1. Corone, having trouble playing back .M2V files. I use MPC + Your Pack + FFDShow, but I still had to install a separate MPEG2 codec just to playback an encode of mine. I have the full DS pack installed, my m2v file needed the separate codec like I mentioned. Any ideas?
2. Just saying it how I perceived it. Nothing stifled about that. Anyway, glad this discussion is over. I'm tired of it, honestly.
3. I eat pretty healthy and when I feel full, I stop eating. When I feel hungry again, I try and find something to eat. Judging by the way this discussion is going, I assume you consider yourself fairly intellectual and are confident in the choices you make. Since you like Contig for the reasons you've stated, and I like another defragmenter, you think that your "apple" would satify my "hunger" just as much as PerfectDisk would. Well, I consider this another one of those "shove your opinion/belief/preference down the other person's throat" attempts. As for your concerns about time, I defrag my drives every 2 weeks at least, once a month at most. I usually do this overnight or when I'm spending time with my gf or watching TV/movie. So time doesn't really concern me. The more fragmented the harddrive is, the longer it is going to take. Consider PD has SmartPlacement and Free Space Consolidation, it has to spend even more time making things as organized as possible. This is something I've come to appreciate from PD. Having said all that, I'm happy with my preference and nothing you can say will change my mind. I'm used to it and love it and recommend it to others. That's all there is to it. Take a HD, install 20 programs, use them to create 3 files per program, then uninstall all the programs. Do this once per defragmenter tool and tell us all which one results in 0 fragments at the end.
4. Yes, of course you would. ubergeek, I would recommend the GeForce 6800GS. It really is powerful for the price. Other cards that appear better on the market still have difficulty rising to this card's occasion. The guys I work with at a tech shop, who know their s$%^, like this card. It's inexpensive, and if you're playing anything from HL2 to FEAR, you won't be disappointed, I promise you. In HL2 with 2xAA and everything else set to high, I get 150-200 FPS, depending on what is on the screen (sky, wall, ground, many enemies, etc).
5. Then your ISP must be having problems because it works fine.
6. Well, of course the defragmenter will be fragmented when it is initially installed on the harddrive because all files are at that point. I don't think any files are written to the disk as full chunks in Windows. Absolutely bogus, because the time it takes to defrag a few MBs about 1.0 - 1.5 seconds. PerfectDisk defrags more efficiently and effectively than any other defragmenter I've used. The tool included with Windows comes with Windows so it is free, but it doesn't defrag as E&E as PD, dunno about others. I'm with you on the GUI part, not as important as the functionality and other aspects. Diskeeper does a 3-pass or so and PerfectDisk did better after 1-pass. Under 2 MB. The filesize isn't so important to me in this case. PD installer is 3.3 MB and the Program Files are 11MB. That's fine for me. Being of as little filesize as possible is not a key factor for it to be a good defagmenter.
7. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/ZDM/story?id=1487408 Thought I would share this with everyone... again.
8. You having SP2 is not why you don't have any anti-virus. You can have SP10 and still get viruses. exploiters are always one step ahead of a security fix. Someone can easily download some junk off a p2p and get infected.
9.
Torrents work very well and for me the best program is µTorrent. There is no reason anymore to choose for a big program like Azureus or BitComet.
Azureus uses Java, which sucks. BitComet is awesome. I know uTorrent has a bit more customizability, but I'd choose the ability to download the files in the torrents s higher priority than being able to choose which columns are visible in the main GUI. I could never get uTorrent to download anything as well as BitComet does. I've grabbed countless movies, tv shows, albums, programs with BitComet over the past 6 months. So as for casting it out into the cold just because there's some other program that's a single EXE, it sleeps at the end of my digital bed.
10. Dig, by experience, everytime I've defragged a driver with PD, several PCs, several drives, regardless of how many file fragments are present, after the defrag, the number of fragged files is 0, with the files, system files, metadata and page file. So how you can get any better than a perfectly defragged drive... is absolutely beyond me. why bother with anything else if you already have the best. I think sometimes people pay no attention to the actual ability of a program and focus entirely on "this guy doesn't use what I use so let's keep the thread rolling with pointless posts". If you wanna use OO, go right ahead. Like I said, I know which boat takes me to shore.
11. Why don't you just use Media Player Classic = Corone's pack + FFDShow?
12. Uhm, it's just Windows Classic theme? That's what's so funny about it? I'm confused...
13. Well, it's a good thing to not have an "under 50MB" option, otherwise others would be tempted to make their Windows as crippled as yours, losing 99.9% of the functionality you sacrificed for gaming in your system, but of course they don't realize that less filesize = less functionality, so the whining and moaning comes later.
14. Ok, I just read that PDF file. Diskeeper 10 absolutely sucks compared to PD7. I'm glad I'm in the right boat.
15. Removed by self.
16. Makes you wonder who really does know what they're talking about these days...
17. It's one thing to disable all but 4 or 5 Services, and its another thing to use nlite and remove 250, 350, 450 MBs of components that don't really serve for what you use your PC for. I mean, you can remove Windows Tour, ancient codecs, background images, screensavers and CDplayer crap built into Xp for your middle aged man just upgrading from freakin' WinME.... OR you can read and learn a thing or two and actually get your install down a lot more by removing some protocols and components and just rely on 3rd party software that is better looking, newer, has better functionality, etc. It's Up To You.
18. Look, the 256/512 is far from everything in regards to how well your video card will perform. what matters is how much RAM you have, the Pixel Pipelines and Pixel Shader v3.0. I have the GeForce 6800GS 256MB and let me tell you, HL2, Far Cry, COD2, Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion, beauties. so, research the important factors before you think you have to get a 512MB to enjoy gaming... absolutely not true.
19. Yeah, well you wouldn't use ITunes unless you owned an IPod.
20. F/OSS = Free / Open Source Software IrfanView is Free as in you don't pay anything, nor are you encouraged to donate. Nothing complicated here...
21. IrfanView is free, so it should be on your list. I use it and it rules.
22. You missed it, apparently.
23. This was a sticky before. There was also a Sticky for the best registry cleaner at one point, but that didn't stop users from creating a dozen threads on that, did it? Search MSFN for "registry cleaner" and see how many show up.
24. Hmm, I use Fraps all the time, never had a problem. Do you have any file monitoring programs that may be preventing it from running? Sorry if that seems like a silly question to you, just trying to eliminate any potential issues. Best thing is to wait for a reply from the Fraps guys.
25. Replace the PSU.
