Very funny. And you know that people have done it, otherwise, we wouldn't have a Darwin's List. DL
  2. Well I tried searching through the forums again for what was similar to what you ask but couldn't find it. The program I remember someone setting up checked for newer versions of programs and would download them but that is a bit different than what you are talking about. My guess is that there would be some interest in a program and repository such as what you have described. Press a button and the program checks for updates on server, tick desired boxes on list, hit enter and they are installed. The main concern I can see is if someone manages to grab a hacked version of such a program. DL
  3. Found this. Looks interesting. Linux distribution. Edit: Link: dyne:bolic I'm an id***. Thanks nitro. DL
  4. Well, I've Googled through the forums and I can't find it but there is something similar that someone has already produced within the past year. I'll look again and if I find it, I'll post. DL
  5. Welcome to MSFN Buttercup. To answere your question, there are 'Gals' here. But this is not a 'guy thing'. Masculine and feminine surface occasionally but for the most part, that stuff stays low on the profile. I think that when the term guys is used, it is almost always gender neutral. DL
  6. Congratulations guys. Nice recognition. Cover page too. DL
  7. I'm a square, so I would vote neither. I couldn't vote on a definition for either because I can see a nerd as someone who would wear a pocket protector but wouldn't neccessarily be good at anything. A geek has always had the connotations of a carny freak who bites the heads of chickens. You can be a chicken decapitator if you want. I won't stop you. Computer geek and computer nerd have a different meaning to me than they have without the adjective. Both would be more in line with the definitions you guys have given. Mind you, I tend to think of the computer geek being slightly bug eyed and would tend to crane is neck more. DL

@debby-Grats on getting a good disk done and since you don't appear to have introduced yourself in the "Introduce Yourself" forum: Welcome to MSFN! @bledd- good job. I appreciate debby's effort here from the human point of view. DL

Ah, nothing special. It's just like all the others. You know, bake some cookies and then bake some more. Occasionally they would bake some oatmeal cookies for variety. It was a fair hit in it's day. Any greater description and I would get banned. Your view count is getting pretty good on this thread. You in advertising? lol Oh, I hope your next attempt to burn a successful disk is good. We are all waiting. Don't forget to be informative on what you have done to be successful(like you need to be told). DL

Good one debby. But my guess is that 99% of the guys here don't know Dallas. DL
  11. Not really. Just a note that says "kick me" which stays there until the person figures out that it's there. They usually figure it out after their tush gets really sore. DL
  12. @computerman- It doesn't suck. But it is spooky. To me, it is one of those landscapes that is extremely lonely in a surreal way. Rod Serling would be proud of you. DL
  13. @alittlecrazy Very nice desktop. I must admit a preference for natural over created artwork. The style and color you used is a very nice blend even though the olive color normally makes me cringe. The muted icons are a good selection also. Overall, a good composition. DL
  14. Well, I don't know if you guys are like me but as with television, I have learned to tune out advertising. I have a longstanding distrust of advertising If it's on television, I change channels, go get a sandwich or go outside to smoke but the commercials don't get watched by me. Well, except the Geico commercials and I don't use that insurance anyway. So no gain for them with me. On webpages, it doesn't take long to mentally filter out the junk and find what I am looking for. So, again, no gain for them with me. If there is something I want, I Google it or go to specific sites to acquire it. With the file sharing sites, I can see how it is frustrating to you and I can get frustrated the same way. Quite often, I see someone listing multiple large files for download and people wanting to download them all. Click, click, click. GBs of bandwidth used and from little to zero attention paid to the advertising. As to people in regions where there is blockage or restriction on downloading or access, I have run into the same thing with a few sites that are overseas to me. I'm guessing it is worse for you. My sympathies. This is true, but I would think there would be people who would do it for a break even proposition but I don't think that is a reality. How many times have you seen a site shut down or a program stop getting support? Some only want a pat on the back and some only want a little of the financial burden spread around but neither happens. The cheesy tactics used by some of the sites you list is immoral to say the least. The question is, what is an easy solution? I say easy because if I were to do it, it would have to be easy. DL
  15. No worries. I've known people who have gotten decent scores and gone back and taken the SATs again just to up their scores. Like you have pointed out, it isn't an one shot deal. Do well. DL
  16. Thought this might be useful to some. From their wiki: Home page. DL
  17. @Ludwig- DGigrinder? @christopher- Google the names that Ludwig stated: (1) Nandub (2) Virtual Dub Then experiment. (and remember to use copies of your VOB files or whatever you are experimenting on!) DL
  18. Yeah, all kids study that stuff in 4th and 5th grade and make 800s. Me included. DL
  19. OT: So not to confuse those who wouldn't know any better. The correct expressions are- Thick as thieves. Useless as t1ts on a boar. DL
  20. Maybe these pics can tell you a little about Dup Detector. DL
  21. I haven't tried any others but I like it since it is free. I remember that I would just compare smaller folders due to the speed issue you are talking about. I'm not positive but I do recall that it found pictures that were the same but different sizes and pictures that were very similar but not identical, so it must have been doing something similar, I guess. This will need to be checked. I'll try it later.DL
  22. Oh, this could get good. Let a little national pride show through. Who's next? DL
  23. Thank you. No problems now. I am getting this still: <% GOOGLE BANNER %> at the top of the page. Again, thank you. DL
  24. Sorry to bother you. On entering this page: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=92789 , I got this error after attempting to make a post "Fatal error: Function name must be a string in /home/msfnorg/public_html/board/cache/skin_cache/cacheid_9/skin_topic.php on line 696". I am getting this on many pages I try to enter. I inadvertently triple posted in the above thread. I can read the thread when not logged in but when logged in I can now not reach the thread. I am going to post this and log out in order to check that it has posted. Logged out, I can read all posts. Logged in, I have trouble with most posts with the above error showing up. Does this have to do with the database going down as I read in another post? Thank you, DL Got this error upon trying to make this post:(probably due to logging out and then logging back in) Authorization mismatch - please go back and try again. If you have been trying to access a function incorrectly, please use the proper method. I saved this text, logged out, cleared cache and cookies, logged back in and still having similar problems.
