[Question] Deleting archived files after service pack upgrade...
Jeremy replied to nfanrekurb's topic in Windows XP
1. Turn off System Restore. 2. Resize your page file (set the initial value to the same as the maximum value). If you have 1GB or more RAM, it is safe to set your page file to 512MB. 3. C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\*.* 4. C:\WINDOWS\KB###### 5. C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution 5. C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles 6. C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch Then use CCleaner latest version. Open, Analyze, Run. I hope this helps. -
Do a repair install with your XP CD. After that, use Ad-Aware SE 1.06, Spybot 1.4, M$ Anti-Spyware, CWShredder, and HijackThis, anything suspicious that shows up in HijackThis, Google it for info and eliminate if necessary. Make sure to update all the programs before you use them. Also, if you're using Norton/Symantec, go download the Symantec Norton Removal Tool, and install either Kaspersky, NOD32 or AVG Free. I hope this helps you.

I use UltraISO to manage those image files. If nothing has success so far, are you sure it is a real image file?

The tech shop I'm contributing to sells a lot of Coolermaster cases as well as Antecs. I've seen some Kandalf cases (totally screwless design), which look nice. I'd have to say my favorite case so far is the Antec SLK3000B Mid-Tower.

I don't really think that's true, since I've copied files from one drive to another and checked the drive statistics with PerfectDisk, nothing ever copies as a full chunk, there are always file fragments. And it's not my HD incase you wanted to suggest that... I've tried on many different drives before, same thing.

Torrent = Full Abum or entire discography, selectable songs from the torrent itself... can't go wrong there.
-
Yeah, FileZilla is awesome.

Nice post, Ophiel. LOL

As uTorrent uses the BitTorrent protocol, regardless of what client you use, you might as well just select BitTorrent in the poll.

SP3? 1. Video drivers not installed. 2. You'll have to Google that, I know where the Hibernation file setting is and where the actual .sys file is located, but why it doesn't show up... maybe an ACPI option in the BIOS?

Internet explorer crashes when scrolling with mouse wheel
Jeremy replied to Sargad's topic in Windows XP
Funny how after all these years, IE still has issues with the simplest things... go figure. I'd say it's time for Opera and Firefox to take their places. -
The only drawback to it is that the front panel door is flimsy and it is very heavy. I'm not skin and bones, but not a massive guy either, and I almost passed out bringing my PC (case + monitor, etc) in a box up two flights of stairs and down a hallway. It doesn't slide on hard wood floor, either, due to the rubber legs. It comes with a lot of plastic inside that you might end up removing. You can check out the pics in the "Pics of your PC" sticky.

yeah, Skype rules. I realize the business aspects behind the scenes, but the features of it rule.

I personally prefer a case that is designed for good ventilation and air filters, something that will actually benefit the hardware to some extent, and not something that *looks cool*. I love the Antec cases. Antec is coming out with a new "Solution" series of cases soon, I believe. Cheers.

I believe he knows that already, mouvda and I already asked him about the boot.ini file, we shall await his answer.
-
Hi, Viper. Do you have anything after "/fastdetect" in your Boot.ini located on the root of your C:\ or whatever your boot drive/partition is?
-
That sounds very bogus to me. I've never seen anything like that before. The first thing that comes to mind is spyware / viruses corrupting system files. The second thing that comes to mind is a sloppy registry cleansing. A potential solution is to Google and download Dial-A-Fix which will re-register dozens of DLL files. I highly suggest you try that tool. From experience and reading articles and user opinions, I also suggest you forget about the Windows defragmenter as it is 5 years old and doesn't do a good enough job to be called an efficient piece of software. Google, download and try PerfectDisk. It allows you to do an "offline" (boot) defrag of the boot files, metadata, MFT and page file. Within Windows, it allows you to do a SmartPlacement defrag which organizes files based on how often they are accessed. You can also specify how many days a "rare" usage and a "frequent" usage is. I always set rare to 30 days and frequent to 7 days. Also it concentrates on Free Space Consolidation, and there is an option to do an "aggressive" F.S.C. while defragging. All of this far outperforms the standard and aged Windows defragmenter. Even though it is a trial version, I like that it does not limit it's functionality in the trial version. I hope you give it a try and find it useful for future use. Cheers, Jeremy

I don't think it's worth the hassle because we use Ad-Aware SE 1.06, SpyBot 1.4, M# AntiSpyware, CWShredder, and HijackThis, then Kaspersky for viruses. After that, the systems are totally cleaned out. Spybot just released new definitions yesterday as well.

What do you mean, boogy?
-
I just briefly skimmed through this topic and would like to know if you guys plan to make a Lite installer designed to allow only the basic CD/DVD (all formats) burning? Thanks, Jeremy
-
This is a shot in the dark, but there is a program called "Dial-A-Fix" which in the Tools section of it, there is an option to "repair permissions". So just Google that program, download it, and try that. If you can be more specific informatively, that would help moreso, thanks.

When you open Folder Options, the entry Single-click to open an item (point to select) is dimmed. This happens if Classic Shell is enforced. The option Show Common tasks in folders will also grayed out. This may be a Policy setting. If your system is in a Domain, the best option is to contact your network admin. For standalone PCs, try the setting given below. Resolution Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe and press Enter. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer -and- HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer Backup the registry by exporting the branch ( See here ) In the right-pane, set ClassicShell to 0. Restart for the changes to take effect. The "Single click" folder option should now be restored. If you are using Windows XP Professional Edition, you may use the Group Policy Editor. Type GPEDIT.MSC in Start, Run. Navigate to this location: User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows components | Windows Explorer Double-click Turn on classic shell and set it to Not Configured

What Anti-Virus do you Use/Recommend?
Jeremy replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Kaspersky is taking up 7 MBs during Idle all the time. -
Delete the programs folder, and any other files related to it (search for folders by its name on your HD, use Unlocker if necessary. Then open up RegSeeker or JV16 PowerTools (anything that lets you search the registry for something specific) and highlight all netLimiter stuff, delete. There you go.
