  1. CCleaner It's not that you're going to speed your performance up, but rather return it to what it should be.
  2. IE not being the default browser is a good thing.
  3. No, I believe my hard drive is fine. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
  4. Sure... if you're an ignorant "newcomer" or were burn yesterday...
  5. I've also received this error message and the hell it's put me through is really p***ing me the f*** off. I turned my PC on this morning and boom. NTLDR is missing. Everything was working *perfectly* last night. I booted to CD, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI were in the root of C:\, exactly where they were supposed to be. I did a restore with Acronis True Image, error (to my bloody amazement persisted!) I did a quick format, tried to carry on with Windows Setup, but the error persisted!) I swapped the SATA channels in my BIOS and that worked, but I don't want to install Windows on my storage drive. So now I'm doing a Full format to see if that makes any difference. Edit - it made all the difference. I no longer received the error message and once that was out of the way I was able to restore with Acronis to where I was 5 days ago. I'll be making a backup each day on both systems from now on. http://jeremy.zxian.org/?p=30
  6. Forget about Symantec and Norton, just forget about them. I promise you will feel better. Do as cluberti explains.
  7. The following may work if you're on XP Professional. Source
  8. That's a bit paranoid sounding. I don't run a software firewall or anti-virus now, but I am behind a router. I use Opera. I use torrents, not various p2p. I don't open unknown e-mails/attachments. I don't accept unknown users onto my contacts list. I clean out my system daily with CCleaner and jv16 PowerTools and I've used nLite. The main point is, you don't need system-heavy software to keep yourself secure, just a little computer-sense. Get a good hardware firewall. if you want a software firewall, get Outpost Pro v4.0. If you want anti-virus go with Kaspersky or NOD32. If you want freeware anti-virus, go with AntiVir or Avast, not AVG.
  9. Uninstalling McAfee doesn't remove all files, lots of files and registey entries are left behind. I would do a search of your entire system for folders named "McAfee" and do a search of your registry with jv16 PowerTools (or another utility that can search the reg and give you all results) for "McAfee", then remove everything you find. Then reboot the PC and try installing Kaspersky again. Are you installing the latest version of it, or an older version?
  10. Or this (what I use).
  11. Install CCleaner and clean out your system. Start > Run > msconfig and disable anything you don't use on a frequent basis (stuff you don't want loading in the background because you can just open it when you need it). Prefetch won't be as big a deal on faster systems. Install jv16 PowerTools, clean out your registry and defragment it, then reboot. Defragment with Diskeeper. Disable unnecessary Services (Start > Run > services.msc (performance increase is slight)
  12. Now That's observant. Nice! I bet you kicked a** at those "Find Waldo" pictures.
  13. I agree with Zxian. I prefer a background image, sometimes of me and my fiancee, or me and my best friend, or somoething from a recent gaming session. Long story short, it reminds me of good times.
  14. I've been PMing oscardog and I'd like to share with you my response: My apologies to BenoitRen and others. Cheers!
  15. Dude... humor. *Points to name of this subforum*
  16. Help me... hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.........
  17. I saw someone post a link to a flash video making fun of the typical user too lazy to search and just create a thread without a second thought. Anyone remember this? Was a *long* time ago. Was wondering if anyone had a link? Cheers, Jeremy
  18. If you actually bothered to Search you wouldn't have needed to create this thread. http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=60684 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=132
  19. He slurs and stutters his words far too much. He thinks too far into what he's trying to say, it never comes out anywhere near what he really means. He needs speech therapy or something. He's always passed off as a pretty much guy to me. I think he's just spent so much time dealing with security that he's forgot how to actually configure a system to run better than default. He's not a moron, but just needs to refresh some of his more basic knowledge I think.
  20. No, I didn't. Once again your interpretation is way off anything I originally said. I'm finished babbling in here anyway, since most people here seem uncivilized for the most part. Have fun with Win9x.
  21. Picasa is a wonderful freeware tool that grabs images from cameras and your PC, categories them. It can automatically attach them to e-mails in Outlook Express and make them into slideshows, edit, resize, rotate, etc.
  22. I'd never heard of this program until a cracked copy of it appeared on a site featuring cracked software. Diskeeper's automation is just too convenient to pass up.
  23. Driver Genius Professional 2005.
  24. I'd wait to hear it straight from an easy-going moderator before you get nerve-wrecked about it.
