Sure Mac OS just works... for their hardware. Have you ever considered the vast differences in hardware that Windows supports that OSX just wouldn't work on? Remember, Apple is a hardware company first, software company second, and the software that they write only has to work for their hardware. As for Linux and BeOS - I'm sorry to say (and anyone who thinks otherwise can say so) that it is more difficult for someone who isn't familiar with computers to setup a *nix system from scratch (i.e. install OS, drivers, apps, etc). Sure, once you get it working, it's great, but getting it there can be a pain in the a** for most people (remember - not everyone is as computer savvy as you might be). I think it's been said elsewhere regarding the registry - it's not Microsoft's fault that other software companies misuse the registry. There's a lot of talk about moving program settings to XML files and leaving the registry (or whatever it turns into) for the OS (which I think would be a much better method). And stop it already with the whole "because they own the market" crap... Many of the top execs in Microsoft realize that people are becoming more aware of the alternatives to Windows, and they want to make sure that they keep their products up to par to keep their share of the market. If you were to run a company, would you sit back and relax once you've got the majority of the market? Of course not - you'd try to keep it that way. I've just seen too many of those kinds of comments, and it's usually from people who haven't done their reading on the subject.

If you want a good example of one way to make an installer, have a look at vcBlackBox's work on the NCAB project. It's got the basics of greating an SFX installer that extracts itself and installs the program. Hope that helps!

Haha... everyone (except dman) has said that they want a laptop... I've got both and I've gotta say that I use my desktop mostly just for downloading and running my FTP server. For general purposes, I much prefer my laptop - the feel of the keyboard takes some getting used to, but once you do, it's much nicer. Not to mention that my laptop is much more powerful than my desktop...

QuickBatchFileCompiler can create silent exes that are essentially the contents of batch files. There's an option with the program to make the program silent. The only downside - it's not free.

I'm not all too sure. It was the stick of RAM that came from my Dell system (I know I know.. Dell... *shudders*). It's a Samsung chip, and for some reason, it won't work with other chips in a system other than the Dell. I've mixed and matched other chips without any problems in my current desktop - it's just that one Samsung stick that doesn't work. On it's own however, it's fine. I've beat the thing as hard as I could with Memtest and it's perfectly fine - it just doesn't like company. But to aleviate your concerns, I've run a stick of 512MB PC2700 and a stick of 512MB PC3200 in my desktop without any problems. They both just default to the PC2700 speeds (333MHz).

Can you plug in both PC133 or PC2100 RAM? The two are not mixable. If you've got a stick of PC2700, then you should be able to add a stick of PC3200 without any problems. You cannot, however, add a stick of PC100/PC133 RAM.

Ok... I'm starting to have some troubles with this... I've downloaded the latest releases (Nero 6.6.015a and NCAB 2.05) and followed the usual procedure (compatibility mode - revert command line to defaults), but this time, I get a really small file that generates an error on exectution. It seems like NCAB doesn't actually extract the files from the Nero 6.6.0.15a.exe package (that part goes by really quick on my computer). Any ideas? EDIT - Just tried NCAB 2.05 with Nero 6.6.0.15 and all went well. I'm gonna see if it was just a bad download of 6.6.0.15a... EDIT2 - Ok... crisis averted... For some reason the original download of Nero that I had was 35MB... so NCAB wasn't extracting the files. Great work!

I've had this situation with one particular stick of RAM. It works fine on its own, but mix it with any other RAM and the system won't boot. No big deal... just chuck it out (it's 256MB PC2100 184-pin). Laptops don't behave any differently than desktops when it comes to RAM in terms of sizes and such. Laptop RAM is typically known as SODIMM RAM (that's the chipset of the sticks). I think the price you see is mostly due to the name that comes with it.I've got a 1GB PC2700 chip in my Compaq laptop to replace 2x256 PC2100 that came with it, and I've had no problems whatsoever (the stick cost $170 USD). But in your case, I'd check the RAM chips that you get in the first place - if they're PC3200 (400MHz), then you'd want to buy RAM to match that.

You shouldn't need StyleXP. The reason why that boot.ini is showing up is because you probably haven't selected to search for hidden and system files. Try checking that under "More Options". To open up the real boot.ini go to Start->Run and type in C:\boot.ini. This will bring up the file that actually matters during startup. The other one is just a copy.

k... wtf... I just quoted BombaTwist from the hardware section here... Anyways... if you want to be sure about your firewall, you can check out Shields Up! Google it for the address (I'd give you the wrong one since I'm proxied here at work). AFAIK, the Windows Firewall actually runs from the ALG, but the settings are managed through the Windows Firewall service.

I think the ultra low voltage processors are more meant for longer battery life as opposed to high power. If you want something with more power, I'd look into getting a laptop with the Sonoma core processor. They're good on battery life and still give you ample power.

I'm asking on behalf of a friend who just bought a new laptop that came with 256MB PC2700 DDR-RAM. I've got the 256MB PC2100 chip that came with my laptop sitting at home not doing anything useful, and I was thinking that I might be able to sell it to her if the performance would increase. Since my chip is PC2100, the whole memory bus would run at that speed (right?). So I'm basically asking what would be better for the system... you can find the link for the specs here.
