  1. Yeppers, I used the MSE x64 build for Vista/7 and that worked with Windows XP x64 Edition. Don't forget to visit 5eraph's updates site for a cohesive method of downloading updates after April 2014 up to July 2015. I think he has it integrated into one pack, but failing that, you can use these updates: http://wp.xin.at/xp-x64-post-mortem-updates
  2. So if I have this right Jaclaz, if I'm not on a Windows NT domain, I would be completely unaffected, is that right (or am I misreading it).
  3. OK first off I probably pulled a stupid. I have the Windows Mail client from Vista running on Windows 8. One thing I really noticed is how fast the send/receive dialog flipped by when I engaged it. Recently though, there was an authentication issue on Zoho's end (Zoho is my mail provider). Thinking it was something on my end, I attempted recreating the accounts, compacting the database, and even running CCleaner. Now the Zoho issue is resolved but I notice that the send/receive process is noticeably slower. It appears that messages are about to come down, even when there are none. The progress bar goes across regardless, whereas before, it was lightning fast, even when messages were downloaded. I have deleted the WinMail program folder, reinstated it, reregistered the app to work with Windows 8 mail defaults, and recreated my accounts, but it's still a tad slower (not obtrusively but enough to know it's not like before) Any takers? One thing I can think of having done that may have added to the situation was be removing Internet Explorer 10. I not only disabled it from Add/Remove Features, but I also removed the payload on disk with the DISM command. So the IE program folders have some of the rendering stuff still installed, but the browser itself is gone. (I have since attempted reinstalling Internet Explorer 10 with the updates, but no improvement there.)
  4. OK. It was to be more or less plagurized from the Windows 8 Forum that Brink runs, but I'll look and see if there's something duplicated first. Thanks Noel.
  5. Just an update if anyone had a similar issue. I'm pretty sure I experienced those symptoms because my VS was built while I was running it on Windows 8.1 in a VM. And now I'm using it in Windows 8. It works with Taskbar Tweaker though in every other respect.
  6. So why would you want to disable SFC and Windows Resource Protection? I understand if you want to preplace a protected file, but on an ongoing basis?
  7. Isn't that basically what ReactOS is Vinifera?
  8. In removing the Apps and AppStore, do you have a tutorial on how you did that? I removed the WindowsApps directory, and concealed most elements with Classic Shell and defeating UAC. Does that do it all?
  9. I used DOSBox, and I had to set the frameskip higher to stop the jittery sound and video on games like DukeNukem3D (I like the oldies). Are you saying that this works for sure to remedy that issue? I set my output renderer to "surface" I think.
  10. Thanks for all of your help on this. And now with Windows 8 being EOL, I've completely turned off and disabled the Windows Update Service, cleared out the Software Distribution folder, and Windows Defender still updates on schedule.
  11. Not to derail the thread (but at least it has to do with Windows 8 on a tablet), does the tablet just assign some of it's RAM as drive storage, or is there just a small SSD inside? I'm thinking as in the Asus tablets.
  12. Would this be the spot to post registry tweaks for getting Windows Mail (from Vista) to be FULLY integrated/associated with Windows 8?
  13. That's what I'd like to know. Dibya seems to be aiming for the same thing with Windows XP.
  14. Which means once updates are finished installing there'd be no slow downs. I really like Vista (but I liked XP x64 Edition better). I'm REALLY enjoying Windows 8 x64 though
  15. No worries. I found a solution: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/346835-cant-modify-registry-key-even-after-changing-permissions.html
  16. I have posted this question on the Windows 8 Forums as well. So a bit of an involved situation here: First off I wanted to add a registry key to make Windows Defender scan for incoming files only. I was going to add this DWORD value to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Real-Time Protection: RealTimeScanDirection = 1 However I couldn't because the permissions likely didn't allow for it. So I changed the owner of the "Real-Time Protection" key from SYSTEM to Administrators (I even tried for my user account which is just the renamed Administrator account). I assigned full control rights to Administrators and "Me". However I still cannot add the DWORD value. Now I made myself owner of the entire Windows Defender key thread, and I can change values of other keys. But I can't add or change anything in the Real-Time Protection key. I'm perplexed. After that, I want to see if there's a way to reset the permissions on the Windows Defender keys (the entire tree).. Any takers?
  17. I'll be delighted if that, too, turns out to be the case -- one look over to the left, below my MSFN join date, will confirm it! --JorgeA Ah I see! Cool!
  18. Now there is no malware on that DeviantArt link, is there?
  19. Yeppers, I am quite aware of all of that. But thank you. I just didn't want you to think that was lost on me, especially since I had already considered a similar situation with Server 2008 "classic" and Vista, and also with Server 2003 and XP x64. In the latter case, many updates were able to be used directly.
  20. I think what'll do is try this after creating a restore point. I can always undo it after that. Additionally, I will boot up into a Linux live CD and create a backup of Windows system folders (while they're not in a locked or in use state, and that way I can just move it back if I need to.) I'll keep you posted with what I find out. I was hoping that a similar development arises for Vista after April 2017, using Server 2008 updates. Again, we'll see.
  21. I'd like to try Windows XP with the inexperience pack that allows a complete Windows 2000 appearance (right down to the actual icons)
  22. Gotcha. ComputerNerd; feel free to chime in. But thank you JorgeA.
  23. I don't know if it's been all that much of a risk to run for the last six months. I'm at work right now on Firefox v43 running on Windows XP SP3 (nowhere near as stable and secure as Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP x64 Edition.) We've had NO PROBLEMS with this machine in the last couple of years, and keep in mind I was one of those who was VERY concerned about security post-extended support.
  24. Yes it was a GX110.
