  1. Way to prevent dust = vacuum often Enough dust can conduct electricity. You get a s***load in your PSU, say bye bye to it. A can of compressed air is a godsend.
  2. Whoa... Now I know similarily what to expect with my GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB...
  3. Nice pics, guys. I might rearrange things in my case... Inside My Case Is there any disadvantage to placing a harddrive sideways inside a case? Cooling System? The case itself and a stock heatsink which I will upgrade to a Zalman sometime in the future. Don't know about watercooling...
  4. http://www.hamachi.cc/ With Hamachi you can organize two or more computers with an Internet connection into their own virtual network for direct secure communication. Hamachi is fast, secure and simple. It is also free. Read more on the homepage! Go to https://www.grc.com/passwords and generate yourself a nice 63-character password for it! Also listen to Steve & Leo's Security Now! Episode 18th podcast about Hamachi!
  5. I like my Antec P180 despite the odd design inside.
  6. Nevermind. A moderator on the VideoHelp - DV Subforum answered my question. With any other means, I lose the audio sync of the footage. ****. I'll have to see about getting the camera repaired... Thread can be closed now.
  7. Yeah, but if you don't defrag often enough, the drive heads have to go to and from more than they would if you had defragmented often. If you only use the PC to chat, download and listen to music, defrag once a month. If you download games, play games, edit video, compress/decompress archives, etc, defrag once a week. I defrag once a week.
  8. Does anyone know how I could go about capturing the audio from my DV without the use of a firewire cable? Any ideas?
  9. I rented both The Thirteenth Floor and Gattaca. They seemed like good movies. The next two movies I want are He Got Game and A Beautiful Mind.
  10. Well, I have to correct you on that, Zxian... I'm not an expert. I just spent a lot more time with video encoding than some other people. A year ago when the FireWire port on my DVC wasn't damaged, I was uploading stuff all the time and trying my best to get the best possible results with the video quality. Going "all out" as you put it, in my opinion, would be using AviSynth and scripting with filters and frameservers to get the very best possible quality in my videos. I haven't encoded much of anything over the course of a year. I still think XviD is better than DivX, and not because it is free! The fact that it is free does not have anything to do with it being a good codec. A good codec is defined by its ability to encode and give you sharp, vibrant, crisp image quality at reasonable fileszies. In my opinion, the best quality:filesize ratio is 10 MBs/Minute. When I did compare XviD and DivX to one another, XviD gave me sharoper quality at lower filesizes than DivX. However, DivX handled low-light scenes of the video better. XviD got "blocky" in low-light scenes. But, it's been a year, so I don't know how either codecs performs nowadays. The best way to find out is ultimately to try it yourself! Cheers, Jeremy
  11. Pwned.
  12. VirtualDub will do him fine.
  13. That's why I use the last version before it was taken over. v5.5. Hasn't failed me yet. Except for that time the Ms. clicked Yes on something while I was in the bathroom.
  14. I get stuff from www.ncix.com since I live in Canada and they are terrific. I got 2x1GB OCZ Platinum PC3200 Dual Channel for my new PC.
  15. Since so many average joe's ask this question and the answers to these questions are so bloody detailed, I'll simply give you this link.
  16. My WD is starting to go now. It takes forever to defrag and I made two coasters today. My burner is fine, it is a NEC. I suppose I have banged it against surfaces a few times and it doesn't help that it was originally in a Dell.
  17. My got my new hardware today! Unfortunately, my video card (GF7800GTX512) hasn't come yet as well as my BenQ 16x DL DVD Writer. I am not using it yet, as I am waiting for the last 2 parts, but I decided to try out my new Razer Copperhead USB mouse. Two words: beautiful and smooOooooth. The Antec P180 Midtower case is awesome, but different. I had to remove some plastic things from inside. I don't like the bottom harddrive holders because you have to screw them in and are likely to bang them against the metal several times in the process, also they have to be installed sidways. I don't like to do this to drives because I am paranoid about the outermost edge of the disk being affected by gravity. Maybe far-fetched, I just don't like sideways. For those reasons, that part of the case will always remain empty. I love the upper harddrive holders as they can be mounted AND have rubber things to reduce vibration. The rubbers are twice as thick and large as the ones in my last case, so I take it that will benefit the overall lifespan of my drives in the long run. The motherboard (DFI LP NF4 Ultra-D) is beautiful. I like the RAM slots placed horizontally above the CPU as they are out of the way from any cables that might be in the way of removing them in the future. The OCZ PowerStream 520W is gorgeous. I can see my face in the casing. The cables look cool also. The PSU has lights on it. The CPU, well, nothing fancy about it nor the heatsink. I'll be using AS5. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ that PuntoMX will help me OC to about 4400+.
  18. Same.
  19. I have Gmail, but I don't even use it.
  20. On NCIX.com (where I can my parts from) it costs $889. To pay double that for 20-30 extra FPS is not my idea of wise spending choices. Benchmarks from Anandtech In B&W2, less than 15 FPS more difference between a single card and SLI. "Yes, I want to pay $900 for 15 more FPS, please." "But with anything above 30 FPS that's smooth gameplay all the same." "I'm the buyer, you're the employee, do as I say!" I mean... argh... if you a boatload of cash then go nuts... if it pleases you more... makes you feel better... Sorry, I guess this is turning into a rant. To each their own *bites lip*.
  21. http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?opti...sk=view&id=2059 Thanks to PuntoMX for the link. I'm still glad I'm getting this card. I'll have a unique card in March, to suit my unique personality. B)

As long as OpenOffice uses Java, it will always be slow. M$ Office is fast, efficient and the standard program in many of today's businesses...
  23. To see my mother. I'm already getting an extremely powerful PC that will rape FEAR... My gf spent $500+ on me for XMas and I have NO IDEA what she got me, so I'm in for a huge surprise. Other than that, I wish for a few good movies, old ones, but nonetheless very good. That's all.
  24. Both of you just stated that you'd go for two different brands because you've never had problems with them. I'm going with Seagate because I find them to be the most reputable HD brand. All brands do their share of screw-ups, though... it's all based on your own experience. I personally won't go for a Maxtor, but if that was my only option, I wouldn't hesitate to plug one in. If it's bad, RMA it for a replacement and have fun. I like how new drives have the NCQ feature, too.
  25. Antec makes good fans in their cases! I have a midtower and the 120mm I can barely hear even with my ear an inch from it! And it blows something powerful! I don't understand why you would change from a powerful & quiet fan... The P180 has 3 of them for terrific airflow... That's the case I am getting.
