Hello again, my dear beta testers! My starter program is now of version 3.2.0.0 and should even run with install paths containing spaces. I am very excited if it now works for you all. Cheers, AstroSkipper- 922 replies

ProxHTTPSProxy and HTTPSProxy in Windows XP for future use
AstroSkipper replied to AstroSkipper's topic in Windows XP
Just to clarify it! The program which has to be started automatically at Windows startup, is my starter program StartProxy.exe, and not ProxHTTPSProxy.exe. There is no problem with ProxHTTPSProxy.exe, but there was one with StartProxy.exe. The new version 3.2.0.0 of my starter program should run with install paths containing spaces, too.- 922 replies

Any spaces in your path? I do think so. The program folder "Program Files" in English versions of Windows XP contains a space. A fixed version is on the way!- 922 replies

Maybe, if the path of your installation contains spaces, the new starter program might not work. Just to be on the safe side, I'll send you a new version which also works with spaces. I didn't see that because in the path of my installation, there are none.- 922 replies

AstroSkipper replied to AstroSkipper's topic in Windows XP
Hello, my dear beta testers! Yesterday, I went to bed very early due to some hurts. In the night at 02:00 am (Germam time), I got up, switched on the thinking area of my brain and started my desktop computer. I tried to solve the minor start problem of ProxHTTPSProxy at Windows startup. I checked the code of my starter program StartProxy.exe and modified it. And, what should I say? After some tests of new code variations, I could indeed solve the problem. From now on, a delayed start of StartProxy.exe at Windows startup is no longer necessary. I'll upload an archive containing the new version of StartProxy.exe and the reviewed documentation, credits to @Dave-H mainly, as soon as possible. You'll get the link via PM as usual. Please, replace the files and try to run the new version of StartProxy.exe automatically at Windows startup! After checking if it works, I need your detailed feedback. Please, provide detailed information about your systray icons in regards to ProxHTTPSProxy and Min2Tray, either via a description in words or a screenshot of your systray! And report what happens at Windows startup! I definitely need confirmations of you all! Thanks in advance! Cheers, AstroSkipper- 922 replies

Ok. Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable was installed in your system. Very good! Without it, you also couldn't have tested my program package, though. And, unfortunately, you are not up to date. As @mina7601 already posted, the latest version is 14.28.29213. Your version is 14.0.24215. Have a look at my screenshot! Cheers, AstroSkipper- 922 replies

Thanks @mina7601 for your addition! I just wrote Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable because that was the information I got from @cmalex. In my system, I already installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable, therefore I did not need to install a further version of Microsoft Visual C++. But the more recent the more better, at least for essential system files.- 922 replies

If your hard drive is defective or has bad sectors, you should back it up completely and then test it for errors using the manufacturer's checking or formatting software. Sometimes, there are just pending sectors and can be fixed by hard drive electronics, triggered by executing the manufacturer's checking or formatting software. I did that successfully several times in the past. Check your hard drive first by using Hard Disk Sentinel or CrystalDiskInfo to know exactly what's wrong with your hard drive! Both programs are available as portables, too. Cheers, AstroSkipper

ProxHTTPSProxy and HTTPSProxy in Windows XP for future use
AstroSkipper replied to AstroSkipper's topic in Windows XP
So, I'll draw a short interim conclusion. As far as I can see, my program package works exactly as described in the documentation. It runs under Windows XP 32 Bit as well as 64 Bit. This was confirmed by @Dave-H, @mina7601, and @NotHereToPlayGames. All further considerations refer to future features. Very good! Then we've already done quite a bit. Let's see what else @George King has to report! And, of course, you can keep testing until the box smokes!- 922 replies

As a creator of such a program package, you have to think of all users. Clicking to start the proxy has to activate its settings automatically, and closing it, has to deactivate and to clean up its settings automatically, too. Maybe, the user uses other proxies, too. PS: But I thought of you, too. I knew from the previous beta test that you need to run the proxy at Windows startup. That was the reason I wrote in the documentation about the autostart of ProxHTTPSProxy and its delay! Frankly, I do not use or need this feature, but on the other hand, a working and meaningful feature is worth to implement. I will do that in the next release.- 922 replies

No, only advantages! When you execute my starter program StartProxy.exe, it doesn't matter whether manually or via autostart, the proxy will be activated automatically in the LAN settings of IE, and after closing, deactivated automatically, too. In the case, you would start the proxy by executing ProxHTTPSProxy.exe, no automatic activation or deactivation will be done, unfortunately. Once again, that's the reason I created my own starter program StartProxy.exe.- 922 replies

@Dave-H And, there is no way to shorten this process tree. @cmalex tried to program the feature of automatic activation and deactivation in Python, but the file was about 18 MB, and he did not like that. My file, on the other hand, is very small.- 922 replies

Correct! My starter program StartProxy.exe calls the file ProxHTTPSProxy.exe in the main folder, which then calls ProxHTTPSProxy.bat, which in turn calls python37.exe. No mystery! You can see the process tree in your task manager.- 922 replies

Unfortunately, that's no solution! The starter program ProxHTTPSProxy.bat was created by @cmalex and does not have the feature of ProxHTTPSProxy's automatic activation and deactivation in IE's proxy settings. Check the LAN settings, and you will see! I already tried it and modified it without any success, so far. That's the reason I created my own starter program. @Dave-H All @cmalex's original files for starting the proxy don't provide any automatic proxy settings. In these cases, you have to set up the proxy manually. You see it's a bit more complicated as it seems. Anyway, my starter program StartProxy.exe is working, and therefore it's not buggy. But, as already mentioned, I'll try some new code when time is available. Actually, the start delay does make sense, though. In your case, you also have to delay the autotart of your email program Eudora to avoid problems.- 922 replies

AFAIK, such POSReady updates don't exist for Windows XP x64. They are not required to run ProxHTTPSProxy. But I think you probably can't access MU website, though, to search for updates by using this proxy.- 922 replies

I observed the same behaviour. If it is loaded too early, it can't find its working directory. Maybe, I can fix that but presumably, not before the next release. I have to find the cause. But there are other programs in Windows which behave in a similar way. They need some modules or environment conditions not existing in a early phase of Windows startup. @Dave-H When I created the starter program StartProxy.exe, I tried many code variations to get it working, especially due to Microsoft's buggy START command. @cmalex already knew that and gave me an important tip referring to its syntax. Thanks for that once again, @cmalex! In the early phase of Windows startup my starter program can't find the executables in its own directory. With a delay of 10 seconds for example, it has no problems to find them, though. On the other hand a delay is necessary to let Min2Tray start first. The program PopMenu has no influence on my startup program because StartProxy.exe is started separately. I'll investigate this more deeply in the next days. I already have some further ideas, just need only time to test it. Creating such a program package is not as easy as it seems. And you have to spend a lot of time to make it work as it should.- 922 replies
