there so that they know you're using a valid copy. Just get over your fear of activation and send in your info (which is essentially just your CD-key and a hardware ID). That way, Microsoft won't bother you anymore. Although, if you've already cracked your system, you probably won't be able to un-crack it (since no-one would use that kind of tool), so you might have to do a repair install of Windows.

ripken204 said that he had tried reinstalling it (which I'm assuming meant uninstall-reinstall since he's no id***...)

I know TweakUI has the ability to hide certain drive letters from showing up in My Computer (I'm not too sure about elsewhere). If it hides all references to the partition, you could use regshot and find what changes it makes and then apply those in your batch file.

No worries... Yeah... we'll have to see where our top line ends up next year. Naslund may be leaving *sniff*, as well as a lot of other big hitters.

I think you might find some good info here. Sorry to any mods if I'm breaking a rule by posting this link

I'm going to call upon your knowledge of the subject here, since all I've heard are shady explanations of this so far. Wouldn't it be better to "pre-allocate" the pagefile to the maximum size you'd need it at? That way it's there if the system needs it, and it just writes the memory to disk. If you set it to system managed and your system needs more pagefile, doesn't that mean that it will take time for the system to allocate hard drive space for it? Not to mention the problem of pagefile fragmentation - I'm not sure if it plays as big of a role as some people make it out to be, but it's another question mark for me. I think you meant to say that the swap/pagefile should be put on a separate hard drive, not partition. If you put it on a separate partition, chances are the hard drive read/write head will have to move back and forth between system files on your system drive, and the other partition where the pagefile lies. So it's either on system drive or other hard drive... or ideally, both (if they're on separate IDE channels).

Ah... it would have helped if you explained that in your first post. Remember, the more information you give us, the more we can help you.

Ok.. quick question... does this increase the idle RAM usage of the computer? And, would running the program and unchecking all the boxes return the system to exactly how it was? I'd rather not apply a set of tweaks if I can't easily undo them.

Or... you can use Windows' built in settings. Right-click My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Settings (under Performance)->Checkmark beside Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop That should do the trick. If it's already checked, uncheck it, click OK to get out of the menus, and then re-check it. Sometimes Windows needs a good kick in the pants.

Nah... I just upload them to my webspace through my university (it's free!). I haven't got any complaints about bandwidth yet, so I'm in the clear!

That sounds like a pretty good setup for a 40gigger. You shouldn't have too many problems with that.

I'm constantly multitasking (VMWare, Outlook, Opera, etc etc etc). I've got 1GB of RAM and with no pagefile, Windows complains (it's the VMWare...). Dirtwarrior - you must not be running any sort of virtual machine... So I've got 1024MB min/max pagefile, and I haven't run into any problems yet. Unless you're strapped for hard drive space, I'd set it to about 1 GB. If you're going to be doing any sort of gaming you must have a pagefile. Some modern games (and even older ones) will complain at you if you don't, even if you've got 2GB of RAM
